  1. A dismal grey day at Grosmont, so I tried this Shot using a 300mm telephoto to get the compressed look, I'm quite pleased with the composition
  2. I few years ago now I hit a small deer (probably a Muntjac) at about 50mph in my Porsche, it shattered the (very solid) plastic front bumper, losing all the lights contained therein, dented the nose, crumpled the offside wing and deposited deer poop down the side of the car as the poor thing met its maker. I had my daughter in the car, roof off and just pootling along an old roman road and it was the middle of the afternoon and the stupid thing just stepped out of the bushes at the side of the road there was something coming the other way so I couldn't swerve and although a braked, I still hit it going at (I would guess) 40ish. The car was written off by the insurers but i retained it and bought second hand parts to restore it (a wing alone from Porsche would have cost over £800!). I still have the car but I imagine the deer ended up in the back of the following van (I didn't stop to find out)
  3. Ha! Thank you for that, my brane couldn't work out why there appeared to be a hole in the red pillar! Great shot Thomas!
  4. I do know that my father worked for Freightliner in the 70s and 80s and he often used to work up at Warcup loading and unloading AFVs from the CVRT family (Scorpions/Scimitars/etc) into standard containers, into which they were a very tight fit! I seem to recall that he said that the containers were loaded over the bogies of the 60ft vehicles with no container in the central spot? Not much of a military train in terms of spectacle I suppose...
  5. My word! I've just stumbled upon this thread and I'm in awe of what you have created (and I've only got to page 8!) I have to go out now, but I have marked this page so that I can spend a few happy hours catching up! Thanks for taking the time to post all of this.
  6. I have taken ŧhe liberty of loading some photographs of my model Middleton In Teesdale buildings into a gallery. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/album/1973-teesdale-buildings/ As you can see it still had a long way to go! I decided to reduce the size of the building by omitting the later extension from Middleton. The station masters' house so beautifully depicted above was "off stage" but the Goods Shed was virtually complete. This building was practically complete. Painting was going to be done at the same time as the Station Building and signal box (never started) to ensure that they looked "of a piece". There are more details and pictures in the Gallery so as not to highjack the original thread.
  7. Lovely shots. Middleton is one of my favourite stations. I started an EM gauge model some years ago and I have a complete goods shed and a semi-built station building and a couple of base boards in the garage in need of a home! I might pop a photo of the buildings onto this thread, though it might upset me so think about how long they have been gathering dust! I know I made some alterations from the prototype leaving off the two story extension that was applied to the station building and constructing the goods shed in Wills stone which is not right (can't remember as I sit here if the prototype was brick or coursed stone?) Thanks for the photos and always nice to see a G5. I have a Nucast G5 somewhere. It never ran well with it's cast chassis and X04 hanging way out back but it looks ok if you squint... a lot! I wonder how the new build is progressing, there doesn't appear to be much news to be found on the G5 project website. I digress though. Wonderful pictures, thanks again.
  8. I too really like that shot and I know what you mean about the composition but I am trying to imagine the conversation... Photographer: Excuse me mate, your train's too long! Driver: Sorry? P: Your train, it's too long, it doesn't look right. Could you just drop a couple of coaches off so I can take my shot? D: @$#%&!!!!
  9. thanks to everyone for the postings on here. I've just spent/wasted a good hour catching up on some lovely imagery so here is a contribution of my own taken at the Tanfield Railways "Legends of Industry" Gala weekend and a view through the shed windows
  10. I've just recently erected a Bird feeding artefact (recent offer from Aldi) and attention from the local avian populace has been sparse. I'm hoping that things pick up as the cold weather kicks in. I've got peanuts, various seeds, fatballs and those segmented wormy things (also a water thingy) and as my dog positively discourages the resident feline population from anything other than the most fleeting visit (squirrels are similarly "escorted" from the premises) I think we have a reasonably attractive facility for our feathered chums. I'm a little worried about location but I have positioned it well away from trees and bushes as I think birds prefer not to have areas of concealment where cats can stalk? Or do they prefer to be able to flit from a convenient branch?
  11. I am in awe - at the bottle it must have taken to turn a power-washer onto that! Cojones of titanium!
  12. The most shocking thing about those photographs is that is so unnecessary. Would putting himself and the camera the right side of the fence made any noticeable difference to his shot? No. Sadly it is far from uncommon. I rarely photograph the modern railway but when steam specials are about brains, common sense and courtesy are apparently left at home. So you get fools on railway property and the ignorant wandering in front of your carefully composed shot. Not my idea of a creative relaxing hobby. I hope this particular fool gets a visit from the BTP toot sweet as they say en France.
  13. The greatest sport in the world without doubt (though I do appreciate football too). The best thing about it is TMS. Today was (if I'm honest) a poor day's cricket with India just trying to put off the declaration as long as possible with a ring of fielders on the boundary. HOWEVER listening to TMS is never dull, whether it's Jiffry Boycott extolling the batting expertise of his dear old Mum, Blowers commentating on Buses in the Edgeware Road, Malcolm pulling fascinating stats out of the ether or Michael Vaughan telling us the goings on with a beach ball it is simply great listening. A perfect day for me would involve sun, peace and quiet, a decent book and TMS on the radio. I'd rather not bother watching on the TV mostly, Sky have ruined it with constant adverts and ridiculous repetitive over-analysis, I feel like I'm watching a frog being dissected.
  14. May be not an "improved" version, but a real different take on a classic, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs version of "Strawberry Fields Forever" done in a ska/reggae/latin style? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92eueoQdBXg And I believe I'm right in saying that is the (still) delicious Ms Debbie Harry in the video?
  15. Not "wishful" as much as flawed. If you cultivate oil producing grasses, rape, palms or whatever you basically grow food and burn it. OK for the rich countries at least in the short term. Rank bad news for the poorer countries because there is not enough food grown in the world to feed everyone now. Add to that the violation of pristine environments in order to grow "biofuel" take the example of the Palm Oil plantations in Malaysian Borneo. These plantations were, until recently, virgin rainforest... Every which way you lose Clyde
  16. You can't beat a good old "wig out" so I'm currently grooving to The Outlaws - Green Grass and High Tides (it's their "Freebird") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R82OM5tzcrk But can I also recommend a slightly more modern take on the 10min jam... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cYq3zHddIg and because of the limitations of You Tube, you will need Part 2... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU3YDd9G9qo&feature=related
  17. Oh my! I've just caught up with this thread and you've only gone and trumped everything you've posted so far. Those hoppers are magnificent, just a beautiful model and the work in NINE of them blows my mind. Sir, I salute you!
  18. Some wonderful photographs and that 13ton wooden hopper is exquisite. Thanks for taking the time to photograph this wonderful layout and to post them up on here.
  19. Leaf springs from 80135 bogie in close up Confession: I've cheated a grad tint onto the sky as it was blown out on the original.
  20. These are from one of my galleries: If Dali met Gresley The reflection of the steam pressure gauge in 4468 Mallard is distorted in the highly polished paintwork of the cab roof. Reflections on a Record Holder The glass front of Locomotion Museum, Shildon is reflected in the highly polished paintwork of 4468 Mallard. Image has been converted to Monochrome in Corel Paintshop Pro and the contrast slightly tweaked. Mallard: Name Plate This image picks up it's contrasting orange reflection from the scrolling LED displays in the museum. And here is a link to the rest of the gallery containing less "arty" detail shots of 4468. Mallard at Locomotion, Shildon
  21. There is a Hobbymat on Ebay at the moment hidden away in the "Business and Office equipment section" so you might get a bargain? Hobbymat with Milliing doofer Worth a silly bid? Disclaimer - Nowt to do with me, just spotted it and tryin' to be neighbourly!
  22. I know D&S ceased trading some time ago. From memory following the decision of Dan Pinnock to "Semi-retire"? I noticed the other day that D&S un-made kits are commanding a pretty decent premium on EBay. So the question is... Why has no-one picked up the masters? Does Dan still hold them? I think a number of the cast whitemetal wagon kits ended up as 51L products, the stuff I'm thinking of was the etched coaches (particularly the NER ones) and etched signal box windows. All great products and judging by the prices on EBay there is a dormant demand for them.Â
  23. The Tubes - The Completion Backwards Principle Barclay James Harvest - Live Tapes Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More The last is rather good but I do find the fact that Indie fans have just discovered folk music rather amusing. Recommended nonetheless.
  24. For some bizzarre reason the editor will not allow me to delete (80gsm or below) which shoul of course refer to the weight of paper not the mucky varnish!
  25. A thought for your lettering. Use a computer drawing package to print onto thin paper and cut to fit the paneling with handpainted finishing? A thin wash of "mucky varnish" (matt varnish with a few drops of brown or black ink added) should bring it all together.(80gsm or below)
