  1. Quite a bit of vegetation clearance going on between Scout Tunnel and Stalybridge
  2. In marine usage, the last telegraph order from the bridge, when coming to anchor or secured at the berth, is, or was, "Finished with engines", which probably went back as far at least to the days of triple expansion steam engines, where you had high, intermediate and low-pressure engines. Even if the ship had a single main propulsion unit, the description was the same.
  3. No, he indicated; I was so surprised I nearly crashed. I had to draw the attention of SWMBO to it.
  4. Bit of belated news here; travelling along the M62 towards Huddersfield last Thursday and saw an Audi driver indicate to change lanes.
  5. Am I also right in thinking that BR derived some benefits from the APT programme, however indirectly. For instance, don't the 2nd generation DMUs have air suspension? And that wheel/rail interface work must have led to something?
  6. Replying to this post and to David Hill64 above it; you are correct. Didn't BR hire several engineers from the aerospace industry into their research department, and they came up with some whizz-bang ideas of which the APT was the result; the HST was the traditional railway engineers' answer to that. I can remember a TV programme, maybe in the 1990s, where the commercial department had gone to the engineers and said "Could you design a train that will fulfil this schedule on the ECML?" the engineers said "No, but we can give you this" and the commercial department were amazed at how superior the engineers' design was - the class 91 & mk4 concept.
  7. I always thought that the EU issued its directives and national governments implemented them; as long as the spirit of the directive was adhered to then the Council of Ministers/ Parliament/whoever was happy.
  8. Saw him on Crescent Road in Duki a couple of weeks ago!
  9. Railtour around the Trafford Park rail system in the late 80s. Also linked in the 'Railways of Trafford Park' thread on this site. I think outside what was Taylor Bros. steelworks, on Ashburton Road West.
  10. But only part of it is in Lancashire; there's a fair chunk of it in Cheshire and Derbyshire as well
  11. It's hardly the fault of the EU if one of its governments plays strictly by the rules, or indeed gold plates them, is it? I'm talking all that country's governments over the length of our stay in that organisation
  12. Yes! Ten years ago I worked for six weeks at an engineering design consultancy based at Cheadle Hulme, using the train to get to and from work. This effect was very noticable for trains travelling to/from Stockport
  13. If I buy a lottery ticket, can you fill in the (winning) numbers for me please?
  14. A fair number of bridges to reinstate, particularly where the line of route crosses the Colne-Skipton road
  15. All evacuation instructions I've ever seen have said "Do Not Use The Lifts"
  16. Where will the car park be? Surely it's quite well hemmed in with buildings around there?
  17. Drove across the Park for the first time in a couple of years a few weeks back coming from The Lighthouse Church to the M60 J9. I noticed that the Parkway roundabout is being remodelled, and what appear to be tracks for the Metrolink Trafford Centre extension running right through the middle of it.
  18. The colour lights were certainly there in 1983; I can remember catching a train from there to Edale then. The Hayfield line stub was still there then, as well.
  19. I'm going to act thick here; what are the differences between the 700s and the 717s?
  20. Yes, but I've lost count of the number of times when I've stopped to reverse into a parking space, only to have the car following stop immediately behind me before I've had a chance to get into reverse. The driver behind quite often seems to be driving a Chelsea Tractor-type vehicle.
  21. I was there just after you (1970-72, and Feb-Dec 1973) and that's how I remember it. I think in the rush hour it sometimes needed the other platform in use; going way off-topic, I remember the station being used in an episode of 'When The Boat Comes In'
