  1. Mark , I recommend Bankers and Pilots by Potts to give you a picture of the traffic levels over Woodhead and the reason the investment happened in the first place. Back to the original posters point. If that investment hadn't been pumped in the the 1940/50 it would have happened in the 1960s and with AC electrification, centralised power signalling, we might have been sat here on a very different topic. There's a quote from a Manchester railwayman, somewhere out there in the internet, bemoaning the fact the the hope valley route essentially a secondary route, killed off 2 mainlines and it's an interesting point to ponder.
  2. By which time 40127 was carrying the "crosseyed" domino effect , I'm imaging Reddish would have just repaired one end and the other end would have been original?
  3. ..for cutting card kits obviously, I don't seem to get the edge I need with a steel rule. There is a thread on here about a square cutter but the picture has disappeared so it's difficult to get an idea of the product. The interwebs has a fellow rotary trimmer at 9 pounds and a hobbycraft 2.5 x 6 inch trimmer at 4 pounds . Any thoughts on these products?
  4. Can we have a Shenfield/Glossop EMU with those EM1&2s please ;-)
  5. Great work, been watching with interest, just needs two Class 76s on the front of the rake, happy days
  6. Was there ever a drawing of the Robinson Garrett would be very interesting to see the differences between what Robinson proposed with his design and what Gresley delivered. I believe the fireman would have had a slightly easier job providing steam to 4 cylinders rather than the 6 on 69999. I read that to Robinson asked for 2 Garretts but Gresley cut the order to one. I believe banking was preferred on the Wath branch as there were concerns about drawgear snapping and I don't think the branch had catchpoints.
  7. Is this the track effect tests after it was worked out how much hammer the AL6s were inflicting on the PW. A Deltic, AL5 and AL6 were run up to 125mph at Cheddington in 1970 according to OS Nock.
  8. Maybe it was a two rows of two in the central window of the ALs. I knew I had read that the 4 panel route indicator was a late change after the cab design and front end shaped had been signed off. Quoting from British Rail Fleet Survey 6 Electric Locomotives (Brian Haresnape) "This scheme replaced the two panel version (a la SR) which would have occupied the central front window area - hence the use of three windows instead of two" Perhaps Brian meant 2 x 2 instead of 2 panel , apologies if I've mislead anyone. He also has a line drawing of a co-co locomotive based on the AL6 for a 1960s proposal for the Channel Tunnel.
  9. The AL4 are most distinctive having oval buffers and more of a slope to the front. The 3 panel window arrangements for AL1-6 are a result of a proposal to standardize on the SR 2 digit headcode system.
  10. Sorry for further thread drift. The comment about the EM1 cab appearing to be stuck on the SAR 1E bodyshell is a good call, the change in lines is very noticeable after someone draws attention to it. Does anyone else see similarities between the cab of the prototype EM1 and the rather sinister German D311/V188 diesel locos. The rake of the cab windows, corners of the cab and cab door arrangements, I'm sure it's a coincidence as they were designed and built around the same time by two countries at war with each other.
  11. Suitably upgraded with train heating boilers, timken axleboxs and improved bearing services.
  12. Going slightly off the green topic, are 26019 and 26050 in electric blue, rail blue, "Manchester blue"? There's an mention in one of the Woodhead books that Reddish did some rectification on 303/AM3s in the 1960 and had supplies of Caledonian blue, and maybe they had pullman blue too.
  13. Does anyone see a another lner electric stock resemblance in another piece of SAR railway equipment??
  14. Gresley had visited South Africa railways, the Class 1E with metropolitan vickers equipment looks like the starting point for the EM1 design. Look at the side grills and Bo+Bo bogies.
  15. Thanks for getting back to me Rex. I would like the kit back as is and would like to pick it up ASAP, either this weekend or early next, can you PM me with your availability please. Also like to make sure you have some funding for your efforts. Thanks dave
  16. Some very good advice, I shall look to blend a solution from the info provided. Thanks to all who have taken the time to reply.
  17. Looking very nice that. @RexAshton - not heard anything back from the messages I sent you yet?
  18. I was helping to clear out a friends relatives flat and knowing my interest in railway he said Ive put these on one side for you, so I ended up with over 120 US freight wagons, a few clapped out locos and a small city worth of buildings, some assembled, some still boxed. The freight stock has a Burlington Northern feel to it, many are US household names, eg dupont , penn salt, mainly a mixture of minitrix, atlas and Bachmann. Some are weathered some mint. I was intending to use them for a small layout but a proposed house move has brought them into the spotlight and Im looking to move them on as N gauge doesnt really suit my sausage-fingered modelling skills. The local model shop has offered me around quid a wagon but wont touch the buildings , ebay seems a faff and theres very little US stuff to gauge the interest levels, the toy auction at the local auction house seems risker than the model shop but will take the lot? Any thoughts of the forum on which of the above offers me the best potential outcome or other options available to me?
  19. It's covered in one of the more recent woodhead books, apparently there was an early (1950s) trial that didn't work well, and the clear call system was fitted to the air braked/multiple working locos when they were converted in 1969 & 1976
  20. Be nice to see it get a new home. Em2 loco society dont have any suitable storage for it, so cant offer it a home. https://www.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/SMG-Transfers-Advert-October-to-December-2021.pdf
  21. British Red Cross have a range of wheeled adjustable tables that might help, smaller versions of the ones in hospitals.
  22. Morning Was hauled by 26020 and comprised RF03, RF011, F03003, BFK1541, and Beavertail 1719. The latter is self explanatory but the others are beyond my knowledge, RF03 looks Gresley and the rest look like MK1 stock. What are my options for modelling this formation in 00? Edit: found a mk1 thread on here 26020 Restaurant First 03 (gresley?) Restaurant First 011 First Open 3003 Brake First Corridor 1541 Beavertail 1719
