  1. For a moment I thought you meant this cheerful churchman.
  2. This question of partitions sort of rang a bell, and a quick glance at the GWR wagon bible revealed that, because livestock owners were not averse to moving the partition to gain more space than they had paid for, two GWR employees devised and patented a locking mechanism, which appears to be this: Improvements in, or relating to Cattle Trucks
  3. On the subject of number plates, my favourite, which was well before the era of vanity plates was ODD 1. It was on a quite a commonplace car, and was, I believe, a Gloucestershire registration.
  4. On another johnny machine: 'This is the worst chewing gum I've ever tasted.'
  5. I have a dim recollection of its being described as the work of the ‘Master of Paddington’.
  6. I hate to do this, but my inner pedant, and long years of Modern Languages at school and university force me to it: à la recherche de la tomate perdue. Are you sure that 'cult' is the correct spelling?
  7. Crematoria are usually named after the nearest local town, except for the Forest of Dean Crematorium, where the towns are Coleford and Cindeford.
  8. The Warwickshire Railways site also has the photograph of the Singer car train and motorcycles being loaded, together with details of the formation of a couple of circus trains.
  9. I just happened to glance at the report of the 1890 Norton Fitzwarren accident, where it states How could that have been done?
  10. There are some strange things on Facebook, but thank you. It's not a narrowly focused group; a recent topic was the use of top hats by rabbis.
  11. Splendid. May I share this please on the 'Clerical Dress' Facebook group?
  12. Toplight brake in chocolate and cream in 1953 at Bristol TM (from The Titfield Thunderbolt).
  13. A friend of mine persuaded a Richard Brain not to apply for a job at a boys' school.
  14. May I use your dictaphone? - No. Use your finger like everyone else.
  15. 1501 was throwing some spectacular sparks on the last train to Bridgnorth yesterday.
  16. You was robbed. I think mine was only a tenner. Best £10 I've ever spent.
  17. A neighbour, who was a Senior Traction Inspector for DB Cargo, was one of the people responsible for examining DBC drivers who wanted to work on steam traction. He had to retire in 2018 (aged 80). I believe they trained on the SVR.
  18. 4270 is nearing the end of her boiler ticket, I believe.
  19. There is an article in GWRJ issue 12, Kitchen Service, describing the work of the restaurant car service, which is well worth a read. Food was prepared and cooked on board; the restaurant car would have a pantry for prep and a kitchen. A normal composition would be cook, cook's assistant and kitchen boy.
