  1. Well, it takes two years to build at a cost of over £900. You would have to be insane to do that right 2 years hobby for 900 doesn't sound too bad.
  2. Were sets kept securely fastened together until remarshalled? Were loose coaches added outside the sets only?
  3. I think I have 3 chassis with the gear split. Thanks for the reference.
  4. O/T Years ago Punch did an issue on the North. In a survey to find out where "the North" was,the replies mentioned the next county, the next town, the next street, but never "here".
  5. Jason: will the test model make it to any shows in Canada?
  6. My sign says "Construction halted due to Industrial Action".
  7. Lloyd: Changing to dead-frog points is the worst solution. The electrofrog section that would be dead is too long. Test your locos through some points as they come. If they don't stall and short out, you can use them that way. The problem is some stock that may have narrow gauge wheels that short between stock rail and the open point. (Both points are the same polarity). If you have shorting, you will need to separate the frog by breaking those wires and adding a switch to power the frog. Best is a switch on the point motor, but I have also used a microswitch pushed by the point tie rod. I think Peco's instructions cover this.
  8. Comic strip from last week. Please read the readers' comments - they improve on the original. http://www.gocomics.com/getfuzzy/2014/11/08 My wife now uses the phrase "Tootsie Roll Emporium".
  9. It's reported that the Pope has raised all the urinals in the Vatican. He said he wants to keep the Cardinals on their toes. When told to a group of teachers' wives, one wife wasn't laughing. She was asked if, possibly, she didn't know what a urinal was. "No, I'm not Catholic."
  10. The entire area is different now. Mississauga has been almost completely developed and de-agriculturalized. If the accident happened today there would be major property damage and probably must human injury.
  11. I'll bump this story again -- it's now been 35 years. One note: the woman who was mayor of Mississauga then, and has been since -- Hazel McCallion -- did not run in last month's elections. She's now 93.
  12. She: Will you remember me tomorrow? He: Yes, of course. Will you remember me next month? Yes, I will. Will you remember me next year? I'll remember you forever. Knock, knock. Who's there? You've forgotten me already!
  13. and instead of coffee, he got the Flying Scotsman. Harry Potter had a hangover after one too many pints down at the pub. Unable to move from his bed to make a coffee, he reached for his wand. Waving it, he recited "expresso patronum
  14. Look closely at a scratch built model and proclaim it "Good enough to be a Hornby."
  15. Toronto, Canada, has 2 unused underground stations. The article mentions Lower Bay which is a relic of the original interlining when the Bloor Danforth line was built. (1966) There was a triangular operation using the two new termini and one of the original line's. The junction wye used a pair of 2-level stations on the BD line. The lines were operated as integrated for 6 months, then separately for 6 months, which has now become 48 years. St George station became the terminus for the Yonge line trains and an interchange with the BD line. Lower Bay was blocked off but used for stock transfer and occasional film work. The Yonge line was later extended through St George and northward. The wye is in the running for "most expensive piece of track per passenger served". There is also a roughed-in but never used station under Queen (at Yonge). This was built in the 40s/early 50s with the Yonge subway when it was thought that the Queen streetcar would be put underground. It's still proposed sometimes. The platforms are used as an underpass between north and southbound platforms, and for storage. I've seen the tunnel when the access doors have been open.
  16. Is Hugh William's wife likely to read this thread?
  17. Eric: I believe the correct designation for this gauge is HOw5, although HOw60 might be acceptable.
  18. I usually start at one end of the curve. Sometimes I start at points or crossings -- things that go in a particular place. The flex track can also do both a straight and curved portion and often has to as the lengths don't come out even. Peco make a double track spacing gauge that will put the track out the right distance. You may find it easier to put the track down, trim the inside rail, then straighten it out and solder the joints. This eliminates some of the kinks at the joints. You may also want to put a bit of curve at the ends of the rails -- not easy to do smoothly, though.
  19. What I can't find out is whether a 25 by 100 mm board is that or 19 mm by 94 mm.
  20. "Right, Lord!" "What's a cubit?" (--B Cosby as Noah)
  21. Frank: I'm currently rebuilding after a move, so I haven't ordered anything yet. I wonder if there's a market for something that would fit over surface-mounted Peco point motors? I'm not sure what would be put that close to the tracks.
  22. But isn't a model of a non-existent thing the prototype?
  23. While you're in Rapid City, say hello to my friend, Chester Alan Arthur.
  24. The first newspaper I read this morning said that the railway had been arrested (headline). In the article they twice mentioned the hydraulic brakes leaking off. (drip, drip, drip...)
  25. Does that mean that they'll have to renumber one of them as they did with 844?
