  1. Here is the second batch for today, somewhat earlier than usual as I am doing a lot of a part of my real job at the moment - writing a timetable for a very large school of over 2,200 pupils and nearly 150 teachers. There are only about 6,000 individual lessons to fit in, making sure that every pupil gets the right subjects and so on. A nice little intellectual(?) exercise. These are a mix GCR LMS and ECML. 3. Peter, I'm quite happy for you to "tweak" shots. I just wish I had a bit more time to do more myself at the moment. David
  4. Rob, Having looked at the track plan at: http://www.railwayarchive.org.uk/map/planIndex.php and go to the right page it is clearly a down train, so many thanks. It's the second time I've got the direction wrong here - you'd never think I travelled along the GC to and from school back in the fifties! David
  5. Time now for this evening's batch. We have the last three images from Volume 3 on the Great Central. Then we make a start on Volume 4, looking at Cambridge, Toton and Nottingham Victoria. Those who look at the image numbers in the captions will notice more gaps in this Volume. A few of the prints are too poor to scan (out of focus etc), a few are missing, a few are duplicate prints of images I've already posted. When I started this thread I said there are seven volumes of Dad's prints. I've now sorted all seven volumes and have found a further six albums. Four of them are entirely railway photos, the remaining two contain a number of railway images. I have also found another book of Dad's notes. I suspect some of the additional albums contain the "missing" ones from Vols 1 to7, it will be an interesting challenge to identify all the locations of the other images. 13. Now that really is annoying. I never lost a film but I did once have a problem with a memory card - but fortunately the photos I lost were quite local so I was able to re take them. I remember that Dad once told me about some of the problems he had - he sometimes photographed weddings and more than once problems arose when developing the film and they had to be taken again - fortunately he used to take a batch, leave, develop the film and then he could get back to the reception if a problem arose. David
  14. Most of the negatives were lost in one of my parents' house moves a very long time ago. I have negs for about 20 of the images! One day, when I have more time I'l have another go at the more difficult ones, I may even try photographing them but as most of them causing me problems are not all that sharp it's not a very high priority. By the way, the negatives I do have of the period (most are not railway ones) are showing deterioration, both fading and silvering.
  15. This afternoon we'll have another look around Nottingham and then travel to a couple of locations in Lincolnshire. Once again Dad's use of lustre paper has caused scanning problems to which I still don't have a solution and life is too short to clone out every reflective highlight caused by the paper. 16. That would have been photographed against the light which he didn't often do, but there are another 4 and a bit albums to scan so you never know. David

  19. Eventually I expect I'll come to the end of these, but there are always my own black and whites from 1965-9 and many thousands of colour ones of mine and Dad's, mainly diesels and electrics but some steam as well ranging from a few in the 50s to the present day - so far there are around 9,000 on my flickr site. As for the J1 many thanks, I know rather more about LMSR and GCR engines than GNR ones. David
  20. As the thread continues I think you will see some more, so they weren't that rare.
  21. There is a LMS 2F on a goods at Nottingham Victoria in post #310 on page 14 of this thread and I think there may be some more ex LMS locos at Victoria (besides Class5s which were not uncommon). David
  22. All but one of this afternoon's batch are in and around Nottingham. Sorting out the exact locations from Dad's notes has been quite an "interesting" task involving a number of maps and books, I hope they are now right. One took me ages to recognise, eventually I realised I used to pass almost by it most days when I lived in Nottinhgham. I used to think I had a good memory. 25. Many thanks Ian, I know that from just after I was born until about 1953/4 we to Brighton at least once a year so it could well be 1950ish. I was going by its juxtaposition in the album to the other photos some of which had a date pencilled on them - that one, of course, didn't. David
