  3. There are areas of the UK now where there is no way I would drive without well positioned, working, front and rear dashcams. Birmingham, Bradford, Burnley, Leicester, Blackburn and Luton are right up there... As well as terrible drivers, there's the 'cash for crash' bandits still active I drive thousands of miles when home on leave, so it's not that I'm a nervous driver - 30 years next year since I passed my IAM Test, and now 41 years since passing my Driving Test...
  4. Absolutely so. What got me, though, was the outrage uttered, by some who should know better, that Carnival/Costa didn't support their man? Why should they, when he deliberately ignored their Company policy regarding, inter alia, minimum distances offshore.
  5. Most of my locomotives are built using the Sharman Flexichas system, but some recent etched kits I have built are designed with CSBs, so I have followed the destructions provided...
  6. I can't remember if I have put up this link before http://heiwaco.tripod.com/index.html I may well have done so, but someone has just told me that his Costa Concordia rant http://heiwaco.tripod.com/news8.htm has been updated. Seemingly the hull was towed out to sea and sunk! This, if course, is the bloke who said that the ship could not be recovered to upright by parbuckling, and indeed he waxed lyrical about how this procedure was doomed to fail - how wrong he was... There are some great wibbles there. Enjoy! Remember, they walk amongst us...
  7. Surely that's when you get back your car, your woman and your dog?
  8. Wasn't this the loco that was reportedly saved because of Newcastle Brown Ale - or rather that lots of it had been supplied to the crew of the diesel scheduled to take it to locomotive Valhalla at Blyth, the night before the move, rendering them unable to report for duty? That delay gave NELPG time to sort the purchase out? True or not, it's a great tale ISTR that the late Frank Atkinson was involved in subterfuge too, saving J21 65033. Incidentally, I see from the J21 Farceberk page that official permission to restore that old lady was finally given yesterday. Happy days
  9. Rats! I'm still on my ship, and will miss it
  10. Is about to sail from Karsto, near Stavanger, bound for Antwerp. There's a 4 to 5 metre high swell waiting outside. Everything is securely lashed down - I hope...

Sounds like that video on the Model Railway Partwork thread. Don't watch on a full stomach...

  11. Many platforms on the Cumbrian Coast line are still low - small wooden steps are available if required, from memory.
  12. Some 15 years ago, I was a regular visitor to Puerto Limon, discharging LPG. (I served on 3 ships that were on charter to Carib LPG, serving several Caribbean destinations from our regular loading port in Trinidad). That was round about the time that the banana trade from there was moving to containers, rather than the traditional reefer ships. Back then there wasn't much *SLF activity there... *SLF - self-loading freight... AKA passengers
  13. I know what you mean about Comic-Con. My daughter is involved with such things, so regularly get to see photos of various events...
  14. Zuckerberg refused to talk, but it seems that someone found a way in... https://forums.theregister.co.uk/forum/1/2018/11/26/facebook_dcms_document_cache_seized/ Popcorn, anyone?
  15. I for one regretted the loss of the ECM range. They could be fitted with a small adaptor plate which made them pretty much a straight mechanical swap for XO4/ Romford Bulldog motors. OK, you then had to solder the power leads, but that too was simple enough. Their era was indeed late 70s/early 80s. I wouldn't be in a hurry to upgrade if the ones you have are still working
  16. That approach - the commanding officer being in a place of safety - is apparently an Italian technique...
  17. Ours is fine - but the area in general is not infested with Guardianistas. It there a link?
  18. Peter's A8 chassis kit has two versions - one for OO and one for EM/P4. As the main assembly folds up from one piece, this makes sense. I'm thinking that this is also true for the C15?
  19. Haymarket, like Top Shed, was full of Gresley devotees, according to Norman McKillop, so it is quite possible that attitudes towards ET's work were never going to be favourable.
