  1. Greetings from a sunny Northumberland. What's this snow I hear mentioned elsewhere on RMWeb today? The only white here is the hard frost. The first photos for today are from the Talyllyn, back in late August 1969. 2. Something a bit different today. In July 1983 Dad visited Birchenwood Coke Ovens, Kidsgrove in Stafordshire. The works had just closed. I was there, along with other people from the preservation project at Sewstern and Market Overton. The purpose of the visit was to see what, if anything, was worth buying for preservation. I don't know the outcome of this particular visit but I believe a Peckett and a Bagnall were preserved. The photos are not very good as the locos were in the shed, there was hardly any light. Here is a link to some views by another photographer of some of the locos outside: https://www.28dayslater.co.uk/birchenwood-gas-coke-railway-kidsgrove-1970-3.t55935 Kidsgrove Birchenwood Peckett July 73 J3250 Kidsgrove Birchenwood July 73 J3251 Kidsgrove Birchenwood Avonside July 73 J3253 Kidsgrove Birchenwood coke ovens Bagnall 0-4-0ST and 0-6-0T July 73 C 1289 Kidsgrove Birchenwood coke ovens Peckett and Bagnall July 73 C1290 David

  6. Thanks very much for the photo and maps. Even though I am a biologist I never fail to be surprised at how quickly trees can grow. David
  7. My only regular commute was around 1957/8 when I travelled on the Great Central into Nottingham Victoria from East Leake on the way to and from school. Usually the loco was a B1, the stock was a mix of Gresley and Mark 1s, all corridor. The Gresleys were more comfortable. Once or twice the loco was a V2, I think I was once hauled by an ex LMS Class 5. From time to time in the morning the train would approach the platform very quickly and stop beyond the station, followed by a quick reverse into the platform. We were usually back on time by Nottingham. David

  10. I've just had a look at Google Earth, I see what you mean. It is still remarkably similar. It's a very long time since I stopped the car there to have a look. David
  11. Yes, it was 1967, 16th July to be exact. 60019 was working an RCTS special from Leeds to Glasgow. Edit After a number of attempts the link now works. It is on the Six Bells Junction site at: which gives more details. https://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/60s/670716ag.html But if you look at the railtour files and select 1967 you will find it. Why is the internet never simple? David

  21. I think these are the only two photos I have of the type, both in the later dark blue. I didn't start taking photos in the north east until 1980. I think they have both in this thread, but a long time ago so am copying them here. 22. I've no idea why I had it down as a K1 and not as the K4 3442 The Great Marquess, I really should have known better, especially as at one time Dad had known Viscount Garnock who then owned the loco. David
  23. As far as I know, yes. There is a signal on the upside, not visible in the photo, K544 if that helps with the exact location. David
