  1. After taking the above 81/86 photo at Carlisle a DMU to Whitehaven and a few days walking across the Lakes took me back to AC traction territory at Oxenholme. 87011 The Black Prince arrives with an Edinburgh/Glasgow - Manchester/Liverpool train, 1st July 1979.
  2. Another one from the Kodak Instamatic files. 81021 shunts parcels stock and 86224 awaits departure with the 12:08 to Euston. Carlisle, 27th June 1979.
  3. Looking at it more closely, it appears to still have at least one roof periscope. Late retention of these seems to have been a peculiarity of the SR.
  4. I must have liked Horton because a bit more scanning has unearthed another one, this time from the same service on 8th April the following year. 47548 in charge on another misty day.
  5. Horton in happier times, 1st August 1980. 47543 with the morning Nottingham - Glasgow. Rescued as much as possible from a ropey Agfachrome colour slide.
  6. Another Kodak Instamatic special. Selby Swing Bridge with bonus Deltic action. 55005 departs for York, 28-7-78. An interesting page about the operation of this box can be found here: https://www.s-r-s.org.uk/videoPages/Selby.php
  7. Between Christmas and New Year 1986-7 I managed to escape for a few hours and photograph around York, knowing that change was coming with ECML electrification. Unfortunately it was a filthy day and unbeknown to me my camera was playing up, so the results left a lot to be desired. Here is one result, York Yard South, being passed by a southbound class 56 hauled MGR. Also lurking in the gloom is a new class 150/2 on the BREL York test facility, amongst trade for the wagon repair shops.
  8. Guiseley Junction, 1980 (more signals than signal box, here relegated to the medium distance, hope that's ok).
  9. Northallerton, 1982. The LNER built boxes between York and Darlington were quite attractive, in my opinion.
  10. That’s good to see, I don’t get round that way usually, as you can tell.
  11. Newark Castle, 1981 I think. The end looked to be nigh, but see below.
  12. Not so, they replaced an earlier type of Palvan with offset doors which had the problems. Vanwide type Palvan were the last type of ‘traditional’ van to stay in service after air brake and suspension modifications.
  13. I hope they change the bogies to Commonwealth on the InterCity one.
  14. It’s one of the 40145-150 batch with the extra headboard brackets.
  15. July 1957 according to the caption, the loco is black.
  16. D6700 seems to have been unique in being built without guttering to the tops and sides of the body side grilles. Notice how smooth edged they look in the above photo compared to the rest of the fleet. I can’t find an early photo of D6701 but D6702 appears to have been built with gutters.
  17. Some of the longer names were abbreviated, FIN PARK and GTSHE(A?) D being two that spring to mind. Notice also the two styles, one having the numerical/alpha code underneath the depot name. I can’t recall which style came first, unfortunately.
  18. Could the carriage experts comment on the Gresley with a British Standard gangway, please?
  19. Rail Blue/ Electric Blue compared, shows it nicely. Thanks for that.
  20. I saw a 104 working on the Hertford East branch in the early 80s, when the power was off for engineering work.
  21. The coal drops were remodelled by the Luftwaffe in 1942 so they may have been a bit different to the photo in the 1950s. Perhaps not appreciably so but something to watch out for.
  22. I spent a week during the summers of 1975-76 travelling the railways of West Wales. Some local services were booked for loco haulage, with classes 37, 47 and 52 featuring. Great entertainment climbing out of Swansea.
  23. Sadly, George Dent has included class 86 in his list of loco types painted Electric Blue in his livery article in the latest Model Rail.
  24. I think the 40 at Doncaster is D358. D350 had the additional nose end brackets unique to D345-350 which are missing from the loco in the picture.
