  1. I presume "Little Barford" worked at that location.  Plse does anyone know what livery she carried then?

I only recall it at CEGB  Acton Lane Power Station, North London.

That's how I remember it looking when I used to watch it pushing wagons through the tippler at Little Barford power station.  If anyone had asked me, I'd've said it was a very grubby green colour, but it's a long time ago now!

I know a little about 'Little Barford'

Livery at Little Barford power station was blue along with 'Edmonson'  it moved under its own power in the 60's from LB up the GN main line to Sandy, then through the transfer sidings to the Cambridge to Bedford line and along to Bedford where it worked at Goldington Power station before being moved to Acton.

I often wondered why 'Edmonson' was left at LB but it turns out the power station was originally "The Edmonson Power company'  I'm sure I remember a 4W diesel shuffling 16T coal wagons about when we used to pass by in the late 60's early 70's, again it was in Blue.

  2. The Biggleswade bricks are very similar to the whites that would have come from Arlesey? My parents house was a similar brick and was built in 1884 and I'm sure that was London Brick from Arlesey. Certainly the bricks didn't have any pick tones.

Arlesey white bricks really are very 'white' whereas the B'wade ones have a yellow tone. It is possible they are from Arlesey but I haven't seen them weather like that.

For info, The Arlesey brickworks didn't become part of London Brick until 1930(?) before that there were 4-5 private brickworks. One of them was "The Great Northern Brick Company" although I don't think it was a company one as it opened in 1852/3 and was possibly adopting the name from the recently opened ECML it was next to

This is an example of Arlesey whites when clean.

This was part of Fairfield Hospital.

  3. Perfect in regards to floor fitment .my floor was built on top of the beems. Making it that much closer to the ceiling. I'm imagining your beams would be very near the size used on mine.

That's actually very unusual for  beams for a loft conversion, the usual practise is to place the beams above the existing ceiling and them suspend the new floor from the beams between the ceiling joists or place it between the web of the beam.

Regarding a lock, So long as the door is a fire door with the correct intumescent strip and fire stops, has a catch and pergo closure, that's enough to satisfy Building control

  4. I was forced to sit though this steaming pile because I was on a plane flying across the Atlantic and the doors were locked!

For me it was "Armageddon Day"....I've still not recovered from that pile of shite and that must have been 15 years ago......never flew with the airline again.

  5. Oh I don't know!

I think we all remember this and the Jones goods is most definitely pre grouping

First film I remember seeing at the Cinema...Magic Lantern house. Filmed between Bedford and Southill on the original Midland (pre-group so on topic) route into London. Terry Thomas ends up in Old Warden tunnel.

Not so the power station you can just see top right

Goldington Power station (Bedford) served by the former Bedford and Cambridge then LNWR Oxford-Cambridge

  6. This is excellent !  Some impressive work so far.

I have some of Franks etches and met him at Ally pally when I manned the GNRS stand, they've moved up the list with just a few things to finish first and I'm looking forward to cracking on with them.

  7. Another really wonderful day today.

Up at six thirty am to be at Castle Hill Hospital by nine fifteen am to have MORE probes by way of an endoscopy AND a biopsy combined to make me feel even more like a drugged cabbage.

Then after two hours in the recovery room I was cheerfully informed that I will be called back in to discuss the results and why some alien lump's made itself at home inside my right lung and how they'll evict it and if that doesn't include some kind of micro flame thrower then I'll be more than just a little surprised!

Oh joy of joys, yet another hilarious day to come. Just can't wait!

    Allan

Just a quick story on a similar situation.

In 1982 my father came home for his regular medical, the Dr picked up an anomaly which turned out to be an enormous 'shadow' on is right lung. He had very advanced and late stage lung cancer. He was taken into Papworth hospital and operated on and 90% of his lung removed, after a short recovery and discharging himself against Dr's orders he went back to work in the USA. He was also told that he had at the maximum just 3 years to live and to put his affairs in order as he was not going to enjoy good health and would be incapacitated.......He didn't tell me any of this until 1998 ! apparently he didn't want to worry us !!

He worked until 1994 (aged 74), enjoyed good health apart from being a bit breathless if he walked a few miles and said "Doctors...don't know anything".

    I couldn't help but laugh.

  8. Rubbish - I've never said I 'don't like' commercial magazines. In fact I subscribe to some and selectively purchase others. I even contribute to them.

But if we are making suggestions of articles that fit the 'gap' between the commercial mainstream and the fine-scale market sectors it's no good to then to apply the commercial magazine requirements and replace words with pictures and edit them to only be appropriate for beginners and RTR enthusiasts.

    G.

If you go back to Phils original question it was for articles that would fit in a magazine that sat between MRJ and the Mainstream not for the Mainstream.

You were still having a dig.

  9. There seems to be little point in asking for example article suggestions if they are then just going to be pitched at a different level and the words replaced with photos.

Phil asked for examples of what would fit between the 'mainstream' (BRM, HM etc) and MRJ. You're just having a dig at what makes the mainstream popular and the most read but you don't like.

The usual answer is to submit articles you find interesting and you think others might to MRJ.

  10. OK, assuming I have at least one person still reading, even if it is only to learn how not to do it, here goes.

I have waited a while for this.

Looking forward to seeing how you get on, have works started/ongoing/finished yet?

    Edit....you've already answered my Q's

  11. No it doesn't. It has a promotion advertising two items being sold at £1 whose RRP are £2 and £2.99, i.e. they are being sold at either half or a third of their 'recommended' prices.

Yes it does, the poster to the left shows an item being sold for £2 in a £1 shop.

Although as Jim and TheQ post, this is usual pricing within them.

Going OT but whatever you find in a Poundland that looks cheap can usually be found elsewhere for slightly more £ but larger quantity, e.g. Poundland has 10 dishwasher tablet for £1, Wilco has the same but 30 for  £2.30
