  1. I tend to use matt clear cote through the airbrush. I dont even know if you have an airbrush ive never asked. I personally find it hard to get a matt finish with a brush. Always seems to dry satin for me no matyer how much I stir it. Humbrol matt varnish might do you for these as although usually drying with a very slightly cloudy finish it might give the illusion of slightly faded paint I dont know. Experimentation is the name of the game really. Cav
  2. Thats a cracking job on the OCA Neil. Are you varnishing the powders in? Cav
  3. Screwlink Screwlink haha. If i can use screw links on Outon with all the overhead wires then you can! I have to echo the progress side though. Im finding it a nightmare to find time at the mo. Managed to get some interior modelling done last night on my gatehouse though. I aim to get it completely done tonight so I can move on to the board tomorrow. Cav
  4. That looks really good mate. Blue is always a winner in the wrinkly tin stakes hence the building on Outon Road. I originally did that grey but changed it to blue. I like the way you have given it a worn look. Very effective.
  5. Its a good idea but I agree it needs to be short and to the point. I did a two pager for DEMU which I pinned to the front of the layout but not many people actually read it. Most ask questions about the build personnally which I like as I get to natter. lol.
  6. I like the idea of a brochure. That might have to be something I do once the extensions done. What will it be a brief history, specs and photos? Cav
  7. I dont tbink I would use cream. maybe try to replicate weathered galv steel. I always think a light blue works well on wrinkly tin buildings.
  8. Looking good mate. The paving slabs are particularly nice IMO. One thing I would avoid though is using stock wheels as scenery. Real axles arent the same as the model pinpoint counterparts so give the game away I always feel. If you want axle sets then I would get hold of some P4 standard wheels with the tiny flanges and then try to make a representation of the roller barings on the axles. Cheers Cav
  9. Loved this at the members day Marc. its all about atmosphere and even with the intense heat in the hall I fancied getting my coat on! As an ex steelworks research technologist it brought back a few memories of walking round the less trodden areas of teeside and aldwarke. What would really give this layout some beans is some recorded steelworks sound. All the banging and distant hum of the arc furnaces etc would be fantastic. Those things are undbelievably loud. I visited magna in sheffield about 6 years ago and they have a simulated arc furnace there. I can tell you the simulation is no where near as loud as the real thing! Great work Cav
  10. How much you asking chap?
  11. Oooh that 47 is a thing of beauty. I like a lot.
  12. Same pw team as working on outon road. maybe deeping is their home depot haha. like what youve done. you should give them a dirty wash though now to tone them down and create false shadow on their clothing! Cav
  13. Thats starting to look really good. i almost wish i could get away with one on outon. Im still trying to justify one of bachmanns new 85s when they come out! Cav
  14. Yeah cool. Will have to see whether your stock will go through my trackwork though as the points are built to 1mm flangeways which widens the back to back a smidge. Some rtr goes through fine but others bind. Easy fix on most stuff. Not so on steamers and shunters with their quartered wheels. We'll have to have a play on the day. Cav
  15. The weathering looks top notch mate. I wonder who did that? A good camera makes a load of difference mate. I got a digital SLR especially to take model shots! I havent had it out for a while though. Cav
  16. Excellent, in fact its a shame about the coupler and blurred shot of the 09 by the shed as that would look very realisic indeed.
  17. At request I've added this one of Outon Roads resident shunter, longsight's 08915. Regards Cav
  18. I might have to pop over for a look at mansfield. I would love to do O but the cost in space and money makes it impractical. Cav
  19. Yeah thats no problem mate, to get the right finish they are gonna need to take time. Will be a cool day for sure!! Some great layouts there too!
  20. Haha I dont think there'll be much time for weathering. I have a couple of additions but nothing major, Hopefully I can lend a couple of sound locos to play with too.
  21. Me too chap. Outon Road ran so well at DEMU I can just hope she runs as well in Stafford. You gonna bring some locos up? Be nice to see the 09 again at least!!
  22. Looking good Neil, really coming along, I wouldn't go crazy with the detailing though, sometimes less is more. I quite like the rear of the shed with not a lot there. If anything just chuck a couple of pallets out there or lean one or too things against the depot wall . Real working depots aren't knee deep in rubbish! Cav
  23. Ooh nice. Good model that. Cav
  24. haha cool. Ill have to bring my paints and airbrush along too then. Cav
