  1. Mainly Southern today. Plus one of the trackbed (the last photo today) of the Bideford Westward Ho! and Appledore Railway. The house in the photo is still visible on Google Earth, it is at the western end of Westward Ho!. The trackbed in this photo now forms a part of the southwest coastal path. 2. More photos of Olten today. When I was on holiday in Switzerland and travelling around by train, using a Swiss Pass I used to plan my journeys before leaving home. For each day I wrote out the planned itinerary on record cards, together with a note of how to amend them if anything went wrong. I also carried the timetable book with me (it was quite small then). In 1988 I think I did every journey as planned. I normally tried to allow at least an hour at each place I visited. 3. The family lived in and around Nottingham until 1965, Mum and Dad moved back to the east of Nottingham in 1968 and stayed for some years, so Ratcliffe on Soar was not far away, was good for parking and provided a number of nice views. David
  4. I wondered whether it had been carrying bagged cement (or other white powder) and some had burst when loading/unloading. David
  5. You could be right but when I enlarge to original scan the leading wagon is mainly grey (and rust) so it ought to be unfitted. But you never know. I wish I could remember the smell and exactly what I saw but it's a bit too long ago now. I did write hot boxes on the back of my b/w print I made from my shot of the same train. David

  7. Travelling from Ulleskelf towards York you pass Chaloners Whin Junction (or at least you did when Dad and i photographed in the area). At Chaloners Whin Junction the ECML diverged, heading south to Selby and beyond while the line from York to Leeds went straight on. Now the junction has long gone, closed when the diversion opened to avoid the Selby coalfield. The images are from 1966 and 1967. 9. It is a bit obvious that it's a 45 isn't it. I think I need a new proof reader - it will have been a slip of my typing finger again. The marks on the image are scratches. I generally try not to remove them if they are on part of a train so as not to introduce anything else odd - ever since I managed to moved some roof vents on an image I put of flickr. David

  15. Thanks for asking that RANGERS, when I captioned the photo I had to check it as I thought it had closed around then too. However, It really was 1968, in 1966 Dad, who took the photo was living in Harrogate. I was also there that day and took some black and white photos so again it had to be 1968 - in 1966 I too was in Harrogate and still at school. The dates for the line are: Opened to goods 1 Nov 1879 Opened to passengers 2 Feb 1880 Closed to passengers 1 May 1967 Line closed as a through route 4th Nov 1968 After that the down line was "taken out of use for traffic purposes", one engine in steam working Melton Junction to Old Dalby on up line, remainder of up line to Edwalton closed completely. 18th December 1968 From 30th August 1970 in use for Research Department. 17. Photos of Brunnen today, between ArthGoldau and Erstfeld. The Ae8/14 is preserved by SBB, at the time their preserved locos were used about one day a week on service trains to keep them operational. Modellers may find the building photos useful. 21. Phil, I think you are probably right. I can't quite read the number on the scan, it was not clear on the slide either, Dad could easily have written down one digit incorrectly, I have done often enough. David
  22. I didn't get a photo of that train, it was hidden buy one coming the other way when it left, so I don't know where it was going to/from. David
  23. I've had a look at my black and white photo of the same loco and train, the cabside is much too dirty to read the number. I don't think the numbers on the smokebox door are the loco number. It would have been interesting to know which loco it was. David
  24. In 1966 there was a mix of steam and diesel workings to be seen on the WCMl between Preston and Lancaster. These photos are from two visits to Barton and Broughton on one day in September 1966, in the morning and afternoon. I was still at school then about to start the second year of A levels, we must have been having a day out, perhaps the last Saturday of the school summer holidays. These are Dad's photos, I was taking black and white photos then.
