  1. My only negative experience at exhibitions is air quality - my wife left because basically more than a few people should have showered. Hopefully Covid is imp[roving personal hygiene so I will be going to another one but actually what I need is training - on iTrains and the more advanced aspects of DCC and block detection
  2. @Tomscrut thanks that makes it super easy, but I didn't find that in the manual or any videos I have watched. I think all my decoders are DCC(126).
  3. OK let me rephrase the question - when I add a loco there's a bunch of decoders option in there DCC(16) etc. etc. so my question is how do I find out which one to use for each type of decoder I have. In crappy old RailMaster it would detect the manufacturer and type for you . I know iTrains can scan CV's to but this drop down confuses me..
  4. soo I watched a few of these and I think you might be missing something. I have a new loco and it's got a decoder in it how do I know which options in iTrain to make it work for some of the common decoders found in the UK: ESU LokSound DCC Concepts Xen Dare I mention Hornby Sapphire and TTS then I can set back watch the videos on setting loco speeds etc. knowing that when I nip up to the loft I have some chance of success thanks in advance
  5. Roundhouse planning, based on Horsham and Eastbourne examples.  10 degree angle and 330mm front to back.  I am  not sure on what construction technique to use I prefer embossed or laser cut brickwork but the challenge is always getting good looking corners. Any suggestions most welcome

  6. hmm that green looks more at home on a jeep ! My wife is very pleased with her SECR version of this , just like the one she saw at the NRM, however I do wish modern models were a bit more gloss, whatever the scale fanatics may say.
  7. My wife is eagerly waiting for the SECR D Class to arrive today from @RailsOfSheffield . She was very taken with the original at the NRM.- so what have your spouses and partners got running on your layouts?

@Platform 1 I'd hang on to her,  I think we'd all love a nicely dusted layout

Oh, she doesn't dust it.  It's just a convenient shelf! ;)

  8. I remember having to bodge workshops and hangars when Challenger replaced Chieftan so I get the comments about tanks in sheds
  9. Thank @Burgundy and of course it was knocked down way before what I am running (merchant Navy's Schools, S15s etc ) were built so this is not going to be an exercise in replicating an actual building. Also I am going to be building Hastings station as it was in 1934 and there was no roundhouse near there so I hope those who go for historical accuracy will forgive me. and even worse I am not weathering my rolling stock and I am using Peco finescale track which may be a crime against history too. Hopefully this will not mean my excommunication from this forum
  10. Thanks all for the great advice and information. My comments to all those that replied are: the ADM turntable is based on the peco unit so 300mm diameter (74' at true scale). If I take the st Blazey example (thanks @melmerby ) I'd estimate the roundhouse is about 30' from the edge of the turntable and the bay would be 80' long. That equates to 110' distance for the back of the roundhouse which isn't less from my planned 430mm (or 107' at true scale). I would like 6 roads to create a sort of critical mass and it sounds like 10 degrees is OK based on the st Blazey example, the key factor being how close the front edge of the round house is to the edge of the turntable the bigger the distance the less angle you need to get the locos far enough apart form each other for servicing and pillars at the front to support the roof and doors. My roundhouse will be based on this style at Eastbourne, but again it looks like this was only for smaller locos like terriers Thanks again
  11. Hi I have got an adm turntable installed on my layout and my plan is to build a 6 lane round house around one side of it. However I am not sure of the angles of the tracks e.g. 10, 12, 15 degrees between lanes. I have about 450mm from the edge of the turntable to what will be the back wall of the round house and that looks comfortably long enough for a 4-6-2 loco like a Merchant Navy. In the attached pic I have simulated this with locos on Peco locolifts at 15 and it looks right. Anyway I am sure there are experts out there who can help. I did find a rudimentary laser kit here on ebay which is the sort of design I want and even that asks you to specify angles and to conserve space I'd prefer to be going with 6 lanes at 10 degrees. Thanks in advance Deepfat
  12. Waiting for Hornby  - Unlike the really nice and friendly RMWeb forum I have to wait 5 minutes between posts again on the revamped Hornby forums - maybe the same guys that developed the forum site also wrote RailMaster as that often can't cope with the speed of commands I send to my layout and trains.

  13. So I need another dozen of these for my Peco 75 finescale layout and sadly Peco are no longer making them. However they do work and my evidence is that there are no second hand or new units to be had anywhere. The replacement item, the PT60 can be joined together for longer locos (PT-61 is a set of two), but these have not yet been released. So I though I'll standardise on the DCC concepts MPD system and they are also non existent in the UK. So I guess I'll have to come up with my own design maybe based on electric trunking.
  14. Making videos is very hard. I have been professionally trained (by Peter Purves among others), and it's much easier to criticise than make your own, so don't be too hard on the amateurs who are trying to share their passion for our hobby. Of course some of them need improvement and perhaps there is YouTube web where enthusiast discuss mpeg quality lighting and microphones to help them. Also we learnt to hunt, we learnt to read by sharing stories and it's our natural way of communicating so I don't blame anyone for doing this. Finding good content is hard on YouTube, but then if we didn't have the internet I for one would not have learnt about DCC, making scenery, improving peco points etc. etc so what I suggest we do is celebrate and share the good stuff - for me that's things like Everard junction and Chadwick railway and my be @AY Mod and friends could curate a list of good videos (like they make) and maybe run a vlogging award respectfully DeepFat - and here's me having a go at work on an entirely different topic to show you I can also do awful
  15. I would like to add unrebuilt in the context of a Merchant Navy locomotive and see that term replaced with original or air smoothed Andrew
  16. Can I ask a different question here what about stainless steel vs Nickel Silver. I know it's harder to cut but doesn't rust or tarnish and looks right so has anyone played with say the legacy models bullhead track made with that?
  17. @Nigelcliffe Thanks for the advice and I have done some digging and this should work. I am annoyed with Hornby for not continuing to enhance RailMaster, so I 'll be giving JMRI a try. IYou make an interesting point about the Elite not buffering command and my experience indicates it does exactly the same thing with RailMaster. So I will give jmri a tray and if it works then I'll look at getting an alternative controller. I have been trying to support BigBear with their new software but I think that's on hold. I do have a simple layout with no signals at all yet - Semaphore signals look really expensive! Also I just have the one Bus and won't run more than 4 trains at once it's not a club layout and sadly my club have no interest in updating their layout at all. My layout blog is on here if you are interested
  18. @JZjr a question for you I want to use jmri but not Oracle's JRE - is that possible? I ask because we have just announced our own Open Java SDK so I am going to spin that up and if I can get jmri working with my Hornby Elite. If you work in software can we talk?
  19. Does anyone out there make hand-built 00 point- work to order as I am not sure I have the skills to do my own to the high standard I would like? It needs to connect to peco finescale 75trackwork and work like electrro-frog Thanks
  20. soo I am getting e-mails about the fact that my world of railways plus subscription ends today but I can't renew nor can I see where to renew  rmgold membership. Can anyone help as I am enjoying the benefits, the advice and the friends I have made here. Also the videos are really good well made but authentic

  21. the Aberdeen Commonwealth will be arriving on my layout this afternoon, but I want to rename her to the Peninsular and Orient Steam Navigation. The easy bit is the etched brass nameplate (from Fox transfers). But what do my fellow enthusiasts  recommend for removing the number under the cab etc. before replacing with modelscenes waterslide transfers.thx

  22. @RFS and @JSpencer thank you both so much I'll start without sound for now as that looks a bit tricky to do the Youchoos thing
  23. Hi if you have one of these can you share the service sheet as I have acquired one second-hand without the box etc etc. and I need to fit DCC to it. Being an bit of a duffer I can't figure what to unscrew to take it apart. For extra credit has anyone fitted sound without intruding into the cab
  24. I was thinking about posting a joke on this thread but after I typed it in the RMweb site came back and said "press any key to continue". I am still looking for the any key on my laptop so you'll have to wait I'm afraid
  25. so in my continuing saga to get my apt-e (no 0018) running reliably on my layout. I have tried fiddling with back to backs but I can't get the power bogies below 14.6mm. I have also noticed she hates my brand new diamond crossing (SL-E194) however she's perfectly happy crossing the three double slips (SLE-190) on my layout so I am going to swap the diamond crossing for another double slip even if I don't hook up point motors to it because like Andy mcDowell in the L'Oreal adverts she's worth it!
