  1. The problem of course is that Hornby can up the priority of their Black 5 if a competitor appears making it a very risky move - and while they may not match Hornby's new prices Accurascale like everyone else will be facing the financial realities of the current inflation and massive oil prices. While a consideration, there are new people entering the hobby all the time who don't have any existing Hornby Black Fives, or existing people in the hobby who change what they are modeling (and these applies to anything that gets a re-tool - as long as it is an improvement there will be buyers who have never owned a model of that prototype as well as a percentage of people who upgrade).
  2. I suspect someone will do this (or more accurately is already working on this) it is just more a question of when rather than if. See Rails of Sheffield, hints are that a positive announcement regarding their project will come at some point. Never get the licensing because a) the license holder won't see any need for 2 competing products and b) the idea of a high end detailed model which is inherently kid unsafe won't work for a product primarily aimed at kids.

  4. Realtrack have done several runs of their Class 144 model, it is new enough that I doubt there would be a market for a 2nd company to offer a high end model. Realtrack are also currently doing the 142, they have shown CAD drawings in their section of RMweb and are taking orders - again doubtful the market would support 2 high end models.
  5. May update. Discussion of when the Saturday works on the platforms will finish and the next round of piling to happen.
  6. Some searching revealed some photos and a bit of info but no specific data - not a surprise given how poorly documented so much of the older stuff is when you get into the smaller railroads. As for RS 15, the RS Railway modified it from after purchase - it was originally a 0-4-0T that eventually got turned into what you apparently like in its 0-4-2T At a guess the side items added were likely in bad shape and thus it was easier and cheaper to simply remove them - flat top surfaces are always problematic (particularly for outdoor display items) given water pooling and the freeze/thaw cycle that happens multiple times each winter. These are the links to photos that I found in case they help: http://www.trainweb.org/oldtimetrains/RS/roster_steam.htm http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locThumbs.aspx?id=170177

  15. Sadly no longer operating, evicted by the Crown Corporation that owned the place for a redevelopment plan (and then later cancelled the redevelopment...) Never heard of the TSR-2, though interesting to see that the Wikipedia entry mentions a commonality - a now long proven false - the belief at the time by some that fighter jets were obsolete in the missile era. Yes, the prototypes were ordered destroyed - but it was actually worse than that because everything about the Arrow including all drawing were ordered destroyed. Fortunately decades later it came public that one of the draftsman working on the Arrow took the drawings home (illegally). https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatoon/saved-avro-arrow-blueprints-ordered-destroyed-1.5416554 But the Arrow cancellation has long been the subject of conspiracy theories. While the project was over budget it was actually meeting all of its design goals and potentially exceeding some of them so the suspicion is that the US Government put pressure on the newly elected Canadian Government of the day as the Arrow was going to be better than anything the US military had. The total destruction of everything combined with the start of the "brain drain" of highly qualified people from Canada to the US (many ex-Arrow engineers ended up in senior positions in the US) has fed into this and the bullying of Bombardier by Boeing in recent history rekindled some of the theories.
  16. I suspect you will find that many of those items will also be seeing price increases as all the suppliers to this hobby (and any other hobby, etc) deal with the cost increases in materials, shipping, and anything oil based.
  17. Environment Canada (the weather part of the Government of Canada) will issue several tornado warning and/or watches a year in southern Ontario and they almost always amount to nothing - tornadoes aren't predictable unfortunately. So while they are worthwhile - a reminder to pay more attention to what is happening with the weather particularly if you are indoors - being unaware of one isn't as bad as it can sound. But they can of course be bad - in 1985(*) when Ontario had a bad tornado outbreak I was about 25km south of one of the tornado that went through (Grand Valley - Orangeville) and the sky looking in that direction was darker than anything I have ever seen. Helped clean up in Grand Valley afterward and the destruction - particularly the randomness of it - is unique. * - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Canadian_tornadoes_and_tornado_outbreaks#1985 Most likely what you experienced was a cold front(**) moving through and they are large enough that the line of the front will go over the entire southern half of the province if not more (and into the US border areas). You can actually watch a front travel through the province using the weather radar to watch the line of rain travel through. While for the most part they are relatively uneventful - some wind gusts and a bit of rain - they can generate serious wind gusts and torrential rain if conditions are right along small segments of the front. Though fortunately the actual front only takes about 30 minutes to pass. It wasn't a tornado nearby - there is nothing on the list of tornadoes in Canada for your time period https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_21st-century_Canadian_tornadoes_and_tornado_outbreaks#2007 ** - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_front Unlikely. As noted most warnings pass with nothing happening. More likely some local high winds caused an issue that caused trains to be stopped. Now for some slightly off topic stuff. Environment Canada issues Warnings, Watches, and Statements regarding potential or ongoing weather in Canada, and they have a website where one can see it all - https://weather.gc.ca/warnings/ As I type this (11am EDT) there are snowfall warnings in 2 parts of Manitoba and 1 part of Saskatchewan, Blizzard warning in 3 parts of northern Quebec, a fog advisory in 2 parts of northern Ontario and a Special Weather Statement for much of southern Ontario (we can expect significant rainfall later today to 20-30mm of rain with localized 30-40mm possible). If you are traveling in Canada and have data for your smartphone (or are willing to accept the limitation of using free wi-fi) both Environment Canada (***) and a private weather broadcaster **** (The Weather Network) offer apps that will give you any warnings/watches/statements for your local area. *** - https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/weather-general-tools-resources/weathercan.html **** - https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/the-weather-network/id473299958 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pelmorex.WeatherEyeAndroid Another useful app is Transit which provides public transit information for where you are - the routes and stop locations and times of the next trip. https://transitapp.com/ In addition to the expected buses it also covers the streetcars and GO Trains, and offers when available actual times and locations of the bus/streetcar/train as opposed to the scheduled time. bonus - it isn't just Toronto area but they cover many parts of the world where they can get open access to the relevant data.
  18. Or you simply add to the electrification. Though how this bits of missing electrification fits into your original argument that the 93 won't work out of Newton Abbot, which is nowhere near any electrification, I can't figure out. But if you really can't extend the electrification in time you can always modify the schedule to fit what is available - and if we reach the point that we are that desperate as per your case above people won't be driving their petrol cars either so a schedule change won't be the end of the world. Maybe, maybe not. The real issue is that the private sector doesn't see a need for such a loco, and thus the private sector isn't looking to have one built. That doesn't mean of course if circumstances change and a need is identified that such a loco won't suddenly appear in the pipeline... Nobody who cares about spending money wisely - whether it be a private organization or a responsible government organization - wastes money maintaining infrastructure to a level that is no longer required. If the capability is no longer required there is no point wasting money maintaining it - it can if needed again in the future have additional money spent to bring it back. At some point it has to be accepted that one needs to live in the present and spend accordingly, otherwise you find yourself being eliminated for good (whether through bankruptcy or a government killing you off). If it was really that useful/essential they would have found a way to achieve what they want, even if it means paying higher track access charges to cover the higher maintenance costs. The fact this hasn't happened is a pretty good indication that there isn't any current need for a brand new Co-Co passenger loco.
  19. Or, alternately we now have a much better base of knowledge of what different bogie designs do to the track and as a result the necessary maintenance required - as noted by others in this thread. If a Co-Co bogie at 100mph+ increases the maintenance costs of the track then why, with today's knowledge, would we allow new designs to use that design when effectively 100mph+ Co-Co locos have disappeared from the network except a small handful of grandfathered preserved designs? It isn't skimping on track maintenance, it's being aware of the costs and creating resulting rules to help prevent any increases to the cost of maintenance.
