  1. If Hornby weren't suggesting an £85 RRP, then I might be inclined to agree. I like the sound of that minories idea... might need to pinch that one!
  2. Hi James, I thought the IEG Hunslet looked pretty good. I like the Goods green on the pugbashes too, so will attempt that at some stage. The whole idea was inspired by how the Cambrian absorbed the VOR and W&LLR. And there will always be a prototype somewhere!
  3. If the modern DMU's are allowed their own page, then why not the best announcement this year ( ) - possibly second to the LBSCR H1 - and one which is suitable for era 2 onwards (to use that flawed era system).
  4. I don't like to guess where this is going... Looks lovely though. Reminds me to actually do a cakebox. Maybe a simple one first, then something else...
  5. Can't say I don't love them: I have four (OK, so one's been done as Beulah in her 2-4-0 form, and the other is on loan to a friend...) of them, and probably wouldn't replace them: just add more!
  6. I really like your reproductions of Mr Collett's MLV's... seems it wasn't just the NER that built them!
  7. Yes, a certain M E. D. Wardian who has the annoying tendency to loiter around the Parish of Castle Aching... Four-Coupled locos of all varieties have a lot of charm, more so even than 4-6-0's and THAT 4-6-2...
  8. Paper Overlays: These were inspired by Pete of Kirtley Model Buildings using paper overlays to 'paint' his LBSCR Stroudley-era stock. I contacted Pete, and he sent me a few of his artworks. I then experimented with a few bits and ended up producing a sheet for an Extended Tank E2 (Bashed from a 'Thomas' and an original Hornby E2) in LBSCR Lined Goods Black, for which I believe there are no transfers available. They worked quite effectively, especially once weathered in a little bit. I then did a GWR 6w Tri-Composite in the earlier iteration of Chocolate & Cream to fit onto a beautifully built CCW Wooden kit I picked up at the Severn Valley Railway. Since then, I've done numerous locos and coaches, with my best sheet (IMO) being the SECR R1 Sheet. I used MS Publisher and a ruler to create these, and it doesn't always work first time. I usually draw up the artwork, then export it to paint, before re-importing it as an image to make it easier to scale. I seem to remember contacting Guilplates about a year ago regarding LBSCR transfers in 4mm, but I seem to remember him saying he's stopped doing 4mm transfers.
  9. I feel I've posted a bit much tonight... Oh well, on last thread - Promise! I am intending to model a private steam workshop in 7mm scale, featuring Standard Gauge, 3ft Gauge 2ft 3'' Gauge, 18'' Gauge and 5'' Gauge all on one layout. Now, most of these are covered, but the 5'' was causing problems. By my reckoning, T works out at roughly 5'' gauge in 7mm scale, and for the purposes of the workshop I would want the track to be raised in the style of the many portable 5'' gauge railways one sees at community events and model railway shows, and preferably working. I do not intend to buy a trainset, and I may not even be buying any track. The current plan is to use one motorised chassis, fitted with a modified coach body from shapeways to act as a riding wagon for any (non-powered) loco that I would put in front of it. For such a small set up, would two motor units actually be required. As I say, this will only be a small part of a layout, but any opinions would be much appreciated! All the best, sem34090
  10. Hmm... It wasn't available down here last time round: hopefully this time I'll get the chance to stock up on brake vans!
  11. Hi All, I recently bought one of Hattons DJM exclusive Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST, No.7 in Littleton Colliery Blue, and was rather suprised to find that, straight out of the box the model was a rather poor runner. Lubrication did improve it slightly, but upon checking the wheels I found they were covered in paint on the surface that touches the railhead, presumably from when the model was weathered. A card inside the box states that the model had been tested, but it can't have run all that well with wheels covered in paint?! Now cleaned and running well, I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue? All the best, sem34090
  12. Hi All, I'm sure I'm not the first to wonder this, but I thought I'd create a thread on it. Having asked Dapol this question, at least a year ago, I was told that, whilst it had been considered it had been discounted because of one thing: The dated Hornby (ex-Dapol!) model. The reason being is that, although charging high prices now, Hornby could very easily drop the A1x to the railroad range at a consequently cheaper price, Dapol said that they were basically worried that people would go for the cheaper model. They thought it likely that Hornby would do this as they had already dropped the 1400 (We saw how well that went, but at the time the model hadn't released), Class 73 and Class 90 (All announced by other firms, one by DJM, another by Dapol and the other by Bachmann). It seems this year has continued that trend, with Dapol's new class 121 and forthcoming class 59 now threatened with competition from Hornby. I'm just curious what peoples opinions are on this, and whether they think this is Hornby intentionally pricing out a smaller manufacturer, or just a coincidence. All the best, sem34090 EDIT (24/03/2018): Since the announcement of Dapol making a new 00 'Terrier' range, I have renamed this thread to reflect this. For those wishing to look only at material relating to the newly announced model should skip straight to page 6.
  13. So long as we don't have another case of duplication...
  14. Been a while since anyone looked on here, it seems. I run both my railway modelling and train simulator hobbies as one of the same really, with both having effects on each other. My recent Colliery Layout idea, for example, has been stongly influenced by a Train Simulator DLC Called 'Return to Maerdy', featuring the rationalised branch from Porth up to Maerdy Colliery, and including a pair of grimy Austerities and the little EE Type 3D 4wBE. Equally, I frequently use TS for setting planned model railways into their real-world environments. This can be especially useful for not only scenery, but when real terrain data is imported it can dictate the orientation and postioning of sidings, running lines and singnalling. In one instance, on a Narrow Gauge layout I was planning, using the terrain data proved that in order to get trains up the 1 in 30 out of the station in one direction larger locos were needed or smaller ones needed banking. In the other direction the gradient levelled out. The Banking operation would've added interest to the layout, and would have a real-world reason for its occurrence. Anyone else around here who uses a sim? Also, I've started a topic on the UKtrainsim forum about the same topic of simulators and railway modelling.
  15. I too find that interesting... It may help to add some evidence to those who say that those of us who can't remember anything interesting choose to model earlier periods with all their colour and variety. Speaking of which, I am a huge admirer of your work, Mikkel!
  16. Ah, Mr Bulleid's Motor Luggage van, I believe! Where did the batteries go for the quayside working at Folkestone?
  17. I'm debating whether to 'join up' to get the pretty Adams Green one (to join my Adams Green Radial) or BR Early black to join my BR(S) fleet...
  18. My single experience (so far) of a WSF-type material is an LBSCR Class D1 0-4-2T that I drew up and accidentally printed to HO scale. It came out very nicely, with the curved parts nice and smooth with no noticeable stepping (The only ridges were the ones that were on the original model!), and it took paint like a dream! Cab detail came out well too. That was from imaterialise, where it's listed as 'Polyamide'.
  19. Hi All, My first new topic on the forum! I thought I'd start a topic to post my various CAD and 3D printing activities into, starting with a project I started earlier: the LBSCR Class L1 4-6-4 'Baltic' Tank. Not much to it yet, but I've put a picture up nonetheless: Don't worry if you're not fond of anything South of an LNWR Watford Tank! I've some more Northerly projects up my sleeve, including a few NER and LNWR things... All the best, sem34090
  20. I seem to remember seeing this over on UKTS not so long ago: is that UE4 you've rendered it in? Also, will this be included in a TS route, if so can you say what it would be? We need some LNWR routes for TS18.

    R1 project

I used a Triang 0-6-0 chassis under mine (which someone had already done the handrails on!), which (though far from perfect) works pretty well. I've posted a picture over on Alex's thread in the pre-grouping forum.
  22. Atlantics are incredibly handsome beasts, Rob, and I think I may need to pre order an Umber one... and a BR black one... (I know, dirty language and all that! )
  23. I picked up an Umber E4 as a bargain at a show... Now I'm doing multiple CAD's for pre-grouping stock! Don't give me ideas about heading North of an LNWR Watford Tank - I've enough trouble with the Southern Constituents! I will try and dig those out then. I thing they're N (Crest) B, with the lining as per the photo given. I only did the cab and tank sides, and they were stretched to fit the dodgy proportions. That said, they shouldn't be too hard to rescale to correct size, and I do have the drawings somewhere!
  24. I have considered this myself, albeit as a fictional Drummond LSWR 0-6-0T (And doing an NB version too!). If it helps, I have produced some NBR Paper livery overlays for this loco, I'll try and dig them out and send them to you tomorrow if you like.
