  1. Funny enough I was in a neighbours loft this morning, 15mm hot pipe (mains pressure as combi boiler) a fitting came off the shower feed from a previous DIY job (Speedfit push fitting onto chrome pipe is a no no) they're away so granny is house sitting and it flooded the house with boiling hot water,  She couldn't get near it so came across to me.

Turned off in the road immediately but the volume of water in the loft was unbelievable,  it had been running for 2-3 minutes.

Now I've dried out and heading outside....to get wet in the rain.....going to be one of those days!

  2. Thank you Chris, or is that Dave ;)

To me, the chassis makes sense as it's literally a simple 0-4-0 chassis that can be slotted into another set of frames to pivot into.

It does away with the normal balancing problems with 4-4-0's. A real loco would normally take some of the weight of the loco so why not our models?

If Tony is happy and that I don't get called out over the weekend to replace real trains with buses, I can take new photos of the loco and of the chassis on its own?

I would really appreciate that. I did think about selling the kit on and picking up the Hornby model but I decided that I'd have more enjoyment building the Mallard even if it was a difficult build.

It's a little way off as the workbench currently has a master for resin casting some 9T GN 4 plank wagons on it, then I have some more coach kits to build as well as club boards to make, more wiring in the control panel etc etc.........I think you get the picture..

  3.  you can end up with a tax enquiry, and they can happen anyway. To a qualified(by experience or formal qualification) person

But that's not a problem as every year they send me an invitation to pay for their "tax enquiry insurance' in case I should be picked for an enquiry.

My answer is that if something is wrong and gets flagged up by HMRC I'd want to know why they didn't spot it,  The reason that comes back is that I could be chosen at random and that an 'interview' with HMRC would cost £2-3000.

I've not paid any of these 'invitations' and the running total if I had would be just over £7,500 .....I nice little earner for no work.

  4. Uncomfortable memories of his version of Pulp's 'Common People' and the fact that someone must have thought this was a good thing.

I was given the CD for a xmas present last year......I actually put it on the iPod so when things are crap at work I play it to remind myself just how bad things can really be.

  5. Possibly, in part.

However, there is a definite (in my view) increasingly selfish disregard for those around us. Whether it is the way people drive, throw away litter, block the supermarket aisles, don't say thank you when you make way for them, etc. people are increasingly inconsiderate of others.

I'd agree with this as being the reason.

At present I'm converting a shop to residential and it's on the main walking route from the station into town. As people walk by we always say hello or at least acknowledge they are there but we get nothing in response,  they either just ignore us or are so wrapped up in their smartphone/ipod they just don't see anyone or thing.  Yesterday I was up a ladder with cones around it and it was an eyeopener how many just walked straight through either not seeing it, or ignoring it as it inconvenienced them.

Put that behaviour behind the wheel of something with a bit of 'go' and you have a typical selfish driver.

  6. At the risk of taking this off topic, to me the problem isn't so much about accountants (although there are issues there, as highlighted by Edwardian's predicament) but rather why is the tax code so complicated that people need to use accountants?

Depending on what you need doing a lot of the work is simple and straightforward. Most I know get their payroll done by accountancy firms and they charge a minimum rate plus an amount per employee. HMRC actually give you all the info as well as calculators to do it yourself. An example was those I had as PAYE, it took me less than 1 hour a month to do the payroll whereas another I know paid just over £700 a year for the same amount of work. I remember when I showed him he said how they'd made out it was really difficult and that only 'accountants' could do the work as HMRC wouldn't accept from anyone else.

  7. Hello Tony,

Thought I'd share my D16/3, this is a old photo so could do with a up to date one. Built from a Mallard models kit when I was about 23?

At the time the kit was only £50.

The front bogie carries a lot of the locos weight and uses the weird chassis as it ensures all wheels remain in contact with the track for power collection and traction.

That looks excellent. I've got a Mallard D16 in the 'to do' pile but it did go to the bottom when I looked at the chassis. Whenever I think about getting it out there's always lots of wagons to build....luckily...

  8. I know from talking to people in town that either worked in the shed or picked up from it, that as well as the shunting engine and horses, pinch bars would be used to move wagons inside the shed. This wouldn't be for great distances but van/wagon lengths.

Also for ease of unloading a lot of sheds had a small hand crane on the unloading platform that could swing between the wagon and the cart loading bay.

  9. Never seen or used a steel padstone, was always told to use reinforced concrete block padstones. Interesting

Padstones can be either concrete, steel or engineering brick. What they can't be is soft block or brick. The advantage with the steel pads is they don't need to be so thick and so it doesn't mean chopping down behind the existing ceiling joists.

  10. Getting what I want laser cut, that Sir is a BRILLIANT idea !!

    THANK YOU :-)

There is a small laser cutting company just round the corner. They have done work for me before. I will get them to do the hard part and I'll take a rubber mould off my work and cast in resin (my business).

I'll make the whole bridge available for sale as a kit off my site.

Thank you, now I can really get going.

P.S, It's the definition I want from the moulding, not the bothered about the thickness.

I've only cast coaches, wagons etc in resin, but I would have thought that the crisp sharp detail on a laser cut face would degrade the mould too quickly to make it viable. At least with SEF (for e.g.) the face allows for easy release.

  11. I've had the same accountant since 1988 and I'm happy with him, I would say that if he retires I'd move practise though as I wouldn't trust the rest of them.

I'd ask them to quantify the work and why they feel they've been 'underpaid' when they would have set the rate in the first place.

  12. Hi Guys,

Does anybody know of large sheets of 00 moulded brick sheets, something like A4?

I'm needing the injection moulded of the type Wills have, NOT the nasty embossed or vac form!

The Wills sheets are perfect, but the sheet size is very small and a total pain to match up.

Been looking for months now :-(

    Thanks,

Although you don't want the vac formed type, the reason the Wills are a pain to match is because they aren't a good or accurate impression of brickwork whereas the south Eastern Finecast ones are.

Out of interest is there a specific reason for wanting a thick sheet like the Wills in A4 ? if it is to avoid laminating then the large sheet will still need it.

  13.  This is probably the noisiest part of the whole job.

Probably not.....if they've got a chemmie toilet (A Turdis) just wait for the cacophony to start. Most in the trade have various 'Fart Apps' on the phone. all used to good effect.**

I'll check what they've done once they finish for the day and see how much debris has been left.

I wouldn't .....especially if you're prone to crying when you realise how much your house cost...

** I used mine in Heathrow term 5 toilets  .....there's quite an echo..

  14. We had a GNR Society trip there earlier in the year to see the Ex GN coaches they have either under restoration or in the vintage train. We had a superb day and were made very welcome. Sadly there wasn't anything in steam so as a recompense we were given a walk through the 12W LNWR Dining car which was excellent.
