    How long has the UK motorway network been virtually impassable due to congestion with traffic during the middle of a working day in August? Not even the usual day for going to or from your holiday! I gave up in disgust last Friday when driving from Devon to the Wirral, and left the awful M5 at Ashchurch, eventually trusting in the A49.

      Simon - if I were you, I'd seriously contemplate making the journey overnight, just like people did several decades ago, before the motorway system was built. Then you can have the pleasure of arriving at your boarding house just in time for the breakfast that the indomitable landlady will refuse to provide, on the grounds that you've arrived too early!
