    Almost exactly 60 years ago at Lewisham 90 souls perished after a train overran signals in dense fog and collied with another train, bringing a bridge down onto the wreckage.

      The old fogs had a good dollop of coal tar at their heart, modern fogs are a pale ghost, thanks to the Clean Air act.

      The temporary replacement bridge is still in place.

      Hroth is right. I left work in Manchester in smog at 3.45pm in 1958 and got home in Oldham at 8pm, my face black above the handkerchief! The Lewisham crash was a nasty one. Poor souls.
