  1. Re: Bachmann Eras, yes, I wish all manufactures did something like that , and sometimes I think the grouping era could do with being split into at least two, something like 1923-1936 and 1936-1947 , at least where the Southern Railway is concerned...
  2. Sound the 'Rule 1' alarm! I bought a couple of Brighton Dept. Grampus wagons from Simply Southern. Admittedly I didn't realise the Grampus wagon was a BR design before I bought them, but I do enjoy collecting Brighton related rolling stock. I'm thinking about getting hold of a Brighton Works Terrier and creating a small diorama with them? There is nearly always a BW Terrier for sale on ebay. Posed them with my E4 for photographs. As with all Dapol wagons I fully expected them to perform dreadfully, and as they were being pulled around the track by my C class in a goods train of about 12 or so wagons, one surprisingly stayed on the track, one did not... Edit: I feel like Simply Southern should have it's own bit in the Retailer Commissions section of this website? I'm sure the wagons will be of interest to others who may not even know they exist...
  3. The Birdcages are right at the top of my want list too, along side the H & H2 so I'm more prepared to fork out for them over other items, if Rails of Sheffield email me and say I've gotta pay £164 instead of £134 for my Merchant Navy I'll likely cancel that.
  4. At least they're only a set of 3.
  5. At a RRP now of £64.95 I am expecting something exceptionally exquisite.
  6. Partly disappointed there is nothing new for the 00 pre 1947 SR modeller, partly relieved there is nothing new to tempt me into spending even more money than I already am on the H2, Birdcages, E4 etc;)
  7. If Hornby want to release a Maunsell 350hp I'll be the first to buy one, a conversion is a bit beyond my skill set...
  8. Those of us modelling the first half of the 1940s don't want an 08 at all
  9. I'm contemplating the new wartime N, but there are other models I want more first. No doubt I'll end up with one when I run out of things to buy.
  10. Thanks I'll probably sell on that 6 compartment break and put the money towards the 4 compartment break I need, I bought them all before I knew about sets, per chance I've ended up with 3723 & 7411 from set 209 and 3786 & 1218 from set 244 but I'm going to use 1218 in set 209 so all I need is 3722, but there's no rush, my station can only really hold 3 carriage trains anyway...
  11. Ah yes the Dunkirk set is my favourite on the layout, they look so good with my E4 I just need to get hold of the malachite 4 compartment break 3722 to complete set 209 I have the 6 compartment break 3786 from Set 244 but I'm sure I read 3787 was never made to complete it, I can't imagine Hornby's logic for producing incomplete carriage sets, I'm sure it's been discussed at length, I only got back into the hobby last year after quite a few years break, and it was only then I found out the carriages existed at all, but they pop up all the time on ebay, I don't think I've paid more than £28 for any of them, most of them were about £20 I'm pretty good at waiting patiently for a bargain price for second hand items Edit: so excluding the Dunkirk set (which was still a bargain at £160 from Hattons that my lovely partner bought me) , I've managed to get 5 Maunsells for a little bit over £100 , that price sits much more comfortably with me
  12. I'm acclimatising to the higher pricing to an extent, I'm just about okay spending £150 on something like the Bachmann H2, but I still feel a little uncomfortable spending much than £30 for carriages, mainly because, for exampl If I want to buy the new 4 carriage Maunsell olive livery set, I'll need to part with £180 which to me seems a little steep for 4 carriages, but perhaps, as with paying out for locos, I'll feel more at ease with it in time as it becomes the norm... Its not *so* bad for my current layout as it can only really accommodate 3 carriage sets, but for people wanting to make express trains of 6-10 carriages, it must get very pricey.
  13. Seeing the colours side by side like that makes the carriage almost look turquoise... Should the Maunsell corridor carriages be the same colour as the original Merchant Navys, or is it prototypical for them to be a different shade? Edit:I see the question pretty much just got answered as I posted this
  14. On the subject of livery, is the light brown on the vent van accurate? Dapol & Bachmann use the darker brown on theirs, did the Southern Railway use both browns or...?
  15. Yes, and mine does, but I'd rather reserve my £100+ purchases for locos I'm more interested in rather than being for the sake of it even if they are region and era appropriate Edit: sorry, using my phone and forgetting about the replying with quote function
  16. I see, I shall most likely make do with my early model zone? Wartime black one , I'm not overly in to locos with smoke deflectors, duno why, just don't like them that much.
  17. if mine are from pre 1936, they will just have to be super weathered!
  18. Other than drive, are there many differences between the railroad and newer Schools? I've been looking at photos of newer ones against my tender drive one and can't see much difference... at least on the exterior.
  19. I don't favour any retailer especially, the best price gets my custom, purely for the selfish benefit of my own finances.
  20. The price moaners appear to have flocked to Hattons' Facebook page today...
  21. I wouldn't put it past Hornby to half way through year say "Surprise! Here's another Peckett!"
  22. They're certainly bringing out everyone's inner child and I love it! This thread makes me chuckle :')
  23. Hmm a black peckett could turn into Southern Wartime Sunshine livery quite easily... Totally fictional, but it could. *strokes chin in contemplation*
  24. Shall add the cattle wagons to my pre order, been looking forward to the release for the ones that suit my era
