  1. You obviously inhabit a different part of the hobby from me. Here the electrical switching is kept entirely separate from the mechanical operation of the points. Polarity switching of the crossings is via relays, and traction feed to the tracks beyond is controlled from the panel, via the interlocking.

The other members of the team would have questioned my sanity if I said that to isolate a locomotive you must set the points against it, instead of switching it off on the panel. In some cases there are several sets of points ganged together on the same lever. It would make a nightmare.

    Martin.

I'm guessing you went for Peco code 75 for that.......................... :mosking:

  2. 3 of us are going to Peterborough today, we're going to watch out as there's a rumour the fans of bladed turbine propulsion and BR ballast ploughs are going to clash with some choreographed dance moves.

We'll stick to the East side or It'll end in tears.

  3. On Thursday evening I was returning from Bedford and decided to use the A428 to Black cat, at 7.30pm I thought it was quiet but promptly joined the rear of a very slow moving 2 mile queue. about a mile from Black cat I saw a Police car coming down the middle with Blues and Two's so like everyone else moved over to let him through ( no hard shoulder but there are some nice big gully's and run off's).

After he passed me and about 5 cars in front he came up behind a small Peugot who just sat there, either half asleep or on the phone. There must have been 10-15 seconds before he shot to the right and the Police car went past, he then immediately cut back in behind the Police car and set off at speed behind him as the traffic parted to let them pass.

No idea how far he got but I did see various vehicles give him a near miss as they pulled back out.  I'm also rather hoping he got a ticket.

The favourite culprit to blame for selfish and aggressive behaviour is big German cars owners,  but the reality is there are twattish and selfish drivers everywhere.

  4. I need your advice please.

How many brownie points will I need to cash in for this?

My wife is out and I thought I'd make a start on what will be the bottom of the stairs to the loft.

Do you think she'll notice anything when she gets back?

Either lift a floorboard and sweep it under or throw a rug over it.

Scatter cushions work well in living room and bedrooms.

  5. My one experience was exceedingly bad.

I bought something from a guy in southern France. The parcel slowly toured the sorting depots of France, always veering off at the last moment when it got near a channel port, then disappeared into a depot just north of Paris, never to be seen again.

All attempts to get service from Hermes, by the sender, his wife, and myself, failed; the organisation hides itself behind layers of 'systems' that it's own staff in both countries seem baffled by.

In the end the sender reimbursed me, and found himself unable to recover anything from Hermes.

You learn something new, I didn't think they did outside of the UK.

  6. Only 9?  Pah!

    I'll top that next Tuesday with 21 of 200 x 75mm floor joists and 30 of 150 x 75mm rafters.  :beee:

In this case it is costed into the job though.  Perhaps I'd better have the smelling salts ready for the builder?

When I was figuring out which parts of this conversion I would do myself I estimated the floor joists would weigh around 40kg each.  For a moment I thought OK but then realised I'd have to carry all of them up two storeys and quickly put them on the list for the team of builders.

Mine are JJI's to get the span, they're 225 with 75x40 chords top and bottom.  9x2" would be more than sufficient but you can't get much above 5.4M, the silly thing is the existing are 3" x1.5". This is just the ceiling in the bedsit. The conversion has 3 new floors to go in so I'll probably hit £4k easily........I have a medical booked for shortly after delivery.

... and sparkies NEVER tidy up as they go along.....

That's because they're Prima Donnas, the only brushes they have are for either make up, or hair.

  7. Scaffolders......When Darwin wrote the 'Evolution of the Species' he was able to make the link between the ape and man because he'd had some scaffolding put up then some plumbing work done. Next time they come just look at their knuckles and look for the drag marks.

To be honest I wouldn't expect any sort of customer interaction with them, although it is a skilled job it is a hard Labour one and only a certain type of person can stick at it for years, and they generally don't have time for chit chat. Finishing at 4pm on a Friday for them is unheard of, as the pubs are open from midday now this is where most can be found.

So in the name of 'oneupmanship' I'll take your scaffold and raise you with 9.....yes 9 ceiling joists....admittedly 6.3M long...delivered today with a total cost of £527.99p.........it took an hour to bring me around full....£58 each...I need another lie down.

  8. Absolutely! Get in the queue . That's more than the PM is paid as a point of reference.

    Slightly off topic.

I don't like using the PM's salary as a good point of ref. Just as an example the Chief exec of Central Beds unitary authority gets 50% more than the PM.  Public sector pay has never been a good yardstick to measure by.

    Back on topic.

For the recent performance of the company I think it is a ridiculous salary, they're using debt to pay themselves.

  9. Brexit inevitably enters into this, purely because of the uncertainty it creates. You cannot ignore it. Who can predict if there will be tariffs or not when we come out, what will the currency effect be.who can predict that?

So what to do? I think Hornby have been very sensible in appointing a guy from the industry.

The only thing I'm not happy about is the re emergence of Simon Kohler, unless it's to give a smiling persona to the organisation. I think he presided over a mess in marketing Railroad, Main range 3 pole, 5 pole , complete mix up on what's on offer. Even announcing new ranges with ridiculous embargoes that were never adhered to. Some fairly uninspiring catalogues , and I think getting pricing points wrong.

What Tariffs ? Hornby is made in the Far East and already subject to Tariffs entering the EU.

You have rather contradicted yourself with your second sentence, they have appointed 2 people, both from the industry but then you go on to criticise SK.  I don't think you can blame SK for every ill that Hornby have suffered, he was at the time part of a company structure with decisions ultimately being made by others.

I think Hornby have the best chance they've had for a few years to improve and so long as they start making some pre-grouping GN stock I'll be happy................well you have to have hope...

  10. We can all use selective arguments to describe the past, present and predict the future, to support our own arguments, or even in a pseudo attempt to be "neutral", a tactic often shown shown not to be true.

I'd rather hope that isn't a dig at my comment. I genuinely have no preference either way, both sides of the argument have good and bad points and lied. I also see no point in having high blood pressure over a decision I can't change.

    Back on topic.

As a shareholder the price isn't gone through any earth shattering changes trading at 32p this morning. for the last 6(?) months it's been between 30-33p

  11. btw - re: "My job in the next day or so is to form the 'flaunch' within a live manhole with a vets at the head of the soil pipe........lovely.....".  I think I'd be donning full protective gear for that one!  Don't you have an apprentice who needs to learn how to do flaunching?  :jester:

It would still be me doing the work as his arm would be the one blocking the live pipe.

The bit I hate is hanging upside down to do the work then watching your phone fall out of your top pocket and into a 'soft' landing.

  12. You only need to vent one of the soil pipes direct to air on the one furthest from a manhole and could use an AAV on the other.

An alternative is to vent them through ridge vents and use a mix of flexible and rectangular ducting up the rafters. they aren't carrying anything but fumes, so there are plenty of products available. If you do use a mix then I'd tape the joints for good measure. The ridge vents have the advantage that there's always a small void of space below the ridge to make a joint between vent & pipe.

My job in the next day or so is to form the 'flaunch' within a live manhole with a vets at the head of the soil pipe........lovely.....

  13. Oh so slap me with a wet kipper, I was out by 2c, I guess the difference between a bottom of 1.23 and 2.10 vs 2.12 makes all the difference in the world when it comes to prices ?

Greece was “world leader” some 3000 years ago, comparing one of the worlds biggest economies of the 21st century, rapidly falling down the global league tables, to Greece is somewhat demeaning to Greece.

They still have the euro, it’s still at its strongest against the pound than its currency ever been has since its introduction, baring occasion even worse crashes where the pound fell.

Or instead why not look at Poland, constant growth, no recession, constant construction, high employment and increasing wages, increasing spending power, yes the government isn’t popular, but they come and go, at least there’s tends to be more stable even if they aren’t the most popular.

It's not the 2 cents difference that made me laugh but that you'd picked a currency high on one day in the last 3700 days to try and prove a point.

As for Greece having a strong currency, sure it has, while Germany artificially props it up. Sadly for Greece there are troubled times ahead as the debt that has been set aside for the future by the likes of Goldman Sachs will rear its head in 3-5 years time. This is the same Goldman Sachs that now has Manuel Barroso as its chairman who was the former EU President. He was of course found not to have breached the code of ethics but was found to have a poor lack of judgement in accepting the post after leaving the EU with his former staff issuing the petition to have him investigated.

As for Poland, their economy is being powered by 1 million plus Ukranian immigrants, with a high proportion working illegally. Thats not an ideal example to quote.

I've an open mind on Brexit as neither option is wonderful,  but you get what you vote for and this is what we've got so may as well get on with it.

As for the price of models, we haven't been paying anywhere near the same as others for years which is why the likes of Hornby have struggled.

  14. , I'm of the opinion that a pogo stick  would be safer...

Haven't seen those since we stopped Artexing....good for Stipple.

  15. 10 years is such a long time ago.

I paid £180 all inc, for flights to NYC for a weekend, spending $2.12 for £1.

I don’t think this country will ever recover from the crash of 2007, Brexit vote was a second helping, and i’m Sure there’s a third to come. The rest of the world is doing fine, just our lonely island sulking.

I went to the USA twice in 2007 and the £ never hit such a high rate against the $ the highest was $2.10 on one day in November (the 8th)

     https://www.poundsterlinglive.com/bank-of-england-spot/historical-spot-exchange-rates/gbp/GBP-to-USD-2007

At exchange I got between $1.95 and $2.00,  To get $2.12 the actual rate would have been nearly $2.18.

In 2000 we had to convert a lot of $ to £, luckily it was early in the year when it was around $1.60 when July rolled around it was down to $1.40.

As for your last sentence, load of tosh.

Just as an example I've come back from watching Rally Spain, I would hate to be unemployed there, a rate of 17% (nearly 40% if you're a young person) against ours at 5%. Get away from the big cities and see the poverty and near subsistance living. All of this in a region that wants independence which would mean leaving the European Union (and yes they understand that when you talk to those that want it)

All statistics can be manipulated to prove a point but we do have a habit of thinking the grass is always greener on the other side, when in reality it isn't, it's just the same.

  16. my current mobile is a mobiwire pictor, ive had it many months without serious issues, the only problem i have is that you cant change the alarm volume, it a little loud because it can wake up others in the house and not just me

although im in the demographic for fancy electronics, i couldnt care less, my current mobile is a pay as you go £10 from an EE shop, i only chose it because it was the first mobile shop i saw that day when i went to buy a new mobile, it has a camera and internet but ive never used them at all, if i want to take a photo, ive got a digital camera and if i want to go the internet, we've got a computer, i tend to use the radio and the calculator more than the calls and texts

    Why not buy an alarm.

Not picking on you but this is a classic, we say we only want a phone, but find the other things it can do and use them.

In the defence of 'Smartphones' I'll say this. To me they are a tool (not a lifestyle) and if you use them they can enhance your life. As an example I've just come back from watching WRC (Rally) in Spain, out on the dusty stages where I didn't want to get the camera out, I used the phone (4 year old iPhone 5) and on the PC the results are the same for both pictures and video. Even in remote parts of Spain we had 4G and were able to see the times and results as they happened rather than having to wait until the end of the day.  I was able to read RMweb in the evenings as well as email and use it as an alarm. I'm not a slave to it but it can be useful.
