  1. I didn't get a photo of that train, it was hidden buy one coming the other way when it left, so I don't know where it was going to/from. David
  2. I've had a look at my black and white photo of the same loco and train, the cabside is much too dirty to read the number. I don't think the numbers on the smokebox door are the loco number. It would have been interesting to know which loco it was. David
  3. In 1966 there was a mix of steam and diesel workings to be seen on the WCMl between Preston and Lancaster. These photos are from two visits to Barton and Broughton on one day in September 1966, in the morning and afternoon. I was still at school then about to start the second year of A levels, we must have been having a day out, perhaps the last Saturday of the school summer holidays. These are Dad's photos, I was taking black and white photos then. 5. Thanks very much for pointing that out. I should have been able to get it right, because I travelled to Birchenwood to see the locos when they were inspected before they were bought. David
  6. Some more from the Blyth and Tyne this afternoon. They were taken between Seaton Delaval and South Newsham, which was just to the south of Newsham, the junction for Blyth. 8. I don't know if it is a feature of the current timetable but there were a number of trains in the 1988 (and after) timetable which did that. I suspect they were really a typically Swiss complex stock working which "just happened" to form a useful through train - if you were not in a hurry. I've just had a look at the 1997/8 timetable (the only one I've kept over the years). In it the train from Winterthur to Romanshorn, leaving at 38 min past each hour is shown as originating on even hours (from Winterthur) from Geneve Aeroport, odd hours from either Lausanne or Brig. Example: Train IR1515 dep Brig 06.29 Lausanne 08.07 Neuchatel 08.59 Biel/Bienne 9.21 Zurich arr 10.54 dep 11.10 Winterthur 11.36 Frauenfeld 11.49/50 Weinfelden 12.02/03 Amriswil 12.15 Romanshorn 12.22 David

  10. Montreux, in the west of Switzerland by Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) today. It was one of the duller days that summer. 11. Photos taken around Benton Quarry Junction today. When I took these photos there was still a south to west facing connection from the ECML onto the Metro line for the freight traffic to Rowntrees at Fawdon. The junction with the Blyth and Tyne to to North Blyth, Cambois, Lynemouth and Morpeth is still in use. At that time the Metro system was only partly completed so trains only ran as far as Haymarket in Newcastle. Benton Quarry Junction Class 47 down Aug 81 C5533 The Blyth and Tyne is seen going off to the left. 13. Photos this afternoon taken on visits to Market Overton between 1972 and 1975. A quick reminder that Market Overton was at the end of an ex British Steel line, accessed at that time from the High Dyke branch and past Sewstern. At this time John Gretton and Bill McAlpine kept locos and stock there. When these photos were taken part of Dad's job was to manage the ex British Steel lines in the Sewstern area, along with the works there, so he and I often visited Market Overton. 14. As far as I remember the Harrogate buses were United. Though I usually walked or got lifts from friends or Mum and Dad. David
  15. DaveF was one of the names I was called at work as we had several Daves and Davids. The F comes from my surname.
  16. I have a distinct lack of photos of hydraulics. At the moment I am working on the last of the 1960s and early 70s photos and am hoping to find enough diesel hydraulic photos to make up one or two more days postings. Neither Dad nor I visited the GWR area very often though. David
  17. Harrogate in the mid 60s today. The photos are of the late morning train to King's Cross, which had more coaches added at Leeds. It was the last regularly steam hauled passenger working from Harrogate, leaving around 11.40 a.m., varying slightly over the years. The images are scanned from half frame slides so are not as crisp as some. 19. She was shopping at the time. I wonder why it didn't last? David
  20. It was probably taken in the late morning, but it was a very long time ago, so I'm not sure. If anyone would like to work out the time from the shadows...... For ten years I didn't even notice the train in the background, it only got moved from the "general" slide boxes to the railway boxes in August 1981, when it was re catalogued. David
  21. I was happily typing a note about today's photos all being Great Western when I remembered that one isn't. So today we have four on the Great western and one on the Southern (LSWR to be exact). The first one is the Southern photo. Heddon Mill is on the LSWR line between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe. It's one of Dad's, I have a black and white photo of the same train. It was taken while we were on holiday staying with friends who owned the old cinema in Appledore and had converted part of it into a holiday home. Heddon Mill Swindon dmu Ilfracombe to Exeter Aug 66 J582 Next we have three photos, also of Dad's, taken at Fenny Compton on the GWR line between Banbury and Leamington Spa. Fenny Compton Class 47 Birmingham to Paddington July 71 J2723 Fenny Compton Class 47 1720 up Ford cars July 71 J2724 Fenny Compton Class 46 173 up coal July 71 J2725 Lastly one taken looking across the water to Dawlish Warren, taken from Exmouth. 22. Still in Switzerland with a visit to Koblenz this afternoon which can now be reached by train from Eglisau to the west and Turgi to the south. When I was there you could also travel from Stein Säckingen, but that line is now out of use between Laufenberg and Koblenz. There is also the line across the Rhein to Waldshut, in Germany. This explains the DB railbus in one of the photos. 23. Phil, It was indeed the unpredictabilty of what might turn up that made it so enjoyable. When I go out taking photos now I usually know in advance what I will see, I actually take fewer railway photos now even though (in theory) I have more time to go out now I'm retired. David
  24. Thanks Paul. I realised it was wrong after I posted it, so I removed the number from the text beneath the image but RMWeb doesn't allow editing of the original uploaded image title.. David
  25. Before I post today's photos can I once again thank those who point out my captioning errors. If the location or date look odd they are probably my typing errors, as are most loco classes (except dmus). Now and then I type up for down and vice versa. If all the images I post have file numbers which are close to each other then the date should the same for each of them, or at least very near. Train workings are another matter, to those who regularly add information of train identifications and timings thanks very much. Younger followers of this thread may not always realise just how little information was available to most enthusiasts when these photos were taken. Obviously in pre-internet days there was no Real Time Trains site. Working timetables were almost impossible to obtain, especially current ones so working out which train was which was often difficult. It was even hard to obtain details of most special workings. As you know, most of Dad's and my photos were taken by the lineside, not at stations. We usually had a copy of the latest public timetable and tried to work out the likely passing times for our location from the station times. Of course if you got it wrong, or trains were out of sequence then you noted everything incorrectly. Even headcode details were hard to obtain, Ian Allan did do an abc of 4 figure headcodes, but in practice it only gave the first two digits - train class and destination area. In other words you generally went out, found a nice location and took photos of whatever turned up. Now for the photos. Today we have photos from visits to Pilmoor in four different years. Pilmoor Class 47 D1577 14.00 Kings X to Edinburgh Sept 67 J1130 Pilmoor Class 108 up pass July70 C231 are the centre coaches Class 101?
