  3. Another visit to the line from Maningtree to Harwich this evening. I find it hard to believe that I took these images nearly 40 years ago. 6. There are some in this thread and some more to come - but I have many thousands of photos to work through if we don't all get bored with them. If you go to my flickr site and look in albums (sets) you will find some. https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidwf2009/sets Note - There are three pages of albums (sets. David
  7. If anyone has a timetable with these trains in I'd love to know what they are. C1146. I probably took this around lunchtime on a weekday, I very occasionally got chance to slip out from work for a short while. J054 at Bardney. This may have been taken at a weekend or else it was during half term. It was taken from Dad's boat on the River Witham if anyone wonders how he took it without swimming!. David
  8. Switzerland once more this evening. As you travel east along Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) from Lausanne you will come to Cully, from where a metre gauge line, the Chemin de fer Electriques Veyveysans (CEV) climbs up to Blonay and then on to Les Pleaides. Above Blonay it uses a rack. From Blonay a branch line leads to Chamby. This is now worked by the Blonay Chamby Preservation Society, which also has a museum, Musee de Chaulin part way along the line, also used as the loco depot. Meanwhile the MOB (Montreux Oberland Bernois) climbs from Montreux through Fontanivent and on to Chamby before continuing on its way to Gstaad and Zweisimmen. The line crosses the motorway near Chernex (Autobahn or Autoroute depending on whether you are a German or French speaking Swiss) - the area's main language is French. 11. Yes, it is in LMS livery. I was surprised how well the slide scanned as the original was in poor condition. It's one of Dad's photos, I've just had a look and he only took the one photo there - most remiss of him! David
  12. The Swiss are quite good at standardising things, when they want to. The various designs of standard gauge coach used by SBB are also used by most of the private standard gauge railways. They also like to buy things made in Switzerland when they can. David
  13. Another part of north east Switzerland today, the village of Urnasch, about halfway between Herisau and Appenzell on the Appenzeller Bahn. You will remember that this is metre gauge from previous photos. 15. A few from the Tanfield railway, not far from Gateshead, yesterday (4th May). As usual the engine shed was open to look round, much of the yard at Marley Hill is also accessible. Some of the coaches have verandahs which are useful for obtaining photos as the train is going along. There will probably be some more photos over the coming days. 16. Switzerland again, this time we are at Buchs, between St Margarethen and Sargans in the north east, next to the Rhein. It is also the junction for Austria and the Arlberg route. Trains to and from Austria change from SBB to OBB traction and vice versa at Buchs. 17. I'm back home now from a very enjoyable day at the Tanfield Railway - there will probably be some photos of it in the next few days. 18. Yes, I believe it is, placed there to publicise the museum - Gloddfa Ganol I think at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Thanks very much, I've often wondered what the train looked like from the lineside. David
  19. Switzerland today, at Altstatten where there are 2 stations, one for the SBB and the other for the Appenzeller Bahnen. A metre gauge tram line used to connect them but was closed a long time ago. Altstatten lies near the Rhein, between St Margarethen and Buchs in the north east of the country. 21. I'm just going to watch the "Tour de Yorkshire" on TV so I thought I'd better post today's preserved railway photos first. The photos of the Ffestiniog were all taken on a very wet day when I had gone on an excursion from the north east, I'd joined the train at Cramlington and we had travelled to Blaenau Ffestiniog, then we were to have a round trip on the Ffestiniog before returning home. On the day D200 was hauling a trip from Leeds (I think) and broke down, so was very late, we were behind it on the way to Blaenau. They went on the train before us to Porthmadog. However, both train loads needed to go back to Blaenau on the same Ffestiniog train, so some hurried shunting was done resulting in a 17 coach train being taken to Blaenau by Linda and Blanche double heading. I believe that according to a piece in the Railway Magazine this was thought to be the longest train the FR had run in preservation days. 22. Thanks again, I've added the information to the captions. David
  23. I do have quite a lot more when I get around to captioning them. David
  24. Possibly, but I'm not sure how rare they were. I stopped collecting numbers when the A4s left the southern end of the ECML, except for locos I photographed - and even then some loco numbers had to be taken from the slide if I forgot to write down the number at the time I took the photo. David
  25. Austria again this evening. We start with one more from Feldkirch and then move a fairly short distance to the west and stop at Nenzing, on the Arlberg route, to watch a few trains.
