  1. Re: Diagonal Fencing That design of fencing is one of the NER standards. (NER Standard Drawing No.S69) I think the Midland used a similar design.
  2. Why should the lady be regarded as old? So she is wearing a rather funny hat and a voluminous but probably warm coat, but it wasn't all Mary Quant and mini-skirts in the 60s you know.
  3. I agree entirely with your sentiment, but I'm not sure that Beethoven attended a university. Sorry - getting too far off topic. Must get on with some Morton brake gear.
  4. I still have a small stock of Carrs products. The advice that comes with them suggests: Acid Dip for cleaning Metal Black for blackening Electrofix for stabilising. I don't know (and haven't looked) to see whether all these are still available.
  5. Sorry if we have had this conversation before, but if your quayside is in the South Country (or even better in the East or South East) would not a Sailing Barge be more appropriate than a Puffer?
  6. Re: Ring Around the Dome Is this a handrail, or does it have some other function? If a handrail, I wonder why other designs with largish domes never used one?
  7. Re: Yorkshire Pullman Should it refer to the 'Hull Portion' ? How many vehicles would have been involved?
  8. Re: Paddle-tugs This may not be relevant to the WW1 era, but you might like to be aware that Devonport had diesel-electric paddle-tugs into the second half of the 20th century. I understand they were designed to get close in to Aircraft Carriers. and exert a strong directional pull. One link found here. Carriers of that era were regarded as having a large sail area, Nowadays, presumably the horrible vehicle carriers etc just depend on powerful screw tugs, and on not losing engine power; or getting in a situation when they cannot manoeuvre.
  9. Please may I ask about the van directly behind the tender. Is it a GW vehicle?
  10. Just scrolled up, and realised that the signal post is on the LH side. Perhaps it depends on the angle past the smokebox, but perhaps he can see over the top of the chimney! I hope the fireman helps.
  11. Wasn't the GWR right hand-drive? This engine appears to be so, judging by the position of the driver and the reversing rod.
  12. An NER P1 please. Not a Q5 though - because I have a kit to build!
  13. All four Train Ferries survived WW1. Train Ferries No2 and 3 didn't survive WW2. (LNER Encyclopedia) Later this week I'll consult my library about 1917 and 18 sinkings.
  14. I wonder how many tank carrying ships were sunk by mine or torpedo?
  15. Well, I shall not be able to attend in person, but am very interested in what you describe. Hope all goes well, and please take (and post) some nice pictures.
  16. Please can I add to the congratulations on your ten-year thread. (Not to mention all the marvellous modelling.) It certainly helped me through the lockdowns, and again in a more recent crisis. I would add some pictures of my own current projects, but today is not likely to provide much sunlight!
  17. It is a nuisance when words change their meaning, or become associated with additional ones. Should it be 'pointless' or 'switchless' ? Are you going to base your dock on any particular prototype? A web search on the Richborough WW1 Port does produce a considerable amount of pictures and text. No sheeted tanks in a quick scan but they were apparently shipped from there. How many ports in the UK had the craneage or capacity to cope with tanks?
  18. While I may not always be 'politically correct', let alone 'woke', I do agree with you. Amongst my pet hates are confusion of participles; eg Forcasted Impacted As regards gender attribution to manufactured items, Steam Locomotives have been regarded as female since at least 1830. For reference see Fanny Kemble (a lady well well worth googling) and George Stephenson. They settled this issue between them. Ships and boats are of course female and always have been female. This is as true for a beautiful wooden sailing dinghy as for a 200,000 ton container ship. There are many, many issues regarding the treatment of women, in language, attitude, and imagery. I don't regard calling Engines and Ships female as high on the list of priorities. One has to be careful about the issues upon which expends emotional energy! Caroline
  19. What about the NER T1s? All 50 of them went to the ROD, and all 50 came home. Good North Eastern Engines, although no RTR version yet. (And I hope not soon, because I have a kit to build!)
  20. However, the A4s casing was very good at smoke lifting. As for shed work, just don't lose the handle!
  21. The 'ski-jump' is correctable, with a little work.
  22. Thank you for the above picture. The DMU is a bit outside my time period, but the ex-NER Officers Saloon is very interesting. Most of them were on six wheels, but there was at least one four wheeled version, which I think was based at Hull. I will look it up!
  23. I know I should work a bit faster, but I quite like buildings that I can see inside! (Or at least a properly positioned camera can see inside! The above pictures were all taken earlier in the year in the sunshine in my conservatory, which is good for my poor photographic abilities. The whole building is now located in place, with the approach ramp completed. If there is sunshine tomorrow, I will try to take some pictures inside the Railway Room. At last, I have managed to get back to working on the railway, even if it has only so far been on some Diagram 14 Covered Vans. However, if I can work on the railway then I know I must be feeling a bit better!
