  1. There was a real layout based around a combination of that and the Pilbara iron ore railways called Arid Australia. In 1996 it set a Guinness-certified world record for the longest model train, 70.2m long comprising 7 locos and 650 ore hoppers. In HO scale that represents a train 6.11 km (3.8 miles) long.
  2. Joseph Bazalgette built the world's most advanced sewer to take human waste away from London. His great-great-grandson gave us Big Brother.
  3. Here's an interesting one, not much track but the rest isn't just open countryside. It's still just an oval of track with only one train length visible but the focus of the layout is the above ground scenery based on Turnpike Lane. My photos don't really do justice to the magnificent model of the Charles Holden station.
  4. Not British but fits in with "prototype for anything".
  5. I had that exact picture as a jigsaw when I was a kid. I think I got it for my 7th or 8th birthday.
  6. 2 minutes later he was eaten by a drop bear.
  7. Pothole - the one everybody avoids Wicket Keeper - puts on gloves then stands back Replica (Gun) - doesn't work and can't be fired Bottle - empty from the neck up Pluto - far out and not very bright Egon - where's 'e gone again? Shania - they don't impress you much Blister - appears after the hard work is done
  8. Preserved A62 has been returned to service, seen here on a test run with V/Line's reactivated A66 which returned to revenue service a year ago in the classic 1980s livery.
  9. 45112, RFO 1211 and 13 x KAA en route to Long Marston in 2007. Note the flames from the brakes!
  10. It's almost twice as long as the Peco N turntable, representing 130' in 1:160 scale. The OP wants one smaller than the Peco.
  11. The surprisingly popular world of online trainspotting: ‘Some people keep it on 24 hours a day https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/jun/25/online-trainspotting-rail-streaming
  12. From what I read, the GWR bogies and what is now the outer track were replaced in the 1968-69 upgrade. An inner track with 4 additional bogies (don't know what type) to take some of the weight was added at the same time. A blog post by Didcot Railway Centre says they did look at the wheelsets out of the GWR bogies some time after they were replaced, but were found to be too badly damaged. While we're on the subject, the Australia Telescope Compact Array sits on a 3.2 km long track made from Australian Standard 68kg/m rail to a gauge of 9.6m. The Australasian Railway Association officially recognised it as a "railway" which would make it the widest gauge in the world. The complex which includes the ATCA is named the Paul Wild Observatory. Astronomer Paul Wild was a lifelong railway enthusiast and as child in the UK wanted to be a train driver specifically to drive a GWR King class.
  13. There are some small ones like this on Shapeways. 84mm (~21' in OO9) is long enough to turn a Hunslet or Baldwin.
  14. For those who don't know, an "esolang" is an eroteric programming language. These programming languages are not intended to be practical but are a form of "software art". But as far as esolangs go (a real language that can, in theory, actually be used) this one takes the cake. Even non-programmers will want to take a look at this example!
  15. He originally used Tennant just as a stage name in the UK for that reason. He later legally changed his name to meet American Screen Actors Guild requirements. Talbot Rothwell was in the same POW camp, which is how Peter Butterworth ended up in many of the Carry On films.
  16. It's leaning over a bit, probably a suspension issue. Quite a worry as the wide W cars are right on the limit of the loading gauge.
