  2. I remember being in a similar dilemma when it came to building Outhwaite. I probably would have gone with medium points and maybe a slip had they been available. On reflection, I'm glad I opted for the large radius points.

  6. I'm currently working on this North Eastern Railway goods warehouse. It is intended to be the one at Sawdon on the Forge Valley Railway, but there were ones to the same design on other N.E.R. lines such as the Whitby to Loftus and the Scarborough to Whitby, with minor variations. Slaters embossed plasticard is used for the brickwork and roof. Plasticard sheet for strengthening the structure inside. Plastruct lengths of various dimensions are used for the fine details. The most recent focus has been on the curved boarding (above) and getting a consistent cut of the pointed end. This wasn't as neat as I'd like using a knife, so I invested in a miter shear cutter (below) which has done a much better job.

  8. Very interesting to see your work on this Paul. I've drawn up the plans to 4mm scale for the same building, originally from Robin Lidster's Forge Valley line book, ready for building, so will have something to compare to!

  11. Ex Midland 3F No.43762 brings a pickup goods into Outhwaite Station. Outhwaite is featured in the current issue (April 2023) of Railway Modeller.

  13. Any idea what sort of consist a train would have been made up with gunpowder van(s) for quarries? I'm asking on an N.E.R. angle, but would imagine it would be similar for most companies? Would you expect to see them in a pickup goods with a barrier wagon or a dedicated train of their own?
  14. On the N.E.R. example, the warning plate is on the left door on the model, but the photo in the NERA archives it is on the right door. I was going to ask if that was intentional, but going on the last few posts can see the reason. I'd much rather have the van available as advertised than not at all.

  17. Is it known if the three rail bunker versions (ie not the hopper or cage ones) can remove the rails? ie to cut it down or replace it with a two rail version?
  18. Thanks for looking that up @Jon4470. I've just checked some pictures of No.1235 and it really does look quite ungainly with the even larger smokebox than No.2013. Similar in appearance to the superheated Class W (A6). So I think the summary is, out of the 12 Raven framed D20's, they could all in theory be modelled in NER by the DJH kit, bar one: No.2013 due to the extended smokebox and that answers the title of the thread! Returning back to photographic evidence, of the 11 candidates, No.2101 is the only one I've found so far with the correct smokebox and frames in N.E.R. livery. As this confirms which chimney, safety valves, whistle position, smokebox handle etc, it seems like the best one to work with. I would certainly welcome any further photographic evidence of other class members to widen the possibilities.

The list of numbers from the class with Raven frames matches mine exactly, though my collation was somewhat more laborious, looking at photos of each class member! The problem with No.2013 is; looking at a photo in the NERA archive (NERA 1448-400), the smokebox looks considerably longer than the standard superheated smokebox. I'm not sure if 2013 was a one off as it was the first or more of them had it before the smokebox size found in all LNER/BR photos was adopted. Does Yeadon's mentioning anything about 2013 possibly being a guinea pig for superheating? Good point on the tender details, I can see the difference in the frame cutouts. Not ideal, but I think that is a detail I'd have to overlook.

  21. Thanks. When I purchased the model, it was not yet a runner, but not far off. I've worked on it since and it is now operational. There is a little bit of snagging to do still to make it better, but it is generally good. It would be improved further by adding pickups to the tender wheels as it currently only has driving wheel pickups and the model is front heavy.
  22. I have acquired a nearly complete DJH D20 in 00 gauge, a photo is attached. The model has been built to represent a class member in the later LNER or BR period with suitable whistle, safety valves, snifter valve and chimney. I am trying to identify if the model can represent a member of the class in North Eastern Railway livery. The already mentioned parts can all be replaced, so are not much of a problem. I believe there are two key components the DJH kit has which limit what it can represent, namely: The length of the smokebox The Raven type frames which come above the running plate below the smokebox with a convex profile, rather than the original smaller concave profile Of the 60 built, I've identified at least 12 (but probably not many more) had Raven frames for at least some of their lives. The smokebox does seem to really limit options though. As I understand it, the original design smokebox was shorter and they were eventually all replaced with the larger smokebox (for superheating?). Plenty of photos exist of this configuration (1 & 2 listed above) in LNER/BR days and almost every class member is documented photographically, but so far I've only found one photo of the class in North Eastern Railway livery which 'might' (I say might because I'm not 100% sure!) be correct. That class member is No.2101 (for any NERA members, the photo reference in the digital archive is NERA 1448-336). Every other photo I've found of the class in N.E.R. livery with Raven frames has the short smokebox (or it is not clear enough to identify which smokebox). No.2013 appears to be an anomaly with an even longer smokebox (NERA 1448-400). Can the DJH model represent No.2101 in N.E.R. livery? If so, is it the only one? I suspect the solution to help answer this query may be Yeadon's, but I thought I'd ask here first!

  25. Here is another wagon I've been working on this last week. Probably my favourite N.E.R. wagon of all, the Diagram P4 hopper, which is a 3d print from the "Small Loco Works". They can be found only on Facebook I believe, but would highly recommend, as the print quality is excellent and the price is very good. I think it works out at roughly £13 each if you buy five or more. I've finished this one bar weathering. It has been painted and transfers applied, and three link couplings fitted. There is a pre cut slot just the right size for metal three link couplings. There are also NEM sockets, which I've opted to keep rather than cut off. I also opened up the axle boxes to fit bearings. My first attempt at this was to accept Bachmann wheel sets, which have a thicker axle end profile and required more opening up. So much that I blew through the axleboxes. All is not lost as it will fill and paint over. The wagon pictured is a second example, where I've used a wheelset with a far thinner axle end profile, resulting in about 1.5mm difference despite being the same overall length! I found these wheelsets in a David Geen kit and need to source some more for the other three of these wagons I have. I think they could be Gibson or 51L, but if anyone is good at identifying wagon wheelsets from sight I'd be really grateful! I can post close up photos of the wheelsets if that helps. This one is modelled as 23069, a photo of which exists in the NERA archive. It does differ slightly to that example, with some vertical strapping missing and also the hand rails are not present.
