This afternoon we visit the Annesely area, looking at both the Midland and Great Central lines, with a few more in Notingham as well. The railway geography in the area was complex with the Midland, Great Central and Great Northern in close proximity. Redhill Tunnel is on the Midland just south of the River Trent. Rod, Thanks for the info on the Lewes U1 photo, I'll add it to the caption and Dad's notes. I'm glad you are enjoying the photos. Dad just took them for his own pleasure, he liked everything to do with railways and so photographed all sorts of things. I know there are some more photos on the Southern to come from the remaining albums. The only information I have on Hartland Point when fitted with sleeve valves comes from the Ian Allan book, Rail Centres, Brighton, which as I indicated in post 476, says it was tested between Brighton and St Leonards and also Groombridge. I don't happen to have much on the Southern in my book collection (and such as there is covers earlier periods), I expect there will more available from other sources concerning Hartland Point and the Leaders. Ian, Yes it was the test bed for the Leaders, I believe the new cylinders were fitted shortly before Nationalisation. I've never read any reports of how the cylinders/valves performed but apparently test run were carried out between Brighton and St Leonards and Groombridge. I think that later on in Dad's photos there is a photo of a piece of a Leader to look forward to! I won't tell you which piece just yet. David

This afternoon there is a mix of ex LNER and LMSR lines for you to look at. Once again the lustre photo paper puts in an appearance causing a lot of white speckles. I have tried photographing the prints but the slightly rough paper surface shows up very much too clearly on the image, so I am still thinking about how to get round it.
