  1. The thing is Dave that you do let people know your real name and you do make references to your private life

    .

I feel it a rather sad indictment of the age we live in that John Isherwood has come under such savage attack for speaking out.

There can be no place in a free society for these secretive (insert expletive of your choice). To be serious they are evil and a threat to our free and open society.

    Bernard,

I do make reference, I think I've said in the past that as Lady Bacon is a local Councillor we have to have all our details published in the register of interests along with my personal details even though I'm not elected.

There are some very nasty individuals out there with some very strange ideas about what behaviour is acceptable, I have been questioned under caution by the Police in my own living room after an accusation of assault was made against me by a local man who didn't like women (wife) in what he perceived to be positions of power.   It was all boll*cks as I just showed the holiday booking which proved I was on a ship mid Atlantic at the time of the alleged assault. To say it caused my wife some distress is an understatement and all of this was from a pensioner who was described as a "Stalwart of the community", most that heard about it were disgusted but there were a few that said "he deserved it because he's got money" .....I kid you not !

I don't think John has been "attacked" as such, I just think he's rather naive to think everyones life is the same as others.

  2. I would simply say to those who resort to pseudonyms to 'protect their identity' from employers - get a grip; the days when employers could discriminate on the grounds of personal opinion are long gone. Do you really think that HR managers haunt RMweb in the hope that an emplyee will say something 'politically incorrect'.

A gentleman I know is employed to monitor social media (of all sorts) looking for comment on several companies, when found it is traced to the specific poster and they are then monitored.  Very sophisticated algorithyms (?) are used to find content.  I was rather naive and never thought it happened but trust me it does and is far more intrusive than you can imagine.

In my own experience, when I applied for a job on BR in 1977 I was advised by the lady we knew who worked in the area managers office, not to mention at all that I had any interests in railways but to focus on something like photography as if an interest was shown I wouldn't make 2nd interview.

    As for names.

When I joined here 9-10 years ago (?) it invited me to choose a username, it didn't say "use your name" so I chose what was to me an amusing name, my real name is in my signature strip and I'm not bothered whether people use either.

I would say that I am the membership secretary for a group of less than 500 and within the membership there are several that share the same forename and surname, This forum is something like 10-15,000 members and so who gets priority to actually use their name and who has to be No 2/3/4 ?

  3. Another icon of the past bites the dust.

I had an interview for a job with Yellow Pages, then I was offered a job somewhere else. I'm still in that job, wonder what would have happened if I'd taken the Yellow Pages job?

You'd have been endlessly hassling people like me to take out bigger adverts.

I stopped having a listing in them about 15 years ago, each year they were a PITA as the reps would be in the area for just a week drumming up business and pushing you to take a bigger ad. Each year I just did a line entry but had to check the paperwork when it came as they'd try and get you to take a box (2 lines IIRC) which was more money. One year I got so fed up of the rep who kept badgering I told her to F**k off and never bother me again, About a week later I got the paperwork for the line entry I'd asked for. After that episode I started to enquire more about where my work was coming from and it turned out that barely 1 job a month was yellow pages, so I binned it.

I did also have a line entry in Thomson which did produce more than YP and was less money, I let that run for 2 years longer than the YP ad but again found I didn't need it.

  4. Helpful advice needed !

We have a sort of narrow indoor/outdoor double height space across the back of our old stone house. It has a transparent polycarb  roof (with no openings) and is lined on either wall with mature indoor/outdoor plants.

Trouble is a gawky adolescent (teenage spots) Robin is intent on making this vertical slot its territory. It just sits waiting for the garden door to open onto our outdoor table and slips happily between us inside while we are carrying our snack/lunch/tea out.

The little bird is extremely reluctant to be coaxed out over and over again.

All that would be fine except that wife has a  new child  5 month old cat banging on the adjacent kitchen door going wild with determination to rid us of the bird.

    dh

There's a really easy answer to this one.

Get rid of the cat......... :mosking:

  5. For small window panes, I use liquid glazing.  I think it gives a better impression of single panes and also give the impression of thinner glazing bars.

    I've not used that yet.

For thin glazing bars I score the clear perspex then rub some white paint across it and clean off quickly, this leaves a thin white line, thinner than I can cut in styrene.

    Is that for twins?

  7. Single brick arches aren't unknown, if the window isn't too wide then they're sufficient to carry the load. In a signal box which has a timber upper half then there'll be a wall plate to carry the framing, so all the weight of the upper half is more evenly distributed.

With the windows themselves if they're not fixed how about laying them flat on some emery paper and rubbing the thickness away ? they do look a bit too 'chunky' to me so reducing the thickness would make a real difference.

Other than that, looking really good  :good:

  8. In the late 70's early 80's, there was a group of us that went to the cinema most weeks for something to do irrespective of what the film was.   I've sat through quite a lot of what could easily be called shite horror from the USA. Two that spring to mind are

"Phantasm" and "Monster" (which was "Humanoids from the deep" in the US) both of which sent me to sleep in the cinema.  I realised after a while that when you've seen the result of a 'one under' a couple of times, there's no gory scenes which can make you jump........although I did raise an eyebrow during "Alien" (a favourite)

  9. If I may ask a silly question please .... historically, was this loco ever used to haul goods or was it always a passenger train ?

Welcome Victor. Questions are never silly...answers maybe..

It was probably not unknown for them to do some freight work but I don't think I've ever seen any pictures showing them on it, They were a primary express locomotive and would be rostered for that work. The GN had many 0-8-0, 0-6-0 and 2-4-0 locos for goods which were better suited.

Edit to add the Rapido newsletter which has a second sample of the Single along with a projected timescale.

  10. The issue I have is that if I give the DVD to a charity shop someone else may waste 50p on it, and then lose 79 minutes of their life to it. If I throw it away then it is clogging up the landfill with dire waste that Mother Earth doesn't deserve...,so am I stuck with it for life? ☹️

Use it on a stick as a pigeon scarer above your veg plot.

At least you'll get to enjoy the veg.............parp....

  11. Of the sort David Cameron famously bought for his Oxfordshire garden in which to write his memoir: 'How I Negotiated Britain into Brexit' .

    dh

So after 5+ pages of discussion about trucks there's always one that has to try and bring up 'Brexit'  :nono:

Just to correct you "Call me Dave' brought a 'Shepherds hut' which is nothing like the sort towed by travelling showmen.

  12. I wonder if the platoon control system can cope with the sharp lane changes associated with contra-flows?

I'm guessing they'd break the platoon up and revert to 3 vehicles.

Road trains were ruled out only a short time ago as unsuitable for this country. While on a motorway there wouldn't be too much of a problem, you have to actually access it, and motorways are sometimes less than 20% of a journey.

  13. Another mystery:

After feeding a host of house sparrows (about 60 at a time) for many months, they have suddenly disappeared.

This means that a full feeder lasts half a day instead of 15 minutes.

All the other suspects still visit.

It has only been the last couple of years that they have learned to eat peanuts from the feeders.

I wonder where they are feeding now?

They'll be out in the fields where foodstuffs are plenty this time of year, They're seed eaters and lots of plants will be going to seed at this time.

  14. I understand what Martin is saying and think this is probably what Peco have done to make it look 'right', it's a shame that Peco don't explain how they achieved the look, but I doubt they would tell their customer base they've been modelling 4'1.5" considering the angst it causes.

I've actually found it an informative discussion and have learnt something.
