  1. Along the Great Central Railway line to Cleethorpes today. At one time, before these photos were taken, I knew the area quite well, especially round Grimsby Docks as we sometimes moored Dad's boat there in the 1960s. In those days there was still a lot of timber traffic with lines of timber wagons in the sidings around Alexandra Dock. 2. A visit to Reichenau-Tamins station on the Rhätische Bahn in Switzerland today. Just to the west of the station is the junction for the lines to Disentis and St Moritz. Heading east you come to Chur. The Vorder Rhein and Hinter Rhein meet here to form the River Rhein (Rhine). 3. Today's photos could be described as being not too far from Harrogate, which was where Dad was living when he took these photos. I have (or had) black and white versions of most of them, I was probably standing a few yards from him. The two on the Ripon line at South Stainley are the only two photos I have of the line between Ripon and Harrogate while it was still open, the S&C and the ECML were both much more interesting to photograph. 4. Another visit to Denmark today. A brief look at Odense where the Danish National Railway Museum is situated, together with a couple from Ribe. I'm sure you all know Denmark well enough not to need any further details of the locations - but they are on Google Earth! As usual I find it to believe that it is over twenty years since I went to Odense. 5. Electrics around Standon Bridge and Nuneaton this evening - and one photo of a bridge. They are all in the days of BR blue with the ones at Standon Bridge being taken in the early part of the long hot dry summer of 1976. The three Nuneaton photos are Dad's, I've no idea why he went there, but he never went back to take any more photos there. The first photo has some nice pointwork. 9. I've just checked my notes, the 114 (C4454) was taken in April 79. David
  10. Austria again this evening, this time on a (very) wet day in Salzburg. I travelled there on the train for the day from Zell am See. In places the track was under water, even the rails were covered. Perhaps electricity in Austria is less dangerous than Britain - I was on a train hauled by (I think) a Class 1044 electric. 12. It's a long time since I posted anything in this thread - photography and 0 gauge have been occupying my time. A recent re-organisation of the "hidden sidings" has led to my finding space for two more goods trains. A supply of wagons was no problem, I have lots of them, but I realised I had no spare brake vans (and two already in use are not very good models). So I need some more. A hunt in my boxes of unbuilt kits found a Parkside kit for a very late period Midland Railway brake (very like the Bachmann early LMS one released recently). That has been built and awaits painting once the second one is built. The second kit is a Jidenco etched brass kit for a Midland 6 wheel 15Ton or 20Ton brake van. I think I've had the kit for around 20 years, the first job was to make sure the parts were all there, including the castings and to find some wheels. The wheels will be the current Hornby type. All the etches and castings seem to be there. Before anyone says that Jidenco kits are (almost) impossible to build I should mention that I built the same brake van type over thirty years ago, I remember the hard bits very well indeed! The worst bit back then was bending up the solebars into the correct "U" shape from pieces of brass with no half etched lines, as the bolt/rivet detail is etched on the surface so I assume half etched bend lines could not be done as well. I may use my "hold and fold" or I may see if I have some suitable brass channel and add the etches as an overlay. This afternoon I cleaned up the brass with some "Safeway Cream Cleaner" - it's very old but still cleans well, it's just abrasive enough. A few small bits fell off the etch but as brass is quite heavy the bits remained in the bowl after I gently tipped the water away - a bit like gold panning really. I'm not sure how long it will take, it will be fitted in between other modelling, photographic and gardening things. All being well I will take some photos as it progresses and post them here. David PS The brass is a lot cleaner than it looks in the photo. Davd

  14. I think almost all colour films of the 60s (and even into the 80s) can give problems. Agfa goes green, Fuji loses a lot of the green, it goes an olive colour, Ektachrome can have an overall green tinge and so on. You also have the problem of fading caused by exposure to any light while they are stored. Many years ago I read an article in Amateur Photographer which said that there is a measurable shift in colour balance on a slide after being in a projector for only thirty seconds! David
  15. I've had a look at the original scan, it is a container ship. As for the clinker lifeboat the Portsmouth to Ryde ferries in use then, Brading, Southsea and Shanklin, were built in 1948 by Denny's in Dumbarton and presumably had never been updated much. David

  18. Dad took these photos, he was using Agfa film at the time (ASA 50). Over time the blues tend toi turn greener which makes scanning and correcting them quite a big task! Some I have more success with than others. The French photos are not amongst Dad's best, for some reason the lens was not always stopping down correctly so there is some over exposure - but only on random images. When he got home and the slides came back from Agfa he bought a new camera! David
  19. Yes it was mine. It generally worked well and din't rust - but I only kept it for about 18 monhs. The only problem was that it once boiled for no apparent reason but never did it again. I replaced it with a Citroen BX - a much nicer car. David
  20. The train is on the WCML north of the station, approaching the site of Caldew Junction. Just out of shot to the right is the site of the Caledonian Railway goods yard, the road is now called Viaduct Estate Road. The freight avoiding line was the far side of the Caledonian Goods line, it joined the main line just north of this photo at Caldew Junction. I'm afraid I've forgotten what the plaque is for. David
  21. I have to admit that when I posted the photo this evening I did wonder whether the second loco might be a Class 87, but my notes said 86. What do others think? David
