  1. Any one worked out yet what taxation changes will be necessary to make up for the massively reduced amount of income to HMRC from VAT and fuel duty?
  2. The curve at Hall Royd Junction, Todmorden where the line to Copy Pit branches from the Leeds - Manchester Victoria route must rank highly on the list.
  3. And, as I'm sure you know Southernman46, the Northam curve used to be even tighter. It was eased, but only slightly, IIRC during the 1980s. Wasn't the work done at Northam at the same time that Southampton Tunnel was repaired and the main lines made bi-directional from Southampton Central to Northam?
  4. It's Grayling getting his defence in early as on 27th July the DaFT is due to publish stats on rail passenger numbers and crowding on weekdays in major cities in England and Wales for 2016. And the spin makes it looks like he's being proactive. The National Conditions of Carriage already give train operating companies the power to declassify first class accommodation.
  5. Here's 153335 crossing Somerleyton Swing Bridge on 5th May 2017. How about a sleeper service en route to its destination next, please.
  6. This will get messy and expensive as the current TransPennine Express franchise, which started on 1st April 2016, was let on the basis of electrification of the full route during the life of the franchise. I imagine that First Group's lawyers and accountants will be having a discussion with DaFT about the financial implications.
  7. Here is 66751 dragging IEP 800001 approaching Werrington Junction after overnight testing on 10th June 2015. And time for another wild card.
  8. You learn something new everyday. Far be it from me to criticise, but personally, I find the winter months are one of the best periods of the year for photography. The days can be crisp and clear with good light and less haze. With the sun, if it's out, being lower in the sky shadows are less harsh. Extremes of weather can make for some dramatic scenes too. Plus, you don't have to get up at 'stupid o'clock' if you want to take sunrise pictures. Perhaps he lacked Devine inspiration sometimes.
  9. How about 37403 'Isle of Mull', complete with white terrier. How about something from the London Underground next.
  10. Hythe Pier Railway on 7th April 2006. Have a wildcard on me.

Is that next years McLaren sans Honda engine? Might just be enough to tempt Alonso to stay with the team.

450s do run on the branch line from Brockenhurst to Lymington Pier.
  13. The times for the Dorset Coast Express are already in the system; Down run in the morning; http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U54916/2017/08/02/advanced Up run in the afternoon/evening http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U54922/2017/08/02/advanced I hope your son gets a good view.
  14. Whilst that is undoubtedly a possibility and may happen for key parts of the network, the issue is really whether or not the political will is there later for more electrification. And of course if the infrastructure companies with electrification skills and expertise will still be available.
  15. In my space-time continuum, no matter which analogue or digital clock that I use, Saturdays and Sundays are always shorter than any other week day. Mondays are always the longest day - especially Mondays in January.
  16. Sub-optimal is one description. Pi55 poor. Is another one.
  17. They don't look like the bogie tanks used on the Holybourne tanks, so presumably they are still in store. I seem to recall that they ended up at the Holybourne terminal after that flow ended.
  18. It was fairly entertaining listening to Jeremy Vine squirm earlier on when taken to task about his salary by a caller on his programme.
  19. A ripening field of wheat in the shadow of the currently silent Eggborough Power Station - 18th July 2017.
  20. Here you go; Knock yourself out with a wild card next.
  21. Websites like this one can be very helpful in this regard; https://www.splitticketing.com Other sites offering similar information are available.
  22. Pacer reflection at Batley, 17th July 2017.
  23. If it follows the same pattern as TransPennine Express when First Group took over the franchise in their own right from the previous joint First/Keolis franchise, then the new livery will be kept under wraps until the first day of the franchise. In that case the new livery was unveiled on two re-vinyled class 185s on day 1 (ironically the 1st April). If I was a betting person I'd put money on a re-vinyled 450, 444 and 158 or 159 being done for day 1. That's only speculation on my part I would add.

Best wishes to Martin Brundle for a speedy recovery from whatever it was that struck him down today. Paul di Resta did a pretty good job at covering in what I guess must have been a last minute substitution for Sky.
  25. Some of the tickets barriers in Northern's area have been modified by the addition of a scanner to read the QR code (the little matrix of black and white squares on the printed paper ticket). The barriers at Huddersfield, my local station have. The location of the scanner on the barriers is not immediately obvious though. I had to assist a chap a couple of weeks ago who was trying to work out how to force the new style paper ticket into the slot used for card tickets.
