  1. This evening we'll spend most of our time looking at the Great Central with a visit to the Great Northern at Rectory Junction followed by another trip to Manchester. Note: The Manchester photos are already on flickr if they seem a bit familiar. 3. We'll spend most of this afternoon at Nottingham Victoria, with a quick look to the north and south and finally ending up at Penistone. 4. Alastair, Many thanks. I wonder why it is carrying Class A headlamps. David
  5. This evening we start on Volume 3, which contains over 270 images, though some are duplicates of ones I've already uploaded and a very few are not good enough to scan. Most of them are on routes of the (former) LNER - a few were taken in 1947 when it was the LNER. Once again most are in the Nottingham, Grantham and Cambridge areas but we will also visit a number of other places. There are also visits to other companies' lines. As usual for many of the photos the dates are approximate. Some of the prints are on a lustre finish paper, which as I've mentioned before, tends to give white pinpricks on dark areas when scanned. I think it's the way the scanner light reflects off the slightly uneven paper surface - but then who'd have known sixty years ago about the future of scanning and posting images on the web. This evening we'll spend a little while at both Grantham and Nottingham Victoria. I think the photos were taken over several years, this volume is certainly not in chronological order. 6. This afternoon we have the last 7 photos from Volume 2 of Dad's prints which set the scene for Volume 3 which, all being well, will be unveiled this evening. After a very quick look at a miniature line we move back to LNER (GCR) lines in and around Nottingham Victoria. Barrow on Soar PleasurePark railway c1950 JVol2269 I know this line existed but cannot find anything about it on the web or in print. I was about one year old when the photo was taken, which may explain why I don't remember it. The man on the train is grandfather on mother's side who had probably driven us there for the day. 7. Many thanks Stewart, I've just had a look at my books with no success and then tried flickr and found an end on shot of the sheds which confirms it. I've changed the photo caption. David

  10. Many thanks, I'll amend the caption to Grantham. I thought it didn't look quite like Colwick but didn't have a photo of Grantham shed to hand when I wrote the caption - for some reason Dad had it down as Nottingham (16A as it was then)! You are quite right, I'll amend the caption, I ought to know as I use the A614 when I visit relatives down there. Many thanks for the information. In a couple of days time we will be moving back to ex LNER lines for the next album (Vol3). David
  11. This evening's batch, once again we are in and around Nottingham. 12. This afternoon's batch of photos. Once again they are a mixed batch of locations in and around Nottingham on the Midland Railway - except the Calverton Colliery line which was opened in BR days and the breakdown train which I think is at Colwick. 13. As you will have noticed the dates are all around the year I type, they could be a year or so either way as only some black and white photos are dated, I get most of the dates either from family photos taken on some of his trips, from other evidence in the photos or from Mum who at 88 still has an excellent memory. David
  14. I've had a look at both the original print and my high res scan. On the print I cannot really see much, the scan appears sharper. The tare appears to be 6-1? - ? as I cannot read the last figure. I can't quite make out the wagon number. There doesn't appear to be any sort of flange at the bottom of the solebar which I presume would be the case if it were steel, but again cannot be certain. The print is on a lustre paper which doesn't give quite as sharp an image as gloss. David
  15. I think they are milk tankers. I think the same train appears in Image 2223 a few posts back where they can be seem more clearly. David
  16. This evening we are visiting a number of locations in and around Nottingham. I've had to think hard to work out where some of them were taken. 17. Looking through the photos of dad's there are quite a lot where engines carrying "BRITISH RAILWAYS" in full appear to be unlined, even of classes which later carried the red and cream lining. I suspect that as many locos by the end of the war were plain black that early repaints just covered over the company initials and replaced them with the full lettering. At the time the railways still had a massive backlog of overhauls so an engine would not have been kept out of traffic for any longer than strictly necessary. Sadly there don't seem to be uge numbers of photos published of these very interesting years. Edited to ad a missing word David
  18. This afternoon we will stay at Normanton on Soar for a short while and then move closer to Nottingham. Once again all the photos were taken on Midland lines. 19. For this evening's batch we are moving to just south of the village of Normanton on Soar (north of Loughborough) on the Midland main line. 21. There are plenty of those if you look in the right places on my flickr site! But there will be some "modern image" in this thread, or at least what passed for that then. David
  22. Could be, The only note I had for this image was the location, so I had a "guess" at the number from the image. David
