  1. So a direct comparison to AWS can be made, a few accidents have been assigned to the concept of a driver on 'autopilot', but AWS still reduced accidents. And of course not exactly going to require NASA to implement, what with it being simple AND logic between a Boolean for the tipper bed and a comparison output for a speedometer set point. With CAN bus being standard on all vehicles, it doesn't exactly need NASA's budget either.
  2. The cynic in me wishes to point out that the fact that road vehicles such as tippers, not required by government to have safety devices as simple as a buzzer warning the driver of a raised tipper bed, but requiring railways to meet 180 years of legislation is why the railways lost traffic to the roads. Something something """Progress""".
  3. A case of the old Bachmann Mk1's with the roof ribs I feel.
  4. And there I go dropping a clanger, roof tanks should have been a dead give away, get more evidence I should learn to read XD
  5. All the Gosford Green - Linwood services I've seen so far seem to be listed a Freightliner services, but I have been concentrating on services routed through the avoiding line, and so might have missed some services through the station for crew change. From Warwickshire Railways Closest I can find is this 1971 image of Brush Type 4 1842 (Later Class 47 47 192), which I guess is a big enough reason for me, 4S32 appears as 16:30 Gosford Green to Johnstone MWTO in the British Railways London Midland Region WTT Mandatory Train Services 07/05/1973 - 05/05/1974 Section Gp2. Regards
  6. TBH, shade of rail blue is immaterial, with the possible exception of those wishing to model an 'ex-works' Siphon-G*. These require weathering to the point where you have to squint and get the angle of lighting just right, in order to confirm they were in fact intended to be rail blue at some point, but are now just filthy grey/brown/dirty. Case in point, and as if I needed any justification for more NPCCS, the Class 86 85 is rail blue. Everything else is debatable. From John Woolley on Flikr *Said people should be shunned in the street
  7. Thanks Bertie, STN's have been very elusive for my chosen period and location, as are unfortunately books covering the area and period, alas railway interest in general seems to have dipped considerably after the change from steam. I'm always on the lookout for book recommendations, and I do have all issues of Railway Magazine and the Railway Observer which do have some fascinating insights, I shall go over them again with the aim to cross refence against the WTT knowledge at hand. Regards
  8. Hi Bertie, Sorry I must have missed this reply. HTO's or HOP21 are required by the bucket load, as they certainly seem to be the most popular coal wagon in the Carlisle area at the time. I've also managed to procure the correct WTT for my April 1974 time period. 8M06 would seem to be HTO/HOP21 coal, plenty of them seen here: https://www.flickriver.com/photos/tags/bardonmillcolliery/interesting/ I'll hazard a guess that 8E63 is the return empties. I also managed to procure the ER Section H Mandatory WTT, but only the UP has anything of note. 8E14 and 8E18. Interestingly, not found anything that seems to be working directly to say Workington from the Newcastle area, I assume this is because it would have headed into Carlisle New Yard, and worked from there to Workington. But just prior to this BR reinstated the curve to the Maryport at Bog Junction, seemingly for Iron ore trains from Newcastle to Workington, but certainly didn't seem to run during my period of interest. I'm also pawing over WTTs for stuff heading North and South along the WCML through Carlisle, but that'll be a separate topic. Regards
  9. Been struggling with justification myself, I'm not sure these are applicable to Carlisle circa April 1974, most motorail shots show Mk1 car carriers. I know the Cartic-4's didn't last long on Motorail anyway. I'm still pouring over WTT's and constructing a massive spreadsheet of possible services to investigate, so if anyone knows anything I'd love to hear it. Regards Matt
  10. Any thoughts for offering EM/P4 drop in wheels as an accessory for these?
  11. Differences covered here: Regards
  12. Had a mildly interesting one a couple weeks back. Unknown number, answer to the sound of laughter and and shall we say, a ladies voice with suspect accent. I've berated my bank before on this matter, you DON'T call me, and then ask me security questions.
  13. Excellent, and now for some inspiration! 40132 Stafford 1974, from Andy Hoare Flickr
  14. Hi Wheatley, thank you very much. That's exactly what I'm looking for! As with everything manufacturing, it's all about economy of scale, so I'd already guessed I won't be able to get a few meters. Regards Matt
  15. Ahh-ha, thank you for that useful tipbit. Indeed, Peco used to do Code 82 Flat Bottom rail as part of it's Individulay range (IL-115), but was dropped a few years back, and now you can only get Code 83. Alas, according to one expert on modeling FB rail, dimensionally the Peco Code 82 was by far the best on the market and other offerings have severe short comings in the head or foot dimensions.
  16. Exactly what it says on the tin, but specifically, how are 2mm/4mm/7mm scale model railway rails made? Rolled(Hot/Cold)? Ground? Shaped? And where do the 'Codes' fit into their size? P.s. I'd love to know any engineering firms that actually make the stuff. Regards

  18. Looks like 86 011 is in response to 86 036 having sold out! That should should go some way to disperse the idea that AC locomotives 'don't sell'. Regards
  19. Thanks Les, The plastic models were what I had in mind. I've used old formula superstrip before, which worked amazingly on Lima models, but not so much Bachmann. I'm yet to try Superstrip 2. My concern would be damaging the plastic with Superstrip 2. I shall have to procure some, and try in a small area. Regards Matt
  20. Hi All, Any recommendations for Paint Stripping for 70's Trix models? Regards Matt
  21. Apples to Oranges I'm afraid. Express passenger locomotive designed for sustained high speed running, compared against high capacity multiple units designed for frequent start-stop operation. Couple with Regional Operating differences stemming from grouping to operation under BR. The theory was clearly nonsense, and the practice abandoned as BR developed standard layouts for Cabs on locomotives, starting with AC Electrics. The decision is attributed to H G Ivatt CME of the LMS. To quote Michael Hill and David Gray from the book 'Class 40's at work' by John Vaughn (Ian Allen, 1981)
  22. Looks far too short to be a headshunt to me, possibly a sand drag? Although I don't know the area, so maybe i'm wrong.
