Emmenbrucke today, on the line from Lzern to Olten. It is the junction for the Seetalbahn. The sun doesn't always shine in Switzerland in August. Paul, Many thanks for the dmu identification - I am always wary of putting class numbers on 116s and others as they look so similar to me - I never really saw enough to get used to them. The 312s were built from 1975 to 1978, the 313s from 1976 to 1977. (Platform 5 Locos and coaching stock book). So I think the 312s would have been in service first. David

I hope that I've got "up" and "down" the right was round today. The photos for today are from a set I took at Brookman's Park on a very dull day in March 1977, so I think it was quite mild - it must have been as I was there for some time. When you travel from Filisur to Davos Platz and then on to Klosters on the Rhätische Bahn you pass through several stations on the way with Davos as a part of their name. Today's photos show some of these stations, with the images taken from the train. I always liked windows which open fully on trains, they made photography much easier. Many thanks. for pointing that out. I have amended the caption to Hawthorn Leslie. It is in fact Hawthorn Leslie 3793, built in 1953. It was bought from the CEGB, having worked at Newport Gwent. At the time of the photo it was owned by Steam Enterprises Limited who stored their locos at Carnforth. It's surprising the details I can find when I actually get out my reference books - in this case a copy of the ARPS year book "Steam '77". David

Photos from the Seetalbahn today. It runs from Emmenbrücke to Lenzburg. At Emmenbrücke trains from Luzern had to reverse at this time to gain access to the Seetalbahn, which ran alongside the road for much of its length. The remainimng photos were taken at Hochdorf, part of the way along the line. It's about time we had another look at Steamtown, Carnforth in the 1970s. For some reason the weather was usually dull when I went there. From time to time I tried taking photos of locos in the shed, with somewhat mixed results. I didn't record the train details but it was en route for Basel before heading for Russia, the photo was taken at 16.32 and it was a Saturday. Unfortunately I no longer have the 1988 SBB timetable book. David

It was closed then. I thought I could quote the dates but couldn't remember them so I have looked up the information in John Gough's "The Midland Railway - A Chronology". He states: Butterley station opened to passengers and goods traffic 1st May 1875 Name changed to Butterley for Ripley and Swanwick 29th July 1935 Closed to passengers 16th June 1947 Closed to goods 2nd November 1964 Excursion trains continued to serve Butterley until after 1964 Station signal box closed 7th March 1965 Crich Junction to Swanwick sidings (through Butterley) closed 23rd December 1968 Swanwick sidings to Ironville Junction closed 4th October 1971. It was then used by Adamson Butterley Ltd until 11th June 1979. Midland Railway Trust re opened Hammersmith to Swanwick sidings 22nd August 1981 MRT reopened Swanwick sidings to Codnor Park junction 29th May 1982. The history of the line is quite complicated. Quite often when travelling around Switzerland I would find myself either passing through, or changing trains, at Olten. Several times I spent an hour or two there taking photos. Switzerland is not all about mountains, as those of you who do not know the country will find out as this thread progresses.
