  1. Yes. Signs can only do so much if the blithering idiot driving the vehicle doesn't realise that, perhaps, they may be relevant to them. As usual the problem is drivers who do not know the height of their vehicle.
  2. Great to look at & admire, but cold dark and not particularly comfortable to hang around in, it turns out. Hopefully that may improve once the work is finished.
  3. It's happening! http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-bristol-43050388
  4. Having done AMS->LCY and back again, I can happily recommend it. The flight is so quick they may as well not bother with any drink service, and even allowing for the security queues at Schipol I can personally do door to door from my home just outside Amsterdam to the office in London (Regent St.) in under 4 hours. Not to mention landing & takeoff at LCY is an exciting experience!
  5. I have to admit, the "Check in" process & waiting area at both St. Pancras & Brussels Midi are generally depressing experiences.
  6. No, it was midday-ish towards Amsterdam. I'm guessing this would have been the return path.
  7. I am a little surprised that despite having 5 years to sort it out and during which Amsterdam Centraal has been undergoing renovation, nothing has been done to allow for passport checks at Amsterdam. That does seem a bit odd, and makes the service about as useful as taking a Thalys to Brussels and changing onto a Eurostar, which of course you could always do anyway!
  8. I bloody wondered if I'd imagined seeing that Eurostar running through Antwerp while I was waiting for my Thalys on Wednesday, too!
  9. My understanding is that the GCR does get booked for television & movie shoots a little more due to the double track: if you need to shoot somewhere that looks like a main line, you don't have a lot of choice after all.
  10. Unless you really like scenary, or are planning to build Che Tor, bear in mind that more is not always better when it comes to N. You can all too easily end up with a lot of space to fill.
  11. Thanks for the leads, everyone. I haven't heard great things about Powsides, and I'm not sure if I want to do a complete brass kit, but I'll consider my options.
  12. I've always used epoxy, but you need to be careful to keep it away from the NEM pockets.
  13. I've dipped my toe into O, and I have a small shunting plank in mind. It would, however, require a few Class B tank wagons. 14t tanks seem easy enough: Slaters do a kit (or Dapol even do them RtR). If I want to really go crazy there's the JTLRT TTA kit. But can anyone tell me where I can find a kit for the 20t "anchor mounted" type? I know that Heljan do them RtR but I quite enjoy building from kits!
  14. Yes, I'd still trust a post on Facebook over anything printed in The Express or Daily Mail...garbage, the lot of them.
  15. The railway isn't there to be a work of art. It's a functional thing. The catenary is designed to fulfill a function, which it will do better than the cheap knitting on the ECML which regularly comes down. Besides which many landowners considered the railway a hideous scar on the landscape. Very few welcomed the construction of the GWML as a great work of art, visually.
  16. It looks like it got well stripped for parts at least, but how did it end up in BFYE?
  17. Does anyone know what actually happened to 47540? Disused-stations says it was moved to the Wensleydale Railway, but Rail UK says it went to CF Booths. I assume Rail UK is correct?
  18. I've tried both Farish & Parkside, and found that the Farish wheels tend to be a bit tight in Peco chassis, but Parkside were always a drop-in replacement. The only thing with Parkside wheels is to check & adjust the back-to-back before fitting, as they tend to be all over the place. Here's hoping that Peco drop their plastic wheels in favour of the Parkside metal ones...
  19. 50mm, you say? If my math is correct....well, that would certainly be nice!
  20. I wouldn't worry too much about USB. Finding some way to make existing DCC systems work (making the decoders fit, basically) seems like it would be a better idea for a "serious" model. I'd like to say I'm also amazed at quickly you seem to be moving. It all seems very exciting, I can't wait to see what you've got up your sleeve!
  21. I certainly remember my dad parking there more than once. I also seem to remember that the shed itself was condemned at some point and you couldn't park underneath it, only outside.
  22. To be fair (I can't believe I just wrote that...) it doesn't have to be top-contact 3rd rail. Bottom or side contact could get approval.
  23. That would certainly involve some inventive tunnelling...
  24. There's a rake of 'em there in the picture in Downendian's post, so we're fine! Ore-tipplers & spoil wagons work too, and I have no doubt I could fit in an engineers train or two as well
