  1. One of the big appeals of the Hull - Scarborough line was that a lot of the signalling was fairly antiquated so you still had a few of the NER Gate Board signals in use though they were too remote for me to get a photo. Many of the crossings still retained their NER enamel nameplates, sometimes painted over as on Thwaite Gates gatebox at Cottingham. Thwaite Gates Signalbox 13.1.1979 par PinzaC55, on ipernity
  2. I think it may have been Carnaby where the bobby pointed out that the date of opening of the box was scratched on the window glass ? Bedale has, and Leyburn had, this also.
  3. You're welcome! On April Fools Day 1978 I made my way on foot - I didn't have a car - to Carnaby station. It had only been closed 8 years but looked very disused. I spent some time in the box chatting to the bobby but didn't take a photo. The rest of the office was pure NER.
  4. I missed this thread as I haven't been visiting this site much lately but here are a couple of my 1978 photos of Brid station for what they are worth. The place was an oasis of orange enamel signs and the only remaining "penny in the slot" Stephenson's Rocket I was aware of at that time. 5. On a dreary day in 1977. Note the intact wooden nameboard as this line was demolished in a very halfhearted fashion. 6. Yes I hadn't noticed that ! It's interesting to note that the tall thin chimney stack on the right has acquired a chimney pot since 1978 and that the lamp posts and bollards are the same. Here's the top 40 for may 1978 with Boney M at the top of the charts http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/uk-top-40-singles-chart/19780521/750140/
  7. Pocklington station exterior in May 1978. It shared the distinction with Malton of having the bus station just over the other side of the road - a model of transport integration - but that didn't save it. 8. You're welcome ! Of course in those days the line could easily have been relaid but as I am sure you know the idiotic councils have approved housing at Stamford Bridge. 10. For a siding which hasn't been used for 7 years it seems remarkably free of weeds ?
  11. You might say the authorities took Umbrage ? "groan" I know
  12. Great stuff. If more of these were installed we might be able to end the demonisation of level crossings as being "dangerous".
  13. Well maybe it is time they did ? If they did that and had a "Camera" sign at the crossings it may make these idiots think twice ?
  14. There is something I am particularly curious about - it seems like an obvious question. Since in this case the video evidence seems to have been enough to convict her and these crossings are monitored by CCTV why can't recordings of all these type of incidents be forwarded to the BTP ?

  17. Further down the line from Burdale was Sledmere & Fimber station, once the busiest on the line. When the line closed it was simply boarded up and British Rail wanted so much for it that it gradually became derelict. In 1978 it was still repairable but the local authority decided to demolish it and erect a timber cabin selling tea and snacks rather than the more sensible idea of restoring the station ! Sledmere & Fimber {3} 25,2.78 par PinzaC55, on ipernity Visible in the distance is the grain warehouse. This was built in 1860 on a 100 year lease, and when the line closed it was still a thriving concern having been repainted and modernised recently. 2 years later the lease expired and British Rail told the tenants, who wished to buy it , that they would have to buy the whole site including the station and Fimber Road gatehouse. So they had to move elsewhere and the warehouse gradually fell derelict until by 1978 it was a dangerous roofless ruin. Another own goal for BR. 20. It was partly that BR was increasing use of the goods line thus it would be difficult to fit Peak Rail trains in, plus the fact that Peak Rail were short of money at the time and were offered a substantial amount of money for most of the Buxton site and it made sense to concentrate operations on Darley Dale - Matlock rather than having two sites. Unfortunately by this time they had rebuilt the bridge at Buxton which was in effect wasted money. It does seem odd that they have left a perfectly good water crane there. 21. Of all the places I ever visited the most evocative was Burdale station on the old Malton & Driffield railway. The station closed to passengers -if any- in 1950 followed by the line closure in 1958. The stationmaster left to find work elsewhere and the building stood empty and increasingly derelict until by the time of my third visit in 1978 it was a ghastly ruin. It has been demolished now but the Yorkshire Wolds Railway are reopening the line further down at Sledmere & Fimber http://www.yorkshirewoldsrailway.org.uk/ Burdale Station [5] 20.5.78 par PinzaC55, on ipernity Burdale Station 20.5.78 par PinzaC55, on ipernity

  23. A couple of weeks ago I walked from York to Sand Hutton and found this sad Vanfit body near the course of the Sand Hutton Light Railway. It couldn't have been anything to do with the SHLR as that was narrow gauge and closed in 1930.It is simply sitting in a wood near the road with no obvious reason why it should be there.
