  1. I came across this while looking for some other images this afternoon. A Bruff recovery equipment vehicle at Carlisle 1st September 1987 C9090 David
  2. Sorry, no idea of the registration. I suspect the photo was taken to finish off a roll of film! David Edited as I always make a spelling mistake.
  3. Many thanks Phil, my notes say Bedford so why did I type Ford? David
  4. I came across this photo of a BR minibus at Swayfield (near Corby Glen) and thought I'd add it to this thread. Swayfield BR Bedford CF Minibus Dec 72 J3133 David

  8. Ramrig, Sarahagain is quite right, it is Roadrailer on the side, in red. The BRM articles show it more clearly if I remember correctly. David
  9. My avatar is a 47 on a rake of Roadrailers, larger photo below: Class 47 D1516 probably 18th April 1963 Hope it is some use. David PS This photo was also published in BRM of March 2009
  10. I retired early on a reduced pension over six years ago, it was the best thing I ever did. I still work in a related field about one day a week and enjoy spending the rest of my time on all sorts of hobbies and interests. The hard bit is trying to fit everything I want to do in the time available, especially as I like to get out for a walk for at least an hour a day (usually on the local beach) to keep my weight down and be reasonably fit. David
  11. While reading this I happened to have Brian Haresnape's book "Railway Liveries 1923-1947" on my desk to check something else. On page 114 he states that from 1928 to 1939, the second period, the number of locomotives using crimson lake was now restricted to the more important and modern. i.e: 4-6-2s, Royal Scots, Jubilees, Claughtons, Hughes 4-6-0s and 4-4-0 compounds. This is the period with "LMS" on the tender. They were of course crimson lake prior to 1928 with the loco number on the tender. From 1939 onwards any repaints were black. David Edited, as usual, to correct my poor typing.
  12. Living at various time in Nottingham, Harrogate and Manchester Westerns were exotic beasts. I only ever took one photo of a Western in colour, no idea which one it is, at Taunton on the way home after a student field course which had involved my only journey over what is now the West Somerset Railway. I remember seeing the next Western, the photo taken by my father, when we were on the way to Appledore in Devon on a family holiday to stay with friends who had converted the old cinema there into a holiday home. It was the summer holiday just after I had completed my first year in the sixth form in Harrogate. The last photo, again one of Dad's, is of a Western on Bill McAlpine's special. My father was there as he managed the business at Sewstern which did the sectioning of Ellerman Lines for the NRM as well as managing the line owned by Buckminster Estates used by Flying Scotsman and Pendennis Castle (among others) to get from their then base at Market Overton to thejunction with the ECML at High Dyke. So at the time he knew Bill McAlpine and others well. David
  13. Mainly when I make something I am pleased with - and if it is a loco when it works well. Also when the layouts run well! David Edited to add a missing word.

  19. Here in Northumberland there seem to be fewer birds in the garden probably because there is ample food available in the nearby farmland. Quite often I see starlings and sparrows on the beach investigating washed up seaweed for insects and small crustaceans. But there in the past couple of years I have noticed there are a lot more magpies about and sparrowhawks regularly visit the gardens for a quick snack. In the larger open areas the local gulls are pretty good good at removing small birds. David
  20. In 00 a layout closely based on Armathwaite on the Settle and Carlisle, pre 1914 though my modern image stock does turn up from time to time. In N not a particular place but an amalgam of stations on the Swiss Sudostbahn, one of the private standard gauge railways in Switzerland. The 0 gauge layout is a "never was" at Oxton, Nottinghamshire, but I have drawn it out on a map and constructed a timetable using a 1922 Midland Railway working timetable to check train times at the would have been junction, Lowdham. Books

I find it almost impossible to come out of a shop which has any railway books without a bag containing one or more purchases. I now try to avoid some of the secondhand bookshops in the area....
  22. I have no axe to grind concerning the relative merits of Hornby and Bachmann emus; none of them would ever be seen on the Settle and Carlisle so I won't be buying any of them. From looking at my own photos there is frequently a difference in the actual ride heights of coaches within a set let alone between different classes of emu, even though all the Mark 1 variants should be the same. I suspect it depends on the condition of the springs and also the passenger loading. I find it quite fascinating reading all the comments regarding accuracy of shape, detailing and so on. The only way to settle the argument on size/shape is for someone to measure every dimension of every component. As for missing detailing - on my 00 layout I rarely look at stock from less than 1 metre away as I built the layout simply to run trains on - if I want to look at things very closely I'll look at my 7mm scale stock where I can see the detail!. David
  23. That's quick, I've only just put that photo on flickr!! David
  24. I've only just come across this thread, I'm very very impressed by your work Mike, I just wish I could build things half as well. That bridge is just superb. I made my first visit to Hessle in 1966, there are a few photos of that visit and the route from Selby toFiley at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidwf2009/sets/72157626469154245/ Even by 1966 it looked quite a bit different to your period. David PS I didn't really intend the slide show, but that's what I got when I put the link in! David
  25. Finding lots of old photos of Dad'sI didn't know I had A3 in blue, A3 in LNER livery etc
