  1. Wow. I have just found this thread.

Thank god it's not just me!

I started my layout a few years back, and all was going well. Then some personal problems hit and my wife also got attacked at work. She ended up having her knee broken by a patient at where she worked and due to other health issues had to leave her job (and I am glad she did). This ended up causing a major impact with money, which in turn leads onto a troublesome home life. She got a new job which eased things, and we got a finances back in order after a lot of hard work for the pair of us. Then it was the turn of my job, I managed to move wards at work (out of the frying pan and into the fire!), but I feel better for it in myself.

Now I have found time to get back and involved in my local steam railway, bought some more stock for my layout, and even found time and energy to do a bit of work on it.

What I have found to be useful (like others have said), is to set myself a small goal. I am working on one board at a time. This months task is to paint the track on that board. Granted, it's not a big job, but every little helps.

Now having found this thread, and typed this I feel like I have been to the Betty Ford clinic!!!!

    Kind regards

  2. The problem with single car trains is that each set must have an accessible toilet to comply with passenger with reduced mobility (PRM) regulations that come into effect in 2020. That would mean taking out seats, further reducing seating capacity

Would an option to this build without a toilet? Or to put it another way, would any new or rebuilds have to have a toilet?

  3. Primitive insulation/draft excluder??     If you have them, please could you post more pictures of Mk1 'internal' construction details.

    Thanks,

    Bill

Don't have any more at the moment, but I will take some more for you next time I am up there (Sunday week or Thursday week depending).

Yes I think it is very likely to do with stopping the steel supporting the interior panelling from corroding. There is mention of the problems on page 44 of Parkin. The steel was coated with bitumen paint in later builds, and I suppose the tape is acting as a de-bonder to stop the bitumen from adhering to the timber. Where and when was your coach constructed?

Made in Swindon 1957.Hadn't thought about the bitumen bonding.

    Many thanks

  4. Hi Guys,

Doe anyone know why fabric tape was put between the steel strengthening and the internal wooden panelling inmk1 coaches?

    AItysx.jpg

I found this yesterday in a coach that is currently being overhauled. The white tape is attached all down the side where the metalwork is in contact with the internal wood panels. Granted that there is not a lot of it left, and it seems to have been stuck down with paint over the years. It is about an inch wide and fabric.

The only idea that one of my mates had was to stop condensation between the metalwork and the thin wooden panelling. But then their is nothing between the metal work and the wood blocks that the panelling gets tacked to?

    Thanks

  5. Coniston is just such an unusual "Terminus". As with many South Wales lines the line continued as a single line to some "goods" facilities beyond it. No doubt they could be tailored to suit operational needs.

    Keith

There was a branch to mines beyond Coniston. But the general freight facilities were adjacent to the passenger station. I suspect the OP would not have room to model Coniston or he would not have asked the question at all.

I do have a version of Coniston in mind, but rather than what is in effect a through platform, my line for industrial use comes back out parallel to the main line. In the planning stage I thought that I had enough room for a goods shed, but now having second thought location.....

Thanks for all the positive replies so far

    Kind regards

  6. Hi All,

    Daft question time......

Looking at the space on my ongoing layout build I am toying with moving the goods shed as I may have been optimistic with the space that I have.....

I was wondering if any branch line terminus stations had the goods shed away from the main station i.e 300 to 500 feet away (around 1500mm give or take on the layout), and have a separate entrance to the main station yard?

Information that may be useful to you

    • Ex Furness/LMS area
    • BR Transition era
    • 4mm scale

Many thanks in advance for any help

  7. Thank you for photo but I prefer Regional railway Not trans pennine

    Hi,

What I was trying to say is the mk1 BG that you have in post 1, is a Trans-Pennine or Provincial coach. It is not Regional Railways. Whilst the is almost the same, it has a different colour grey for the Regional Railways livery. As far as I am aware Regional Railways never had a BG. ScotRail used the same livery as well.

The photos were to show you what the model is.

This link may be of some help http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/45179-regional-railway-trans-pennine-provincial-livery-help/

    Kind regards

  8. An out of order sign is irrelevant in this case. The coach was not safe to use. Not everyone that travels on our preserved line can read English, then there is the passengers that have vision problems be that something in your eye or some degree of blindness.

As for the people that say it was busy and they don't have many coaches... Tuff, if it is not safe to use then take it out of traffic. Or in the case of this one don't let it into traffic!

  10. Well... It's been a little time since I have done any work on the layout......

Still, I seem to have found a jar of "modelling mojo" buried on the work bench last week, and even found time to play with full size trains...

I have been looking at a photo in a book of Levens Junction box which was at the Ulverston end of the Levens Viaduct about 1/2 a mile from Plumpton Junction. together with Greenodd Junction they formed a triangle at the connection for the Lakeside branch. However, finding a decent photo has proved somewhat challenging. It appears to be the same Furness design as Dalton Junction box, of which photos are a bit easier to get hold of. So hear is the start of my attempt...

A day of jacking and packing track. I have got to say P-way work is less painful in 00 gauge

  11. Well according to a friend on Facebook. The first class 88 is been delivered to Carlisle on Tuesday by road. His statement is copied and pasted below. 88002 apparently.

"Not strictly rail I know but for anyone living near the M6 the first Sparkycat or 88 is enroute by road to Carlisle for delivery on Tuesday so should transit Preston area either late Monday or crack of Sparrows Tuesday. If not deemed relevant feel free to delete. The remainder are to ship in via Workington in two batches of 4 and 5 with the 7 new 68s not far behind"

  12. some of my locos will run one way some the other, its a thing thats never bothered me,

but for those who it is a problem for, this may be of interest. just noticed this on mine

    IMGP6108.jpg

Hattons are aware of the issue re the polarity and have kindly supplied this link:

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ec1gewKNUVkFkssmLsoto3olUxLT6X_9_a2r74sGSN8/edit?hl=en_US&pli=1

Its an easy job to do, 5 minutes or so, BUT, if you are not confident about doing it, dont attempt it and send it back.

Just to resurrect this topic..... I didn't realise about the polarity issue till I got a second class 28 for Christmas and spotted the sticker  saying "polarity corrected" which the first one doesn't have. The link above no longer works. Does any body have the details of what I need to do to correct the first one please?

Also does it affect the loco when been used in DC, DCC or both?

    Many thanks

  13. An emergency trip to the dentist for my good lady meant some time to kill in Grange Over Sands and around the time of the DRS 37 working...... So as the weather was nice I nipped down to Kents Bank (Wed 7th Sept 2016)

  14. 401 is with Caroline.

    402 is on CC duties.

    403 is on Kingmoor.

409 is on Kingmoor showing transfer status.

    422 is on CC duties.

423 is at RVEL Derby for an exam.

425 is on Kingmoor under repair.

409 has been problematetic recently on the Cumbrian Coast trains. 425 has been out of service at Kingmoor for a couple of weeks.

These two probably aren't out and about much because it's been a while since they last had big exams. 425 was overhauled three years ago or more I think and I don't recall 409 been overhauled recently either.

I saw 409 on  light engine move today (sandwiched between 68017 and 37059) from Kingmoor to Crewe

On the way back to the car I was "engaged" in conversation by the owners of the chairs... Two gentlemen of the parish who enquired as to what I was doing. They tell me that they like to head up there with the dog and a beer or two (cases!). Apparently they like to sit and chill enjoying a beer and watching the trains. Far enough, I have been invited to join them should I wish :O  But in all farness to them, they were very polite and didn't give me any issues.
