  1. BIG SCALE MODELLING!

My thoughts have turned to the full size Highland coach again.

I have made some templates for features of the buffer beam.

    These are,

    1. The end profile of the buffer beam

2 & 3 The casting in which the drawhook sits

    4 The drawhook

5The spacer the buffer is bolted to.

    6 is the works plate

To give you an idea of size, the buffer spacer is just under 10inches in diameter

  2. All looking good Ade. You are motoring now. Hope you enjoyed catching CR419 earlier in the summer.

I have a fondness for that loco because at the tender age of 13, in 1975, it was the first engine I ever worked on on my first visit to the SRPS. It was dark blue then, it is a much lighter shade now.

    Cheers

  3. I was especially taken with the plan of Wick. It occurred to me that you could do exactly the same with the other end of the line at Inverness, depicting platforms 4,5 and 6. The platform 4 line would be at the back glimpsed through the arches which form internal support of the overall roof. Platform 4 is a southbound platform, 5 and 6 are Far North platforms.

Will be interested in seeing progress

I started a 126 Unit a few years ago inspired by Signaller69s  Trix cut and shuts .  That didn't go well mainly because the Trix coaches i sourced had been glued to underframes . So I've sourced some more this time unglued and are intent on starting again using a Lima117 underframe . Meanwhile I got a full Silver Fox kit  and some additional cab ends , so in theory I could have 2  126s . Just lacking the ability to do it , so anything you post would be inspiring .

Yes it is quite daunting. I will give it a go though!

  5. Hi Andy,

Not sure what is going on behind the gate. I did not pay too much attention on the day.

I hope you manage to make the trip. Here is a picture to whet your appetite, taken the same day.

I would love to see a tour to Mallaig headed by a Class 27! My first visit was whilst working on SRPS railtours trains in the mid to late seventies. I must have visited almost every other weekend for quite a few summers.

The SRPS seventies railtour train would be an interesting roster for your model, giving you an excuse to have a Gresley buffet, a couple of LMS coaches and the two surviving CR coaches too. We usually had 3 or 4 BR Mk1s in blue/grey to complete the train

    Cheers

Deltics were occasionally used between Edinburgh and Glasgow prior to the introduction of the Summer 1962 timetable and, later on, once they began to be displaced by HSTs.  The latter period is outside my timescale but they were likely reported in Deltic Deadlines of the era.  Some references to the earlier period are as follows:-

    Railway Observer February 1962:

    • During and after the New Year holiday period (1961/62), Deltics appeared in Queen Street, especially on the 9.30 am to Kings Cross on which D9016 was unusually banked by an EE Type 1 on 11th January.  On 28th December, D9013 worked through on the "North Briton".

    Modern Railways March 1962:

    • The Deltics have recently begun working through to Glasgow Queen Street, one duty on which they have been seen covers the 5.15 pm from Edinburgh Waverley and the 8 pm back, which includes the Fort William-Kings Cross sleeping cars.

    Lost Magazine!

    • A participant on a tour involving ex Caledonian steam power from Glasgow Central in late 1961 / early 1962 had a letter and photograph published in one of the magazines (Traction?).  The photograph depicted a Deltic at Queen Street (D9021 springs to mind but I may be wrong), the motive power for his return journey to Edinburgh after the tour and possibly the 8 pm departure referred to in Modern Railways.  This is the kind of thing I normally retain but unfortunately I find myself unable to locate the issue concerned!

I believe I read somewhere that these were driver training runs in preparation for the introduction of the Summer 1962 timetable.  These workings and the famous photograph of D9010 on the "Queen of Scots" all seem to depict Haymarket locos.  A copy of the Summer 1962 Deltic diagrams appears as an appendix in the book "Deltics at Work" by Allan Baker and Gavin Morrison.  Suffice to say that none of the diagrams show Deltics getting beyond Edinburgh.

Hope this is of some use.

    Thanks for this, much appreciated.

Hi David. Not fully sure about the time frame you are modelling but from my research, there was a Deltic hauled daily named KX service from GQS in the 70’s. I suspect this also ran in the 60’s. (Photo of a Deltic on pullmans) During the mid eighties, there was 2 services a day, 1 departing at 0800 and a 2nd at 0830. These were HST sets which used to block the station throat so they literally came in, driver changed ends and straight out again.
    Cheers.
    Bill.

Thanks for that Bill. I am modelling fifties and sixties before the track layout changed. That said I intend to have an alternative seventies roster even though the track layout is wrong! That way I can model the trains I actually remember. Class 27 push pulls appeal greatly because I saw them on an almost daily basis in my teens. So your information is of great interest.

    Cheers

I didn't think Deltic's were common at Queen St, or was it just one working?

You are right Jools. There is a picture of one on the Queen of Scots pullman at GQS dated 26 May 1962. It may have been the only visit by a Deltic other than more recently in preservation.
