I went along to the Trevithick bicentenary exhibition in Merthyr: marvellous full size working replicas of Trevithick’s loco, steam bus, etc. Marvellous, but very poor turnout by the  townsfolk. And for a incredibly important remembrance of Merthyr, and the world’s, history. All the best with this, looks just the ticket. Dai Davies (ex Merthyr)

Well I was going to mention the number of truss rods, but you beat me to it. Insert an emoji with a halo here, because I can’t. This issue has cropped up in another blog ( can’t remember which), so I happened to be passing Didcot one day and came to the same conclusions as you: two truss rods on ‘modern’ coaches of 61’ or less. One of the O gauge suppliers has incorporated 4 truss rods in their B set, so you’re in good company!

I’ll be at Lincoln show when Wales play England. I’ll have get the others to man the stand (Amalgamated Wagon) on the Saturday afternoon. Don’t say hello to me if we lose! Dai Davies.

Good on you. I wish I could emulate your skills and bravery with your soldering. The only ‘quibble’ (and somebody please put me to rights if I am wrong) is that I don’t think the E145 had four sets of truss rods, just two. But maybe wrong!

The hobby is simply become too expensive. Suggest to built engines with less detail and leave it to the real hobbiests to improve the detail as they wish. Just provide a good basic model which can be added to as people wish.[/quote

Many of the Hornby Railroad range are good models in their own right: good proportions, good running. Years back, Crownline used to do detailing kits for the production locos of yesteryear, and somebody could bring out equivalent upgrade offers. Also, production costs could be reduced by omitting internal lighting and suchlike, leaving it again to the determined folk to fit their own. I would be happy enough with that approach.

There was a twin-seater reconnaissance? version at Boscombe Down. My father in law used to go out in it. I think they only made a few of these, and I think this one still exists.
