It would seem that sadly West Coast Railways have had a fire at their Carnforth base this morning. I appears that it was in one of their Northern Bell mk2 Coaches.

And the down side I work in my local A&E and SHMBO works on one of the wards, and spend my time off wondering if we will both escape any serious illness (along with our friends and family) in the coming weeks as we both have serious health conditions, but apparently not serious enough to be isolated...

 I think it was more of a change of direction rather than reversing, the diesel from Blackpool would be on the South end of the train then it would come off and an electric would be put on the North end for the journey North.

Wow. Stunning layout.

I was looking at Sedbergh as a layout myself a good few years ago. There was a local railway photographer from Grange-over-sands called Peter Robinson had a large number of photos on a photo hosting web site, but the pages seemed to disappear after he passed away some years ago. Hi,

Does anybody if/where you can buy 4mm checkrail chairs for bullhead code 75 rail?

I need about 70 of them for a bridge. I have tried several times since December time, if not earlier to contact C+L  to see if they sell them both on their contact form and telephone but have not been able to get an answer.

Do C+L or any other company make them?

Err... Furness Railway number 3 was built in 1846 and owned by several companies up to and including BR prior to going to the NRM collection, granted it was a none runner but it pre dates your NLR crane tank by 12 years. This would possible make it the oldest loco at nationalisation, and quite possible the a contender for the 1923 grouping!

Your original post does not say the loco needs to be a runner, so......

Well.... Having started a topic regarding imitation rail joints http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/136320-immitation-rail-joints/ this week I thought I would make a start....

So out of the box came the nice new shinny bullhead points, well one set... and lets start weathering... Having looked at these on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Rly and Google they (depending on size, style and length) have one joint on each switch rail and the two outer rails, combined with rust and oil around the sliding chairs. So lets make Peco's look a bit more like the real thing.

First the rails got a coat of rust, then four fishplates added as per the locations above. To add the fishplates meant opening them out a bit and feeding them between the rail and the sleepers with a pair of fine tweezers, then crimping them in place.

Next came the job of making the rails look like a proper joint without cutting them. So my first thought was either a very fine saw through the rail head, but this may leave to bigger gap! Next idea was scratch the metal and highlight it with matt black paint, and this was the option I went with. First scoring the rail with a fine watch makers screwdriver and then opening it up a bit with a sharp and firm scalpel blade, and finishing off by picking out the gap with black paint.

Then adding some black paint around the slide chairs

Next up is some oil wash around the switch rails, stock rails and slide chairs, and some sleeper grime to finish.

Yes that's how I did it. A pair of very fine tweezers were very handy to feed them in and pull you into place . Also now managed to score across the top of the rail head with a watch makers screwdriver and open up the make with a strong blade. Got matt black paint into the gap..... It's starting to look like a proper joint!

So last night I thought I should start to weather the points in a bid to actually get something done!

I had previously discussed the idea of adding fishplate to the flexi bullhead track at 60ft lengths to make it look something like the real thing.... So I thought I would start it with the points...

Granted this is just the fishplates added and the weathering is just started, but.....

Not sure if you are still looking for information on this still, but today I saw a copy of the Cumbrian Railways Association magazine from August 2018. It had a page about the Workington TPO in the 70's. Three photos show the train. It looked like one sorting van and three BG's. Two of the photo's had class 40's and one had a 25.

Hopefully this will be of some use.

Around that time there was a few Regional Railways loco hauled trains around the North West. One set was a on the Barrow -Preston run but did one return trip to Man Vic. It was a 31 with 5 mk2's. Two BSO's and three TSO's, occasionally there would be a mk1in there. One of the brake vans was always an exNSE one, but it had the red stripe painted grey but had what looked like a coat of arms on it, whilst the rest were in Regional Railways livery. At the start I recall some of the TSO's (both mk1 and 2) in NES livery but without the NSE writing on them.

If the set was failed we sometimes ended up with 2 x 101's and I remember one of these with a Strathclyde set paired with an NSE on a trip up to Barrow

There where a few of these sets about around the Blackpool, Crewe, Liverpool and North Wales coast. I know that one train from Barrow per day went to Man Vic and some from Blackpool went there as well.

Regional Railways ran a number of "special days" such as the Longsight open day and you could end up anything on the front. I recall seeing a 60, 37, 56 and 2 20's

I guess, like other have said that the Regional Railways stock will have been exNSE stock

57601 sitting in Carnforth yard today (28/09/2018)

Well a small but very important update!

1. I now have one box of bullhead flexy track and two bullhead points. Depending on which end I start relaying one of the points my get modified to make a trap point
2. Having being looking at a model railway group on Facebook I find the someone has a 3mm ply, laser cut, station building of Haverthwaite. These are for sale on ebay for less than £20. Guess what I have just bought...… The same man how organised this for him self (and not the man that makes the kits) has one of Haverthwaite signal box, and one of the good shed. But he tells me that these are a one of, although the signal box kit seems to be available.... Would it be wrong to contact the supplier and ask if he can do one of the good shed????
3. SHMBO said that the house needs work doing to it.... So apparently we are getting a new kitchen, the house re-rendered and the roof redone. The roofer is also putting in a loft window, although I may have neglected to mention this to her..... o well, hello new railway room....

So, I plan to start the replying soon, so will pop up few photos. Likewise the same when the station arrives. Hopefully Haverthwaite station will not arrive the same day that I am at Haverthwaite station.....

What may appear to be a daft question...… but...…

Having taken the plunge and got a box of Peco Bull head rail, I was thinking about making the 1yrd flexi track look like 60ft lengths of rail without cutting through the rails, but putting a fishplate in every 240mm so you get the 1 yard of continues connection, yet from above it looks like a joint!

Having thought about this, I have come up with the idea of scoring the rail, and then highlighting the score with black paint.

What would be the best way to score the rails deep enough without cutting them, of making the gap look unrealistically large? Or has anyone got any other thoughts of how to achieve this?
