  1. Would this be because he is 77? I hope not as I will be 77 on the 24th of this month!
  2. What about nurses? My wife and I went to a fancy dress party as each other. At that time I was a telephone engineer and she was a nurse. I had a beard and she didn't, that was soon fixed with a proper glued on "stage" example.
  3. When I was on a three week course "Hanging out washing the correct way" I was told "Tops pegged by the bottom and bottoms by the top". I have the scars to show I did get it right in day 4.
  4. A great pity this show is not taking place. I have had three layouts there over the last few years. I was given an invite for next year but as I am now "retired" I passed it on to one of our group members. Here's hoping it goes ahead soon. J'espère que tout ira bien mes amis. J'ai eu de la chance.
  5. Having coursed interest in trolleybuses in general, I now see further interest in points and the operation of them. Looking at the Hull system they used the handle on the pole for the conductor to use for such as "turnback loops", terminus shared by two other routes or access to the garage. All can be seen on the "You Tube" listed here . Finally there were three routes sharing the same road and the points where they parted company were powered. If the driver wanted to operate a point he would slow right down and then using the handbrake he would increase the power used and this would change that point. Hull only had the model seen above (the Coronation) which were fitted with "restrainers".
  6. As there have been several photos of trolleybuses and now a comment on bus routes, I thought I would enter this photo. I will first say this not one of my effects, it is the work of MikeNick and I'm sure he will not mind. Kingston-Upon-Hull corporation buses and trolleybuses used a number and only a sign of the route to be taken in both directions. Also on the band above the downstairs windows it only says "Corporation Transport". There is a small coat of arms,( three crowns) below those windows and on the front. To add to this picture, the trolleybus leaves the depot over the top of the only tram lines left in the city these days. Hull used a centre slot rail.
  7. I would recommend a visit to Sandtoft when it becomes open again. One picture for Bradford and one for what might have been the new system in Doncaster.
  8. 1992 When the lights changed I believe the horses where first away .
  9. Fear not Rob, when I saw this noble ferry it had been painted and was in service in the same place. As a Hull man, it was my duty to see all was right there. Regards John Wass.
  10. I can now report that the engineer has been and after some eight hours work, the new boiler is installed and working. I was impressed with this young man as he never stopped running. He left everything cleared up, the remains of the old boiler and the box the new one came in. Well done that man! Thank you.
  11. I'm waiting for the same to happen here this Friday after two weeks of no hot water.
  12. What ever is on that list, get it done straightaway otherwise, you are are in more trouble that you could handle . Always ask for a list so as you will not be blamed if herself forgets. When asked "When did you retire?" I always reply "1962, I just didn't tell any one!" I hope every thing else is going well.
  13. Hull has had it's share! Still it washes the horse muck out of the tramlines!
  14. More than a few years ago I was stopped in a shopping arcade in Leeds by a chap who said he could install the latest telephone plug and socket system in my house at a very cheap price. I told him "Oh no you cannot" and he said he could. This exchange when on for several minutes. Finally I took pity on him and explained I lived in Hull and we have our own telephone system there and BT never came in.
  15. Today marks another day in history for me and my wife. We have been married 55 years. I shall, just in case, some one informs my good lady, say no more!
  16. I have just received an e-mail from the French Ramma society telling me that their exhibition this October in Sedan has been cancelled. However the show for next year is on for the 9 & 10 October. If you are interested you should go to www.ramma.org . Having done their show three times now I can recommend it.
  17. On the left is the now late Labour M.P. for Hull North, Kevin McNamara. He held that post from 1966 to 2005, 39 years. The photo was taken at Hull Paragon.
  18. I met my wife in 1962. On the fateful afternoon my work colleague was giving me a lift on his motorbike and we had to stop at a set of traffic lights outside the local Y.P.I. "Learn to dance" said a poster on the wall and I thought that the Y.P.I. would be just the place to meet a young lady, and the very next week I met the lady who became my wife. We got married in 1965........... If only those lights had been at green.
  19. Sod's law says that when you have a pin sent to you, the lost one will be found.
  20. I hope enough time has gone by to tell all this on the subject of carrier landings. When the Buccs from the Arc came back to Brough there was one which didn't look very "right". The rear part of the fuselage was bent to put it mildly. Where on one side of the tail plane should have said "Royal Navy", it had been altered to "Fly Navy" and on the other side it said "Crash Navy". The aircraft was straightened and sent out to the R.A.F.
  21. Greetings young man but I'm not a new member. I think thanks to these newfangled systems mine decide to put me back to zero. I've been a member for a good many years now. As to the Tommy Wass, I was in it on August 20th 1968, the night my daughter arrived. I was in the middle of a Government training coarse and I was only able to go home to Hull at weekends.
  22. In 1968 our first daughter was born. Fast forward some 17 years and Heidi (she was 5ft 13ins, required an outfit for her to wear to front a "rock band" My mother had made an outfit for my wife to wear in 1968 and it was offered now. "Is it the real thing?" asked Heidi and the reply was "We wore it then and I could never find a belt to wear", replied the wife. By the way, I always did like the Mk1 mini skirts with stockings the girls wore. The Mk 2 with tights was not so good with no "laughing bands"
