  7. The only trouble with the flickr comments is that for some reason flickr notifications don't always work. When they do work (and that one did as it happens) I then have to remember to alter the captions in my catalogues and on the digital image files, including the backup copies on external hard drives. Sometimes (often) things get missed..... David
  8. Some photos taken between Scunthorpe and the Tent today. Once again they are Dad's and I wasn't there so I don't know much about them. 14. Guess what - I still have lots of photos taken at Zell am See, so here are a few more. As you will have realised by now Dad spent as much of his holiday as he could taking railway photos. 20. I don't do much scanning now as I think I have done all the family negatives and slides. Some of the older ones (mainly family photos pre war) were of various odd formats. For those I just used my flatbed scanner. The current one is an Epson 4490 which I've had for quite a few years. It has slide/negative holders, I have also been known to cut my own masks to fit odd negative sizes. I find the results it produces are fine for what I need - I rarely print anything, I just connect my laptop to the TV to look at my photos at home. However publishers have had no problems using photos scanned with it in books. I think Epson still do some higher end scanners which will do all sorts of negatives including glass plates, but I haven't kept up to date recently. Almost all my 35mm images were done with a Minolta Dimage scanner which I bought in 2003, it has done over 100,000 scans and still works but I use different software now (Vuescan) as the Minolta software doesn't work with newer versions of Windows. If I just need a scan of one of my 1960s prints I often use my current printer/scanner, a cheap Canon MG32350 which produces acceptable results and saves getting the Epson out. As for where to go in a Tardis? I would like to see Carlisle around 1908-12, also York around the same time. After that - anywhere with a railway. But could I take a modern digital camera or would I have to have a camera of the period I was visiting? David
  21. Mum and Dad stayed in Zell am See for about a week as a part of a holiday they had in Austria in 1989. David
  22. I'd like to thank everyone for all the Likes, Thanks etc and the very kind comments you have made about the photos. Time for another visit to Scotland now, once again loking at the WCMl. We are at Beattock (at and near the station site) and Lockerbie on a very dull and dismal day in March 1981. Perhaps it is time to get my Tardis set up so it only visits places when the sun shines. 23. Today's "extra photos" show a coal working. The train is an empty set working to Potland Burn loading site, in Northumberland. The train is first seen approaching Ulgham Lane crossing, just south of Butterwell Junction where the train leaves the ECMl to proceed along a single track line past Linton to Potland Burn. The loco is 66176. I had plenty of time to drive from one location to the next. 25. A few days ago I wrote a little about the number of photos used on this thread and my European thread. As many of you know all the railway photos taken by myself and Dad are catalogued. They are in hard back notebooks (mainly A4) and I've just realised they take up about 3' 6" of shelf space. Then there are the indexes by location and loco type. I also use at least 8 railway atlases of varying scales and periods, as well as road atlases and OS maps. Then there are the sectional appendices for the London Midland, Eastern, North Eastern and Scottish Regions, together with other useful bits of BR information. I also have a number of working timetables but hardly any of them cover the period when BR 4 character headcodes were in use. For the preserved photos I use at least seven different editions of Railways Restored and its predecessors, dating back to 1974. For BR and privatised stock I have quite a large collection of books I use. So why do so many of my captions need amending? Simple answer - I am human. Dad and I didn't always write down the correct location (or date for that matter). As for identifying dmu and emu classes - that can be very difficult, but I don't know why. So please keep the corrections coming. The more photos I post the more sympathy I have for those who try to write captions for photos in books. It is so easy to get them wrong. Edit - Having written that I managed to get the train captioned incorrectly in the first of today's photos. Now (at last) the rest of today's photos. Once again we visit Church Lane crossing on the Great Eastern, with one photo taken near Kelvedon.
