  1. Since I use BR warning yellow for UP Armor yellow, it stands to reason that you could reverse that theory... But I'm surprised you can't import Railmatch Acrylic colours, they aren't volatile and are supplied in sealed containers so the spill risk is minimal.
  2. On my lottery winners list of things to do is provide full barriers, cctv, tank traps, and stinger missiles on all of the RH&DR crossings- there is obviously a history of abuse (by locals) and I think the CPS were right to go for more serious levels of prosecution considering the reaction to sentences dished out after previous incidents. We stayed next to Dungeness Rd LC a couple of years ago, and although we didn't witness any specific abuse by road vehicles, was talking to a diesel driver who had turned up to phot a pair of visiting engines on an evening extra, who mentioned he had an impending court case where a car had gone in front of him at Romney Sands (which makes the defense of knowing the timetable to be laughable...). He still looked visibly upset when talking about the relatively recent fatalities.

    Peak 45015

I was using the 83 as an example in response to your comment that there is "nothing that cannot be restored". As other comments earlier in this thread have proven, the practicalities of loco preservation, even for those with deep pockets, means that theory only belongs in dreamland.
  4. It's possible and has been done with heavy portals at Saltcoats in North Ayrshire- another coastal section that is often on the news.
  5. Reading between the lines in this article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26068375 , from the paragraph headed "too important", Christian Woolmar had better be careful what he wishes for as the justification for a "Dawlish Avoider" can only come from NOT rebuilding future damage, which means one bad storm and it's game over. So do you build a new alignment along the Teign Valley and include a "Dawlish Parkway" station, or abandon that area completely in favour of reopening through Okehampton, and make Torbay only accessible from Plymouth via Newton Abbot...? I doubt three lines could be supported, and the economies of reopening the LSWR route shouldn't affect those who live on the opposite coast.
  6. We've booked a cottage in Starcross for a week at Easter, and although will be arriving by car, were planning to use the train for day trips. It'll hardly be a massive revenue earner for FGW, but enough to make me rethink our plans should the line not be reopened by then.
  7. What's that thing above the doors...? It must be out of gauge..

    EBay madness

I really don't understand why someone would use this kind of "background" to show a model off...: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251442708497
  9. ...which creates an interesting cornundrum for the average punter at an average show, who wonders why someone would go so far as to remove the trip pins, when such a valuable asset has been provided by the manufacturer...
  10. If they had have done, the rest of the train would have blocked the clearance point, and the loco would have been trapped.
  11. I've done that before.... It seemed like a good idea until I realised that every car that was spotted there blocked the crossing...
  12. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but David's post referred to the 2013 Nottingham show. With "Buckingham" appearing in 2012, having a vintage layout might have seemed to be an annual event, but this year the crown will be worn by clockwork Hornby and an impressive Meccano bridge.

    Peak 45015

I'd agree if something had been done to this loco when it was first preserved such as making it weathertight and a proper repaint, but based on the facts to date such as the lack of work done on the loco, the "quality" of the repaint, and the simple truth that the established Peak preservationists didn't want it in the first place speaks for itself. Having it stuffed and mounted somewhere might seem viable as opposed to outright scrapping, but don't forget any proposers of such a plan must really want this loco to make it happen, as the transport costs for a Peak are considerably more than other more complete locos that might be considered for such a project.
  15. A ) Paint on a solution used to etch circuit boards (if I can find the spare crystals I have stashed away). B ) Use a Dremel-type motor tool with a brass wire wheel, or a glass fibre brush to remove excess copper. C ) Solder the rails directly to the brass screws, if the joint can't be hidden. D ) Only model street running, although this makes disquising the join in the road surface trickier.
  16. I need to find something to hide the area in the top right corner, apart from lineside vegetation (the grass seems to grow to footplate level). Cuba looks like "Big Sky" country, so needs to appear to look open like you said. It'll be on two 3'9" (approx) boards, it's too long to do something silly again such as cram everything on one board, and the above plan gives me a rough idea as to where the joint can go without interfering with the track plan too much.
  17. Instead of doodling on paper, I've decided to do something neater and see what can be fitted in a token 7' x 15" space, using Peco code 75 geometry. I've had a vague idea for a plan floating around for a few weeks now, and realised that instead of trying to cram everything into a smaller scenic section, a larger space could be operated with designated sceniced fiddling areas in the layout space* at home, but expanded with additional fiddle yards when set up in the Garage or at any shows I might care to drag it out to. The electrified Hershey runs from bottom left to top right, with an unelectrified branch for steam hauled sugar cane trains and a mixed train hauled by a 70 tonner disappearing bottom right. Trains from it can run towards the proposed mill complex or into the station area, where trains can be re-marshalled. I'm not quite sure of the mill complex yet, it might be possible to have most of it off stage, with loaded trains running in and empties leaving. Either way, I didn't want to cram too much track in at this stage. * The "layout space" at home is approx. 92" long, it would have been longer but the position of the wall between it and the kitchen was decided by the size of the fridge, which Mrs 298 decided was going to be of the American style and thus needed a larger space.
  18. Is that double sided copperclad strip....? If it is, it helps to gap the screws so they are electrically dead, I once nearly destroyed a Shinohara crossing trying to isolate it from a mystery short, when the real problem was a nearby baseboard joint and power finding a path down the brass screws and along the underside of the strip.
  19. There is always somewhere about 70 miles south of Florida that has lots of palm trees. What make are they, Chris....?

    EBay madness

I thought part of the license agreement included the clause that the plates could only be supplied glued to a loco bodyshell- which either means that these have come out of a back door somewhere, or are unlicensed copies.
  21. In the words of Bob Mortimer on Shooting Stars, "Oi, Vic- you've killed that dog"....
  22. I'm a big advocate of using DCC, but part of the step change I learnt from Bredon was you didn't need a massive loco fleet on the layout or have to cram lots of track into a limited space. Am I right in thinking the article only mentioned a 4F and a couple of J72's...?
  23. I'd hold "Bredon" responsible for convincing an impressionable 11 yr old to turn his trainset oval into a convincing model railway. Unfortunately I failed to understand that less is more and a limited space doesn't lend itself to a Hornby King on Centenary stock, and I didnt have room for a goods yard and an engine shed, complete with turntable. But one layout I'd like to see again was in the media over 20 years ago, and at the Harrogate Show in 1994. It was a large Lionel layout, and seem to feature alot of the operating accessories that added alot of play value that I'd expect from a train set, that Hornby only scratched the surface of with their Giraffe car and operating Mail set.
  24. Good find, I did think an etch might be better but it seems to work well as a 3d print and could be scaled up by the designer to represent a standard gauge car.
