  1. As the OP may I thank everyone for their input. I think we mainly (no pun intended) agree that a main line is just that …... a line (noun) and main being a word to describe it (ie and adjective). The issue for me is in the concept of steam that runs on the main line. So is it a) Mainline steam b) Main-line steam or c) Main line steam I think it's not © but cannot decide between (a) or (b)
  2. In the context of 'mainline steam' , a fellow pedant has told me that it is a compound adjective and therefore should be 'main-line steam'
  3. Thanks for that analysis - I think I agree with you. So in my context of my layout board text it might read like this : ' … I went to the S&C to photograph mainline steam which was running on the main line...'
  4. Without wishing to start a long debate on the issue of 'does it matter?' all I can say as the OP on this one I can say that it does to me. I am preparing a display board that will front my exhibition layout and therefore represent me and my values and one of those values is correct English. It is, in its own way, a form of rivet-counting, but that's just me and I regret I am pedantic in this regard.
  5. My question Should it be mainline or main line? Or are they both correct but different? Version 1. If you like steam on major routes, do you like 'mainline steam' or 'main line steam' ? Version 2. If there is a major route under your bedroom window, is it ' a mainline ' or ' a main line ' My personal view is that it's - mainline steam running on the main line - your view???
  6. Whilst I might personally agree with many of the comments/sentiments expressed about this item and this seller, the fact remains that he DOES often sell these items at these kind of prices and what's more impressive from his point of view is that he has a 99.8% positive feedback score - that's 599 very happy customers and 1 very unhappy one. So who are we to make fun of him?
  7. Some time ago I asked RMwebbers if they had a S12 caboose they might like to sell - well I've bought one now! This time round I'm looking for a type 22 YZ , YW, RW or RZ in the red/white livery - anyone got one to sell?
  8. Apologies for not replying for a while - have been moving house! TBH I have absolutely no idea what a PR3 is.
  9. I've had one offer already so that's progress! Trainee driver Luke joins us on Sunday Jan 13!!
  10. You are correct with those figures. Americans in general don't like the metric system and so their O gauge is not 7mm to 1ft (1/43) but 1/4 inch to 1ft (1/48)
  11. OK, the house move has happened and so the next stop is Stevenage on Jan 12/13. I operate Beijiao with a joint team with Al Turner's 'Bridge at Remagen' and with 8 exhibitions per year planned (between us!) we need to look to expand the 'team'. So if anyone would like to become a 'team member' there is an open invitation to come to Stevenage and meet the existing team and have some 'driver training' on Beijiao. Our existing team is quite broadly based - I have been a modeller for 61 years and yet Martin (our latest recruit) has absolutely no modelling experience whatsoever - but he did visit China 13 times to photograph steam (first time was in 1986!) - so if YOU would like to 'have a go!' please PM me and we will try to fit you in for some driver training at Stevenage - probably Sunday is the better day as Saturday is nearly already fully booked for training purposes.
  12. I am planning a weekend away in Warrington for a party of model railway enthusiasts sometime (anytime) in 2019 coming from south London and whilst we have something specific to do on the Sunday we are looking for something to amuse us on the Saturday. Are there any preserved railways or model railway exhibitions in the area we might target?
  13. It just goes to show how we are all different and have different 'issues' that tick our boxes ……………….. so far no-one has mentioned the layout that was IMHO the best layout at the show - IRAQ in WW2 - just about the cleverest layout I've ever seen and yet not one mention in dispatches.
  14. Thanks for the suggestion - I tried downloading it last night after reading this post but so far have not succeeded in doing so - will try again!
  15. I regret all are MERG C-Bus types - in retrospect I wish I had gone that route!
  16. Hi I know virtually NOTHING about electronics in general and DCC in particular. I have relied on a friend to install CML DAC20's but the promised route selection has not materialised I need help/advice to programme the route selection please.
  17. And if you have any interest in Chinese model railways then do come and say 'hello' on stand 123 because our 'team' will be helping to operate 'The Bridge at Remagen' and we will be here next year with our HO chinese layout!
  18. The bridge at Remagen(WW2 German N gauge) is up and (nearly) running - see us at stand 123.
  19. I am at the Peterborough show with Al Turner's ww2 German n gauge layout The Bridge at Remagen - come and say 'hello' if you attend !
  20. I am at the Peterborough show with Al Turner's ww2 German n gauge layout The Bridge at Remagen - come and say 'hello' if you attend !
  21. With the house move just seven days away now all work on the layout has to stop whilst we pack everything for the move - especially as I'll be away at the Peterborough show this weekend with a certain WW2 German layout - please say 'hello' if you attend. So the last job has been to semi-permanently fix down the two latest buildings - in part to avoid damage having them transported in separate boxes! In both cases they are screwed in from underneath so that if needed I can remove them for upgrades/repairs. Firstly the freight shed - it was on the layout at Bristol but just sat on the platform, not fixed down. I would still like to add more interior detail and I will be able to as I can lift it off at some future time. Secondly, the depot which now has the annexe permanently attached and all the windows fitted. Hopefully I can add a few more details (like doors!) before Stevenage in January.
  22. I'm not sure if that last idea you floated was a serious suggestion - but I think displaying the layout at a public exhibition without the roof in place is a brilliant idea. Much better to have it displayed separately so that serious modellers can appreciate the modelling skill involved and discuss the construction of it whilst at the same time all exhibition visitors (not necessarily serious modellers) can now see the trains properly.
  23. Probably my favourite layout at Warley this year. In fact all the European imports were excellent in my opinion.
  24. Just two weeks to go to our next 'BIG' show - Peterborough! We've made many improvements since Aly Paly - here's one - far more trees along Russell Road …………. Hope to meet some of you at Peterborough!
