  1. To clarify my position with reference to my previous post where I said that 'standard British OO layouts' tend to bore me unless the 'stand out' - well to give you an example : if the Fawley layout had the features listed above then the Fawley layout would stand out for me.
  2. I don't want to be negative about GMRC but TBH I thought the Railway Children should have won. I would probably spend very little time looking at the Fawley layout at a show. Why? Because I've seen that concept of layout dozens of times - I regret 'standard British OO' layouts bore me now unless they really stand out. The Santa layout from week 2 was much more the thing for me
  3. I'm having difficulty recognising you from your RMweb photo - which one are you?
  4. I never meant to add the balcony - not good enough modeller. I will add the decoration though. The prototype building was only an inspiration, I'm not making an accurate model of it. Early this afternoon I was here with it ....... the weathering pot is to stop the front wall falling over! Later after I've lowered the projectile walls..... low enough? There will be an annexe but that is just a random piece of plasticard to give you an idea .
  5. In all honesty I do not think that the producers have in any way patronised/humiliated/denigrated the participants or the hobby in general. I have not seen any posting from any of those who took part, on this or any other thread about the programme, that suggests that they were in any way looked down on or laughed at. In fact everything posted so far as given the impression that the programme makers were helpful/supportive and that participants would gladly go through the process again.
  6. As others may have said before - in the nicest possible way, YOU and other 'serious' modellers are NOT the target market. The general public (which IS the target market) seem to like it . Personally I love it - and so does my wife. And non-enthusiasts at work are talking to me about the programme. Job done, I'd suggest.
  7. Thanks for the ebay link - have now bought some and awaiting delivery - turns out that the seller was a fellow member of Twickenham MRC until he moved to Worthing ! I've known him for 20 years, but not heard of him for 10!
  8. Here is an update - still a work in progress! I may narrow the building or the projection as the building now stretches right up the platform - might want it to sit back a bit more.
  9. Ok - consultation over. I only hope I'm a good enough modeller to achieve the 'sticking out bit' ! Also signal cabin goes on the platform. Off to the work bench!
  10. Just to say that in my work stock room today a late twenties colleague (who knows of my interest) mentioned to me 'I've caught some of a programme about model railways - I quite liked what I saw'. At that point another colleague who had no knowledge of my hobby added ' Yes, my 5 year old really loves that programme. We've watched them all'. All three of of us then had a 10 minute sensible chat about the hobby. I rest my case!
  11. I had thought that the NMRA had standards that everyone used - I was wrong! Thanks , I have a DCC expert friend and hopefully he can sort something. The retailer is checking with Bachmann - thanks Paul
  12. There was a layout featured in RM at about that time or slightly later that had lots of working gimmicks - I remember rabbits appearing out of warren holes.
  13. I have decided that my building is too boring - the station needs 'sexing up'. I originally planned to have a signal cabin alongside like this ... But now I think the depot needs to be more interesting and so am planning to add an annexe - toilet block? Rail workers canteen? So there are two options Option # 1 Move the cabin forward and build the annexe quite narrow (low relief) behind it .... Option # 2 Make the annexe deeper but that leaves no room for the signal cabin I want to use the signal cabin somewhere and the platform seems a good place. The other option is to use it as a long abandoned building on the waste ground along the front of the layout which is just empty scrubland where an old freight yard used to be and this would be a building left behind when the yard closed, like this .... or this ..... In option 2 the line would be controlled from offices inside the depot. I think I prefer option 1 but not sure if it 'works' in the space available Opinions???
  14. Firstly let me say that my knowledge of DCC is very very basic and my knowledge of DCC sound is far less - and I'm not being modest! I have 6/7 non-British steam locos fitted with Soundtraxx Econami US sound chips.............. so far so good as I am learning how to adjust them. I have now bought a Bachmann (non-British) steam loco with factory fitted sound and I have discovered that the basic functions don't align with what I considered universal norms. BTW I use Digitrax. For example Fn 1 turns chuff on/off when I expected it to be the bell. It has been suggested to me that this Bachmann chip is set to European norms as opposed to US norms ............... does that make sense? The model was new but came with NO paperwork as regards DCC - none at all! Can anyone guide me on this please? Thanks
  15. Sorry, but GMRC is about the televisual - and it's the best publicity that the hobby has had for years - lets build on that.
  16. FYI the doorway is too low, that is still a work in progress and I will also shave something off the walls above the top row of windows. Paul
  17. Update on the depot.... Here is the inspiration .................... Or maybe it was this ... Either way, here is the model, so far
  18. Thanks for that I am using Bachmann 40ft gondolas - is there a size to fit?
  19. I don't think we should worry about Googlebox reviewing the programme ....................... There was a Monty Python sketch about Oscar Wilde whiche ended with ' The only thing worse than being talked about .............. is not being talked about. ' Googlebox review might get even more people looking for the programme on-line to see what all the fuss is about.
  20. TBH the shots of the loco with wheels off the track might have been shot after the actual judging and just cut into the final version
