  1. At least 261 people are now known to have been killed and 650 injured in a multiple train collision in India's eastern Odisha state, officials say. More than 200 ambulances were sent to the scene in Balasore district, says Odisha's chief secretary Pradeep Jena. One passenger train is thought to have derailed before being struck by another on the adjacent track late on Friday. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-65793257
  2. Which was, under the Modernisation Plan, supposed to happen by 1975...
  3. Going way back, there was an express from Ripon to King's Cross hauled by a Deltic.
  4. FGW did this in the mid/late noughies. There was one early morning HST service with no equivalent return working. IIRC the average patronage as far as Hereford could be counted on one hand so it didn't last long. The bean counters must have concluded that stopping was more expensive than the (literal) handful of extra fares.
  5. Despite the hype, you're about 6 times more likely to be killed by a cow than by a shark in Australia. Don't mess with cows.
  6. They were all named after people or things associated with the area between Edinburgh and Aberdeen. This is one reason I argued for 2007 to be named Saint Margaret as it would tick all the boxes.
  7. That Lord President is named after the position of Lord President of the Court of Session, the head of the judiciary in Scotland.
  8. It's worth noting that the position of Lord President was one of those "useless non-jobs" (described as such by Bernard Donoughue, one of the inside sources for Yes Minister) where a Prime Minister would push a political rival as revenge and/or to keep them out of the spotlight. That worked out well...
  9. The Sword of Offering weighs 5 1/4 lb (2.4 kg) and has to be carried unsheathed for most of the ceremony.
  10. The USA is a bad example of electronic voting because of the proprietary voting machines. There are many other examples around the world where it DOES work, generally where they use off the shelf hardware and open source software which is open to scrutiny. I personally voted electronically in Australian Capital Territory elections 4 times when I lived there. Estonia is another good example of where it works well.
  11. The Great Train Race from Steamfest.
  12. Ukraine has Challenger 2s and Abrams now, plus Leopard 2s. Ask Iraq how that worked out. This is like the UK pulling Centurions out of storage and sending them into action. But even the 105mm L7 gun from 1958 (used on the Centurion Mk 5, M-60 and Leopard 1) was specifically designed to take out a T-54/55.
  13. Fire destroys workshop at Tasmania's Don River heritage railway https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-04-04/fire-workshop-tasmania-don-river-heritage-railway/102183238
