  1. Keeping my fingers crossed hoping that this is the start of a comeback.
  2. Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & The Waves
  3. Paul, Your post above is quite insightful - not just in answering the immediate question, but in showing how involved (and complicated) producing a sound project is. I dare say there are some who probably think all that is required is to hold a microphone to an engine for a couple of minutes and then just load that into a sound decoder. I also want to commend you on how often (and quickly) you respond to questions posted here about DCC and sound. Demystifying the technology and providing useful assistance is the sign of a true expert.
  4. I would be curious to see how much attention this gets from those not yet "in" the hobby. This is a great way to get one's "feet wet" so to speak without a large financial outlay.
  5. Phil brings up a very good point. Coming up with a modular standard does seem to be quite problematic. One of the things that seem to be growing here in the U.S. is T-Track, a N scale modular system. The basic module is approx. 12 x 12. The NMRA division I belong to displays a small layout at shows and I've seen other groups display ever larger layouts at shows over the past few years. New modelers enjoy this as it allows them to start small but also participate in a larger layout. Here are some links: http://www.t-trak.org/ While the standards result in a size that is much bigger than the cakebox (is there a 12x12 cake box?), it does provide some food for thought.
  6. Okay.....I've thought it before, I'm sure now. This guy is a genius!
  7. I just went through some of the first pages of this thread. Fascinating how the posts have evolved over the length of this thread (over 70 pages!).
  8. To put things in perspective. I do a podcast "Established Railway Modellers View of the Hobby" and interview 3 RMWebbers. Would there be any "universal truths" that we could pull? I dare say I don't think we could pull any from any one thread here be it "DCC or DC" "OO or EM" "RTR or kit." Trying to box any group especially something as broad as "young non railway modellers" is quite the challenge indeed.
  9. Too funny. Took me a bit to figure it out even though I majored in mech eng as an undergrad. lol
  10. Kathy Millatt's youtube channel is one to check out. Filled with great "how tos." Warning though, make sure you have time . . . it is sooooo easy to say "I'll just watch one more."
  11. In my mind.....anything that may end up attracting newcomers to this hobby is a good thing. Now, how about an American team for the next series?
  12. Not to be silly about this, but couldn't C&L perhaps sell some of its more popular items (rail, chairs etc) via ebay while the website is getting fixed? Yeah, it may cost a bit more, but isn't that better than the current situation?
  13. I'm still resisting, but its getting more and more difficult!

  17. Problem solved in two days. Simply fantastic!
  18. Actually on a USN ship (at least in my time) all personnel who are on watch are "watchstanders" of which the officer of the deck is but one. Others can include helmsman, lookout, engineering officer of the watch, etc. Dave
  19. Art, A bit of warning. A few years ago I ran across a Parkside van kit on eBay. I thought it might be "fun" to make a nice display piece (i've been a HO guy for a couple of decades). Not only was it a straight forward build for the most part, but turned out to be a very good looking model also. This one off kit has now grown to about a dozen wagons, a Dapol terrier and several pieces of track while my HO stuff gathers dust. Don't say you weren't warned. Dave
