  1. Yes, Albyn had contacted GER society at my request, and I had the info. From working through the ex GER coaches I have built up a pretty good idea of how they evolved. There are no photos of these coaches in GER days as far as I know ,certainly none recorded online. The photos on WCPR site and from Albyn, only show one side, but at least the other end is seen in the crash photo. From the diagram for the later 6 wheel version, which has the same odd mixture of left and right handed windows in doors on viewed side, I deduced something similar on on other side(but in this case all left handers). For some reason the window in the guard's end is nearer to the end, I presume for some operational reason. The drawing at NRM might confirm this, but I may only get hold of a copy if I decide to do the original GER version, as I want more info on the duckets, which I now think are next to the door, not at the end.

The WCPR ones are now up and running and available.

I've ordered one and hopefully will be able to build it before Clevedon's next outing at Preston in March next year. 247 Developments do the corresponding WCPR wagon/coach plates by the way. I commissioned them from Errol years ago and they're still in the range.

  2. It was a gamble, but I don't think I can get it any close without original drawings. Even the GER outline/working diagrams are not completely correct sometimes.

Did you see the reference to the GER brake in the latest issue of the Colonel, which fortuitously arrived today?

There's an email from the GER society. The coach was No 181, sold to the WC&P in October 1916. A GER diagram 508 vehicle, body length 27ft, one of 56 built. Coach 181 was built in Dec 1880 and with drawn in Dec 1915.

The original GA was microfilmed by OPC and is at the NRM, ref 11076. The description is Main Line Brake Van, The Stratford Works drawing number is 6124 but don't use that for searching apparently.

Apologies if this information is already known to you in your investigations, but I thought I'd share just in case.

  3. I haven't converted those particular models, but I know a few people who have successfully pulled out RTR wheels and run on EM track without any bother.

One extremely useful tool is a GW Models wheel puller, since this does not affect the quartering. Googling will bring up pictures. GW don't have an online presence but they do advertise in MRJ and attend the major 4mm fine scale shows.

  4. Eric

I feel your pain, having had to chase down pcb shorts on Weston. Every sleeper for Clevedon was tested with a meter before soldering. It's amazing how small a sliver of copper still conducts electricity! It's probably the sleepers and a burr at the side. Ask me how I know!

    Couple of other observations:

Are the headshunt rails lower left resting on the sleeper for the stub point causing a short through the point? I don't see a gap in the second sleeper of that point, but it may be the image.

Have you checked the switches, connectors etc? I had a short on Cheddar which turned out to be an errant strand of wire bridging two pins in a d plug connector.

Are the frogs causing a short? It's where + and - meet!

    Good luck.

  5. Those 16 gauge strings. Are they plain steel and not wound? They look brilliant IMO. What make did you get; Earnie Ball by any chance?

    Phil

Yes they're straight and not wound. I've used a mixture. Ernie Ball are good. I bought a load on interweb from Tone Deaf music as they do multi packs of the same string (their own brand). Worked out about 65p each.
  6. Pictures of the stools as promised. I'm using the round rod variety. As you can see, I made a setting out error so will need to move the bases. The whole assembly will lift up enough to allow me to slide a piece of card underneath without too much bother.

I have to say I'm impressed with these.

  7. I'm starting to use them at the moment. First run installed last night. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post. First impressions are good. I'm using cyano to stick to bases of plasticard stuck to the trackbed before ballasting.

I'm using Brassmasters and MSE etched cranks, expansion links etc.

I'm using 16 gauge guitar strings to represent the round rodding that I'm modelling. It scales at 0.4mm and fits nicely in the moulded holes. Each string is about 800mm long and has the advantage that it wants to be straight. They cost about 50p each.

  8. Had a very enjoyable day yesterday. Drove up from Somerset on a whim, ended up helping on members sales for most of the day! Great selection of layouts and nice to have a catch up with people.

    Always a very good show.
