  1. Oh Lordy.

I didn't need one, I don't model in 7mm, let alone narrow gauge and I've no layout to run anything on.

But I've always loved the prototype so bought the SR liveried Taw and the four coaches are arriving today. What have I done?!!

Be interested to see anyone who has experience of doing the 0-14 conversion on the loco. Given I'm usually stretching 4mm up from OO to EM or P4, shrinking down from 16.5 to 14mm will be a new experience!

  3. Having seen this year's floor plan, it does appear that the 'corridor' space under the balcony previously occupied by the societies and some demonstrators (MERG/DEMU/WCPR/EMGS) for the past 20 years has not been allocated to anyone this year. There may be a good reason for this and it is something that is being/will be discussed with Warners separately by EMGS and no doubt others.

I am aware that some societies have paid for stand space in the hall itself.

  4. So I’ve been reading through this thread with interest. The new models look really good. I have an interest in china clay and still have the stock from my old Wheal Elizabeth layout. I’m wondering whether any of the existing or future announced batches would be suitable for Cornish operations? 37 142, 196, 206, 207 spring to mind. I have the Kernow limited edition 207 William Cookworthy. Tre Pol & Pen in Railfreight livery would be nice.

Then again the limited edition Defiance 50149 is also appealing!

  5. I found the instructions confusing and was not sure I had sufficient parts. They’re laser cut ply which I glued together with cyano. I seemed to end up making extra bits myself. There are scale drawings in Great Western Journal edition 0 (preview) that I used as reference. If you treat the kit as a useful set of scratch aids that gives you about 80% of what you need you won’t be disappointed.

With perseverance it’ll make up into a nice model. Hope that helps.

  6. Bought one of these on the strength of the Ferry Van and wasn't disappointed.

Conversion to P4 is really straightforward.

    1. Prise out the tension lock couplings.
    2. Unscrew the NEM coupler pockets.
    3. The body drops out.
    4. Replace the steel weight with some lead shot. Beware the weight is sandwiched between chassis and body when assembled. 1mm thickness max.
    5. Replace the wheels. Brass pin point bearings are included in the original wagon.
    6. The brakes push out and can be easily trimmed to be refitted closer to the wheels. I glued mine back in with MEK.
    7. Add a bit more lead shot to the underside, held in place with superglue.
    8. Enlarge coupling hook holes slightly
    9. Fit 3 links (Brassmasters).
    10. All done in less than half an hour.

I wish every wagon was this easy!

  7. During my local EM group zoom meeting last night I took the just received and rather lovely Ferry Van out of the box and had a look. Replacement P4 wheels from Branchlines were dropped in for the time being without bother. I think this will ultimately need springing though. Maybe the Dave Bradwell units or the Bill Bedford pedestal ones if you split them.

  8. Thanks to all those who stopped by Clevedon WCPR and had a natter. I know some people don't get light railways but we had lots of nice comments and I must say a big thanks to my operating crew. I found the show quieter than last time I went, which the club said they were kind of expecting.

As to access, I found the NEC's voyager system really straight forward to organise online. I arrived about 14:45  and I was straight into the hall to unload via the access gate. We were all set up and out by 16:30. The M42 was it's usual self and I heard lots of complaints about the time it takes to get into the NEC on both mornings. Breakdown was one of the smoothest. I went to get the car from E1 at 17:30 and after driving through gate 1 was directed to door 5.8 as 5.7 was chock full. We were leaving the NEC at 18:00. Sadly the M5 on the way back was a bit busy with a car fire, breakdown and roadworks. Overall though getting in and out was much easier than last time I exhibited there.

Still, the show was a great one to go to and operate at. I'd have liked a little more EM and P4 layouts there but understand the impact covid and historical cycle of invites has had. I did miss the overseas modellers though. There's always something weird and wonderful to look at. Hope that can continue next year.

  9. Home from a really enjoyable day at Portishead. Hall was busy all day, over 800 through the door. Quality layouts everywhere, no filler and so nice to catch up with so many friends, old and new. It’s been tiring taking two layouts but the lovely comments I’ve had all day have really given me a boost.
I can’t thank my co-operators enough. Currently sitting with my feet up and a glass of fermented apple juice.

Hope everyone has a great time and got home safely.

and I only turned my back for one second!!

Thanks, do you still have the instructions by any chance? - By the way I don't like the tube boilers, they are a pain to solder so prefer to roll my own.

    That’s what I did.

I’ll have a look for the instructions when I’m back home. I did a blog of the build here on RMWEB (it’s the middle one in my signature footer) but as it’s over 10 years ago the photos didn’t survive the recent hosting change.

As Pete notes, pretty much all the variants were included (but no parts list was included - mine had various minor bits missing which I only discovered through reading the text).

As I remember the instructions weren't great though (the drawing of the cab interior turned out to be from a J15 with the screw reverse tippexed out on the original, for example - there's no reversing lever in the box or the instructions), but it's a reasonable basis for an O2.

    Adam

Just be wary that the tube supplied for the boiler doesn’t fit between the tank sides and the smoke box is wrong. I’ve built one in p4 and with a bit of work the kit makes a nice model

Theres an access lane from the athletics club that comes in near the back of the hall and the traditional way out if you can picture it.

I’ll post any updates in the morning when I get there to open up.

  14. Access tomorrow is from South Hill Road. The centre tells us there will be stewards on hand to direct people but we’re all in the dark about the details. Screenshot from the leisure centre website attached.

Allow a little extra time and safe journeys everyone!

Great day today seeing folks I haven’t seen since pre Covid. Bring your cash, the members sales is very well stocked!
