  1. Except that, in Cnut's case, he was trying to show his housecarles that he wasn't the supreme being. Now, Mr Johnson, on the other hand...........
  2. Is Scotrail a franchise or a some other entity? Have the DafT interfered in the running of Chiltern, beyond granting it a long franchise, which has allowed a more long-term outlook? On the third, are you saying that when the railways were nationalised, there was no innovation? Some of these questions I don't properly know the answers to, but would love to be educated on by those with some knowledge of events. I would say, as Nearholmer has above, that as long as the DafT is kept at arms length from day to day operation, and that if structures are put in place to allow reasonable investment and renewals, then the review will have been worthwhile.
  3. I was struck by how curvy the original L & B route was, and how busy the railway was south of Rugby, even then
  4. A couple of days ago, twice within about five minutes, I nearly had the front of the car taken off by other drivers turning right cutting the corner at 'T' junctions. In both cases, I was ten to twenty yards short of the give way markings, and not moving particularly fast. On both occasions the turning vehicles had to make evasive manoeuvres. Have people forgotten how to right - turn into a minor road?
  5. Would anyone working from home become liable to be charged a portion of business rates?
  6. Passed near it several times, on my way to Monkseaton weekend
  7. Ah, the Light Programme; Sunday 1 p.m., after Family Favourites, brought stuff like Beyond our Ken, Round the Horne, The Navy Lark and so on. There was also stuff like Gardeners' Question Time, Does the Team Think?, and Twenty Questions, hosted by my time by Eamonn Andrews later on. Mum religiously had me listening to the childrens' programme at quarter to two, with Daphne Oxenford. This was all very late 50s/early 60s; we didn't have a telly until 1962
  8. Bishops beat Kendal 5 - 0 at Kendal, so it won't be easy. Match is a week tonight If Hyde don;t win that, they want kicking all round the town. West Allotment are Northern League 2, step 6.
  9. Wow! 1964! That brought back a few memories!
  10. Well, the first foray by Stalybridge Celtic into live televised football didn't turn out too badly; FA Cup Preliminary Round at Stocksbridge Park Steels. The first hour, Celtic were under the cosh and at half time they were perhaps lucky to be drawing. Second goal after 57 minutes seemed to change the game, and the final score (1 - 3) maybe flattered Celtic. The first time I've ever seen a non - plying sub cautioned.
  11. Wherever the second one is, it isn't Man Vic, with all that knitting around. I've a feeling that's Edgeley Junction, Stockport
  12. Pocket calculators where you spell words on the display; such as "Shell" and "Boobies"
  13. I've got mine from 1972, but not the earlier one; and all my service records (the ones you received from the chief when you left the ship, which were used to prove your sea time for your tickets); as well as memorabilia from Spithed in 1977; like you, I look at a dark-haired stranger in the photos!
  14. Did Jacob Rees-Mogg have an interest?
  15. Glossop, pre-1954 would be ideal, I think!
  16. Why is it that, every time I scroll past this post, I mistake the third letter in the second word for a different one?
  17. It was the way the light was shining on it that confused me; I thought the spaces between the windows wre the actual windows
  18. That 5-planker looks more like an all-steel; first full coach in from the right; what is it?
  19. The BBC said it was "The construction phase" had started; so all that work of installing the bridge over the M42 a couple of weeks ago was a mirage?
