  1. Doesn't really matter how many more 'novelties' are added to this model it's stiil badly let down by those awful cosmetic plate frame bogies. My own Bachy EE Type 4 is a beautiful runner on it's Penbits bogies but the outside frames........ are a No-No! If Kernow, a smaller supplier can manage a much better 4 axle bogie, why hasn't Bachmann made an effort with the various updates? The Derby built Bachmann 'Peak' models are no better either. Those long plateframes are a very prominent feature of some of the early type 4 locomotives and really do require an upgrade to something like. Regards. HL
  2. RE. Scale wheels. When I do buy an Acc. class it will be converted to correct gauge regardless of rotating axle end caps or not having the forged monobloc driving wheel pattern so I do hope that Accurascale provide alternative P4/EM wheelsets as previously done with other diesel models. The replacement P4 scale wheels provided by Ultrascale for the Deltic and the EE Type3 were not used due to being undersize but the excellent quality of those wheels I purchased are now under my Rapido Ferry Vans. Just the job and I do have alternative correct dia. wheels for P4 on order for my forthcoming EE.3.
  3. Good afternoon, I have used the P4 wheelsets from Accurascale I ordered as replacement wheels for the Deltic and the forthcoming EE Type 3 as I couldn't find a use for them. I found they are very true and give the correct ride height as an unsprung model but I will use modified Maso' sprung irons for the pair I'm converting. As an aside, the P4 wheels that Accurascale supplied as replacements may have been of the incorrect diameter but the product was excellent being very true!
  4. Certainly the class '40'. But, firstly, look at the Kernow Bullied SR/BR 1Co Co1 bogies and compare that with the hapless Bachman offering of the same design! Kernow got it right but Bachmann's cosmetic outer frames are still the same old crap! I have several Bachmann class EE Types 1, 3, and 4 and they run superbly to suit my wider 4mm. gauge but I must admit the type 4's just don't do the visuial business any longer due to the awfull cosmetic bogie side frame mouldings! Regards. HL 2
  5. Good morning Ian, I remember quite clearly that many of these vans, obviously brand new, were kept in storage behind the British Titan Products huge factory just adjacent to the tram shed of the former Grimsby-Immingham tramway and terminus at Pyewipe, Grimsby. This plant had an extensive railway system but many of the sidings, which held these vans, could only be viewed from the sea wall side of the plant which was only accessible by cyclists or pedestrians. Like many of the large industrial sites of the period long time storage of privately owned rail vehicles appeared to be quite lucrative for the owners with such of an amount of spare siding capacity that could be let out for storage hire. Which was exactly why they where there, apparently. However, I cannot remember how many vans they had in storage but all carried the green livery with the Izal logo and were obviously brand new, filling a couple of lengthy sidings! These vans must have been in store there for well over a year if not more, but getting rather old myself now it would be interesting if anybody else could remember them. However, again! I have Just remembered! There is some colour film footage on YouTube that actually shows some of these vans being loaded in the Sheffield area on a BR promo film about cutting the amount of marshalling yards prior to the building of Tinsley. OK time for bed now. Regards.
  6. I spent quite a few years working down Grimsby Fish Market as a filleter of white fish and every other kind of fish that needed a knife taking to it, ready for the various inland fish markets. Anyhow, that aside, I clearly remember chatting to the late Brian Rogers of Ultrascale when ordering some wheels for the later LNE/BR fish vans and he recalled the daily number of afternoon fish trains coming down the ECML on their way to Billingsgate Mkt., from Grimsby, Hull and the east coast Scottish ports. His most distinct memory of those far off days when the fish trains ran was the obvious, the delightful aroma of fresh fish, also etched in the memories of a lot of folk who lived along the line and were also able to sample that beautiful whiff! So, later in life when fishing declined, and so did the fish trains, I decided to build a number of the fish vans for a shortish but authentic train. So, after I had been fishing and caught some Cod and Whiting and filleted it I used the 'stocker' (offal) to give my short fish train an authentic and much missed flavour! This was acheived by soaking small pieces of dry timber in 'fish water' then allowing it to dry before putting the pieces of dry fishy timber into the wagons. Just the trick! However, I soon got fed up with such a palaver and never pursued the practice even though I still catch my own fish and occaisionally give the vans a wipe with a bit of wet skin but it aint the same as the smell of the real thing.
  7. Michael Clarks Masokits universal sprung internal 'W irons' are an excellent alternative in EM and P4 but not suitable, as they come, for OO. However, they can be split, just like the etched outside 'W irons', and pulled and soldered together for 'OO' use.
  8. The etchings I found of the axle/crankpin covers, a single item, are etched as Markits. HL.
  9. Well spotted Kernel. I always value the opinions of a genius. All beams rest on the bearings only and are visible in the first photo.
  10. As already mentioned they look like Romfords but by some strange coincedence I have just found a few very similar etchings of the axle cap ends in an old box. Rather strange since I haven't used a Romford wheel for 40 years!
  11. I use tripe beams with the beams sitting on the axle boxes in 4mm. F/S. They work a treat!
  12. Good evening, here are a couple of pictures showing replacement Ultrascale 3' 7" disc wheels that have replaced the original P4 wheels showing differing ride heights at each end. The lower ride height will be lowered slightly again to close the gap between bogie frame and body tumble home and that will be the final ride position. The Locomotion DP1 model, which is also very heavy, is an abslute superb runner on its Penbits bogies and I was very encouraged to find that the Accurascale bogie is basically very similar to the well proven Bachmann EE type 3 & 5 bogies and immediately Penbits came into mind!
  13. I'm surprised that the model manufacturer's haven't thought of producing a certain number of models from each batch in primer only plus the necessary bags of 'add-on' detailing parts. This would enable the modeller to freely choose whatever livery/period they want once they have their hands on one or some of the class they have chosen. As an example maybe 20-30 additional EE Type 3's (class 37's} for instance. A large class of a very popular locomotives that sported numerous liveries and mods. across the years on which many experienced modellers could put their unique mark on. This was just a thought that came into my head whilst pondering what to do with the best running diesel model I have, the NRM DP1, which has lost most of the painted embellishments along it's flanks and looks in a real sorry state now. Maybe I'll repaint it to look similar to DP2 but stick the number DP1 on it instead!
  14. Considering the market that Accurascale is aimed at I reckon they have done an exeptional job with the wheels in 'OO' and 'P4'. 'Hobsons choice' was my first thought as I recall when re-wheeling my Bachmann EE Type 3's and the NRM DP1 for 18.83 which was only possible on my end-to-end trainset because of the very generous curvature of the track plus the total lack of ballast, scenics, buildings and any other form of decoration. Plus, I only use it when the tide is out!
  15. Whilst waiting for my 1 Deltic from Rails I have just received 2 sets of 18.83mm gauge replacement wheels for my EE types 3 and 5 from Accurascale (very tasty wheelsets, very similar to SLW ones) So, I removed the wheels off one axle and replaced them with Ultrascale 3' 7" disc wheels just for comparison and here is the result. I will have a crack at using the Ultrascale wheels but if it doesn't work out I will be quite happy to use the Accurascale jobs as they are of excellent quality. Incidentally, the min. radious on my plank is a generous 4-5'.
